Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I too won't be missing Bridges. He is just too small to ever win it and it always shows once they get to workouts that require moving serious weight.

If you didn't watch California's last heat of men's event 7, go back and watch it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb5P54jerg8&t=31m20s (wfs) Dan Bailey was swinging like crazy for nearly all the muscle ups. The whole row of men came off the rings at the same time. All 10 finished with 14 seconds of each other. That was a crazy race! |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Re: Bridges. I prefer many over him. I was specifically watching how Bridges would react to his Invictus partner Andersen's struggling to complete the HSPU in event 6. Bridges was done and I wondered if Bridges would get in Andersen's face to get him moving. He didn't. He sat on a block and was talking with Bailey. Towards the end Bridges got up and got the crowd into it but that was about it. Andersen was pretty much HSPUing himself out of a games spot at that point. I don't know why I care. I guess I figured the Sea of Green was a tight group. On a similar but unrelated note, Lauren Fisher was gracious, smiling and waving throughout.

I don't care what anyone, any gym owner, any box mentality, community person says. At the highest levels of competition, with a significantly increasing amount of prize money on the line and the global attention and sponsorship's that come with being one of the best and the ability to offset the sacrifice and commitment of being a top level athlete and chance to almost set up your family, your own business (box), well.. this tight group thing. It will take a back seat. |

Do you personally know how Andersen likes to be motivated in a workout? My guess is that you don't. There are plenty of athletes I know who actually dislike when people, especially people they know, get in their face trying to "motivate" them in a hard workout. It might be only 10% of the athletes that feel that way, but it's entirely possible Andersen is one of them and Bridges is respecting that. Just another point of view. |

My favorite games level Crossfit dude of all time - Mikko Salo on Crossfits 13.5 video.
cameraman - "so you guys won't cheer?" Mikko - "I don't need cheering." cameraman - "what, no cheer?" Mikko - "nah. Its for ladies." a few laughs and grins and then "if you can't do a workout without cheering..so, whats the point?" his thoughts on falling over on your back, rolling around on the ground (which I now for SOME people call the Crossfit Flop - because its a bit over the top) and his thoughts on music as a necessity to bring it are just top notch. The guy's the best. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Yes cheering on a muscle fatigue or a goat could go either way. R Anderson was struggling from the very start.. sadly.. was hoping that he went to the games this year.. he is a super cool down to earth guy who looks very natural. Cheering would have come from the coach in practice programming strict deficit hspu's..
On the other hand I thought that the regionals were the best yet. Fun and exciting good for the spectators... Yes we do miss out on the home town box heros but its good to see the top 40 go at it. |

Just another point of view.
I have a few athletes that seek me out when I judge the comps or open because of how stuff goes down. Many of them "dislike" the crowd noise. One guy hates how his wife gets right up on the line and yells at him to do more. 2 minute, 1 minute. Don't be a pansy, suck it up, etc. When your body is oxygen short and your brain isn't focused and you are trying to do what only you can do, the last thing they want is outside interference. I stay in line of sight, keep the reps right in front of them with both fingers and being loud (each person prefers something different). If before hand they tell me they want a 1 min and 30 second call I will otherwise I try to shield them from the confusion and just keep them doing what they have planned. Of course I have had guys who thrive off the noise. When the crowd cheers then they pick it up and lift/perform better. Everyone is different. Knowing what they like/prefer is hard unless you know them well enough. I think the biggest issue we see is when judging, a judge becomes like a spectator and cheers them on too much and falls off on the judging... Seen too many judges miss reps or count garbage because they are "cheering" vs judging. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I agree that Event 7 is by far the most exciting to watch. And ultimately 2-3 seconds can make or break a years worth of training for a lot of people. The way the shuffled the scoring this year that last event is worth 1/7th of your score where the difference between going and not going is so slight. I think that event and the HS walk should have had a little less weighting.
As for the cheering on, I train by myself, I hate having people yell at me except for a few people who actually know what I am doing. Yelling at someone during strict deficit HSPUs is not going to help them at all. Mikko was and always will be the man for his approach. Guy is just beast mode. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I hate judging.. I find myself cheering and wondering how many reps they did... lucky I don't do it much.. I hate giving no reps.. but I have been no repped plenty of times in competition so some people love giving no reps. Yes you see inconstancy in one judge or the other.. one athlete or the next. We all hate to get no repped but I am sure that we deserved most all of them and a few more.
I do have mucho respect for judges who do this on their own free time and to the promotors who put on the events. Such a big cog with some many moving parts. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Bridges: While I do admire his work ethic, it's really hard for me to get behind the guy. He is simply too small. I'm 6'2, 260lbs, and he is one large whole pizza away from being half of me. I do wish him the best in the future at the Games should he make it again.
Mikko: Guy was a machine in every sense of the word. I love his thoughts on no music/cheering, etc. Really miss him and his attitude. Fisher: She's young, she'll be back. Yes she is a fan favorite also, and I wish she could have made it but I like the fact that she was waving to the fans, etc. SDHP: An ancient cf move that goes WAY back. As for what they are here, as opposed to they are to the rest of the world, if a snatch can be pressed out, and still count, then I get it. It's CF making up a standard for it in their own world. No problem here. I actually like it in the CF world. |

In some weird way I actually like no reps. Not when I get them of course, but when I see an elite athlete get one, you get to see their real side. Whether it is the Dan Bailey smile and head shake, the Froning death stare, or the Khalipa mouth open gaze. Seeing some major athletes yelling at a judge mid-WOD because of a no-rep shows they lack that mental edge. So, in a round about way, they are kind of nice to see. What I hate to see is when an athlete gets a dozen no reps because they're too exhausted or they don't understand the requirements, that's a little disheartening. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I like that CF made the standard for snatch and clean that a knee touching the floor would be a no rep.

Did you mean to say that when you see an athlete who doesn't meet movement standards you won't count it? There absolutely is a difference. One of the most difficult things about judging is distinguishing between bad form and failure to meet movement standards. I allow reps all the time that have bad form because they met the standards. It's no fun to do this, but it's the job of the judge. Oddly enough, some of the people who suck the most at distinguishing this when judging are coaches. |

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I came very close to bouncing an athlete from a competition last year because she cussed me out for no repping her. Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Question about Masters, Teens and Teams.. mention a bit ago about them being in the Soccer stadium? Wonder if anyone heard anything else about that. They are charging $25.00 per day per person to watch. Certainly hope that Vendor Village is open so they can justify the charge. The track was a venue was good in that the stands held several thousand people. The soccer stadium holds so many would get lost. Knowing Crossfit I am sure that they have a plan maybe corner off some stands and make the platform, rig.. opens up so many new ideas. Castro was saying that the space of the track limited what he could do.

Excellent point. The Judges Course, in fact, is quite clear that a judge is not there to comment on an athlete's form/mechanics. They are only there to ensure that they meet the points of performance required to meet the standard, no more, no less. Re: your other post, about Froning's squats. I can't say I've noticed, per se, but it reminds me of something, that I've thought that judging people with shorter legs and big quads can be difficult, particularly if they have a neutral-to-narrow stance. A guy at my box fits that build and I avoid judging him if possible; it can very hard to see exactly where their hip crease is sometimes. |

Totally correct. I am speaking more from a powerlifting background, the form vs standards are kind of the same thing in that realm...I mean other than say rounded back deadlifting, and some stuff like that... I've no repped for not waiting for commands (in PL you have to wait for commands to start, rack, etc) no repped for butt coming off bench, not touching chest, not hitting parallel, dropping bar, etc... |

I often recommend that athletes wear pants/shorts with an obvious stripe or design down the side as it also helps. Any time a guy with big quads rocks tights with a stripe in competition I say a little prayer of thanks. We have multiple athletes on our team that are absolute quadzillas. Two of them are so big that sometimes it's hard to tell that they are fully extended at the top. I learned the last year or so that sometimes looked at the Glutes is the best way to determine the hip extension. |

Yes Rich will go to the games with the team but I believe that Nor Cal will take it. Wild Card is Invictus if they get Fisher and Rasmish on the team..

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I think team event 2 was very poorly designed unless I'm missing something. Basically, once the men get through the snatches, the rest of the event is practically meaningless for them unless their women somehow caught up.
After the women get started, it doesn't matter if the men are the first team done or the last from my understanding, all that matters is where the women finish. I think this event should have either been: A: split so that half the points are based on the men, and half on the women B: structured so that the women don't start until the men are completely finished. (probably not plausible from an event time perspective) C: set up to allow either the men or women to go first. Adds a strategy element that I think should play a role. If you happen to have much stronger men than women (Crossfit Mayhem), you'd start the women first so your men's team has a chance to make up ground over the whole event- not just matter during the snatches and be virtually irrelevant after. |
