DIY Wrist straps
I'm sure that I'm not the only one who feels like their wrists will sometimes explode under the loads of a heavy OHS or Split least I hope I'm not :D One option is tape, which is either too tight or not tight enough. Another is expensive elastic wrist wraps which don't really work unless your hand is red from the lack of circulation. So I made these wraps.

Weightlifting guru Glenn Pendlay recommended to me that I try cutting denim or heavy cloth and making some wraps. Since that involves sewing and sounds like a lot of work I went with this much easier option. Boxing hand wraps are pretty tough so I cut a pair and these simple wraps out of them.

All links are work safe.

- 1 pair boxing hand wraps (cloth only, no elastic)
- 1 pair scissors
- 1 lighter

First cut the wraps in half. You can play with the length if you want more or less wrap. If you cut them right in the middle than you can get away with two pair of wraps.

Then carefully burn the cut end of the wrap. I found this help with fraying, especially after washing.

Since you cut the thumb loop off just pinch the cut end of the wrap between your thumb and index finger for a starting point. Then wrap the wrist. Before finishing the wrap place your starting point on the wrap then finish with the Velcro side to secure all loose pieces.

If you are sewing savvy or have an amazing wife that does like I do :pepper: then you can take the other half of the wrap and make a second pair. Simple sew a thread onto the cut end and use that instead of the Velcro.

Hope this helps some of you looking for an easy solution to help with the heavy lifting. Now get to it!

I've been using the same method lately with the exception that I
just leave the thumb loop on and wrap the wrist with the whole
wrap, the excess goes farther up my forearm and
then both wrist wraps end with the velcro. This method works OK.
I have also been thinking about finding an alteration shop to splice me a shorter
wrap...but now I see I will probably get away without any thumb loop at

Josh - it's easier to hold the wrap on your wrist with your thumb and wrap around it. We've been using those for over year & half now at our gym and that's my favorite type of wraps. In summer we have them all over the place - at least 25 people have them.

The only difference that we made is that we taped the end of the wrap to prevent fraying with athletic tape. One 1" piece that folds over the end & then about 4 inches of tape to wrap around it. Stays on nicely, you can wash it etc. My pair is still alive from way back when.

You think powerlifters haven't thought of this lol and they aren't fancy schmancy or require you to cut circulation.

I like the DIY projects, but I picked up something like this at Wal-Mart for $5. Worth it.

What lifts do you guys use wrist straps for? When i was at a regular gym I bought some Inzer wrist wraps for bench press because my wrists get overworked a lot due to using them 30 hours a week at work. Thinking about busting them out again because I've been experiencing some wrist pains after some crossfit wods.

OHS, Thrusters, Front Squats, Push Press/Push Jerk & we also use them when it's hot to prevent sweating on the palms when doing wod's with pull-ups (like Helen - where in 100 degree heat you don't want to waste your time on rechalking or ripping - so the wraps prevent the sweat from coming on the palms during the runs & swings etc).
