Often when one has a severe muscle strain, you can start squatting and other slow movements relatively quickly. However, things like sprinting and agility work can be death for strained quads and hamstrings.

If you can do basic movements, what is the best way to rehab back into faster and more athletic movements?

No magic I know of. Go slow, test things out. Age, nutritional status, sleep are all factors. Err on the conservative side and one will be back at 100% faster.
