Re: PaleoZone vs Morbid Obesity: An Odyssey
How about monthly updates?
I think we're all worried that after more than two years of intense focus and self-discipline, that you might be in a little slide. Maintenance can be harder than losing...

Re: PaleoZone vs Morbid Obesity: An Odyssey
You've got way more willpower and discipline than I do!
One more bit of advice for you upcoming diet break. Try to find something that does not involve counting calories. I know it easily becomes...

Re: PaleoZone vs Morbid Obesity: An Odyssey
I think that's a good plan. I lost about 50 pounds that I gained after getting married and having kids, and I got back into playing squash while I was at dieting. I really hated playing two days in a...

Re: PaleoZone vs Morbid Obesity: An Odyssey
My guess is that you've been measuring your waist incorrectly, perhaps at the wrong spot. This also explains the change in LBM since you use your body measurements in your average.

He lifts more because of: (1) Leverages (tendon insertion points, limb lengths etc...), (2) CNS training, and (3) skill work, which is a subset of CNS training. Except in dynamic lifts like...

Re: The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
Hi Matt, I discussed this in the original post - you need weights of 60% 1RM or more to generate a significant training effect, and the weights in metcons are generally below that. Moreover, cardio...

Re: The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
Hi Mark,
I think we're pretty close on these points - I too agree that you should develop your strength across all rep ranges and develop all your energy systems. But most metcons are in the range...

Re: The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
Hi Donald - we're actually on the same page here! If you browse some of my other recent posts, you'll see that I'm a big advocate for steady state cardio over HIIT. But I think we need to...

Re: The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
Hi Katherine,
I agree with your points, and it is why I put 'all things being equal' when I proposed the metcon challenge between Hatfield and Platz. (in this case, cardio is the relevant factor)....

Re: The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
No, that's not really the point I'm making. Erik's Socratic dialogue is doing a much better job. I'm not sure where he's going, but at least he's following the discussion.
Edit: whups, meant to...

Re: The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
I don't think that is a good objection.
(1) Weightlifers are, in point of fact, extremely muscular people who have put on lots of muscle.
(2) Weightlifters have not maximized their upper body...

Thanks for the substantive and insightful response. I think we disagree but it should be an interesting discussion. And maybe we aren't so far apart after all!
Strength is ultimately a...

The Mistaken Emphasis on 1RM Strength
Here (http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/why_bodybuilders_are_more_jacked_than_powerlifters) is an interesting story about a bodybuilder and a powerlifter competing to see who...

Re: Just starting, could use some guidance.
A pretty orthodox recommendation, at least for these boards, would be to go to two classes a week at your local affiliate, and then lift weights twice a week following a program like Starting...

Congratulations on the progress!
I got into Crossfit briefly last summer and read your log back then. It makes me happy to see that a year later you're still at it and have reached the 150 pounds...

Question Two: Is strength the most important of the physical domains for fitness?

Re: Was it difficult starting out?
I'm a newbie too and it's all about the scaling. It's amazing how much easier a WOD gets just from stripping a pair of ten pound plates from the bar.
1. Barbells. Does your local box have the short...

Re: Middle Aged Dude's Quasi Hybrid Crossfit Log!
I took my 10RM's today because I've been furiously reading the "you can't gain strength from WODs only" threads. I'm not sure where I stand on this, so I thought I'd use myself as a guinea pig. I'll...

Re: Is Crossfit better for women?
I don't think you are making much of an effort to grapple with my argument.
1. The typical Crossfit programming is basically all metcons with perhaps a little strength work in the beginning. So if...

Re: Is Crossfit better for women?
Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate the time.
I think the most interesting response is that workouts like Fran are metcons; they are not designed to increase strength. It depends. Beginners...
