New to crossfit... Cost?

Hi folks,

I'm new to crossfit and I'm really excited to get started at a gym/box/affiliate (I'm still trying to learn the lingo!) so I can learn the exercises and proper form and just get used to crossfit in general. My question is: how much do you pay for a month of crossfit sessions? The place I found local to me (Tyler, Texas) wants $350 per month to do crossfit. Is this about average? I can't really afford that on my new graduate salary! If that's about the normal cost, how much would it cost to pick up some of the essential equipment to do crossfit at home?

Thanks for the help!

Three hundred and fifty dollars? That's outrageous. Usually.. Affiliate prices range from 75-150 dollars a month. Are there any other affiliates in your area?

One year = $4,200

Rogue Fitness Crossfit package = 1,035.00

I think you're better off buying your own equipment and paying a CF trainer in your area to teach you the fundamental movements. Especially on a 'new graduate' salary.

Thanks I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was preposterous. I could swing 75 to 150 a month. I dont think there is another one in my area. Not one that i could find online anyways. What is the rogue crossfit package you mentioned?

That is triple what I pay. For that amount, I'd definitely outfit a home gym.

She lies.

For that amount, she'd buy more shoes.

yeah. my affiliate is 100 month to month.
less if u sign up for consecutive months.
try to find a different affiliate. I did crossfit for 2 1/2 years before i found my affiliate. The very first workout i did at the affiliate changed my workouts forever. there is nothing like working out in the group setting of an affiliate.

True. I already have the home gym also. And, I've been wanting some Vibrams :D.

If you're going to buy equipment, I've used:

Again Faster - bar, bumper plates, squat stands, C2 rower, kettlebells, jump ropes, and Pendlay Do-Wins
Rogue - rings, 20" box (you can make this yourself)
Muscledriver - sandbag, AbMat

My parallettes were made by a fellow CFer. My outdoor setup with an 8' pullup bar, 10' bar for rings and platform was built by a fellow CFer.

Wright also has fantastic packages. I wanted Hi Temp bumpers, though.

I mean, it would be hard to drag me away from my affiliate, since I practically live there. It's only worth what someone is willing to pay, but $350 a month is insane. Outfit the home gym and use the money you saved to get private coaching or hit some seminars when you need it.

Re: New to crossfit... Cost?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm glad to hear some of this stuff can go on outdoors, since my garage is full of tools for my other hobby: four wheeling.

I have been scouring the net and the crossfit boards to find another, more reasonable crossfit affiliate, but it seems the next nearest one is over an hour away. How disappointing to have only one affiliate in a town of 100,000. Where there is a will, though, there is a way.

Does anyone have some advice on where to start while I gather some funds to start accumulating my own workout equipment?

Kyle, what do you get for $350? This is the most important question. If it's just what you would get at any other affiliate, then this price is outrageous. If you are getting one-on-one personal training 5 days/week, then this is a great price!

I know at my affiliate, there are 10 personal training sessions required before you can join the group classes. This is @ $50/session. Maybe this is the price you were quoted from your nearby affiliate?
