I'm convinced we're going to see handstand walks this year. Similar to how they did the overhead lunges last year. They kind of setup the model in terms of how to structure it with that less technical movement. HS walks have been a huge part of Regionals and the Games the last few years, I could see them being in the Open now. Not sure what the scaled option for that would be though.
I could see this. The Granite Games had them for intermediate athletes in the teams of 3, so did Wodapolooza. Also I sense that 17.1 and 17.2 will be done week 1. Two wods the first week.

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread

2014 Masters Games did hs walk for max distance. They had the older masters do walking overhead lunges with a d ball for scale. Kinda of weird to see 40+ guys not being able to do it.. OPT got no score and 2016 champ Ron M 45+ got 12' but strangely they gave him 120'.
This seems a bit of a lop-sided match?
I think some of the big time athletes are being more selective on what they do outside of their normal course of training, whether it's open announcements or the demise of the East Coast Comp. So Crossfit gets to/has to expand the pool of folks from which to draw their open announcement competitors. I wonder if these start becoming (or have already become) paid appearances for the athletes.

This might be the end of the elite at the announcements. I hope Ro & Boz take it over. Bring normal people closer to them and the results.

Sorry to say its no fun watching a mismatch or people that we have never heard of.

I don't think we have seen the last of the dumbells yet. I think they are going to turn up once again.

Why..... i don't think Dave Castro would tell everyone to get 22kg and 15kg dumbells just to use them for 20min

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread

Question about movement standards, specifically for Scaled. For box step overs...do both feet have to touch on top? Seems like no, if they're technically allowed to jump completely over, but step ups in the judges course said both feet touch, but this is a step over not a step up...so I'm just going around in circles.

Hate the ambiguity of this sometimes. Don't want to make my athletes do anything that isn't required, but also don't want to give them an unfair advantage if I'm wrong. Has anyone seen an official response from CFHQ on this one?

This is the standard
There is no requirement to stand tall while on top of the box. A two-foot takeo is always required, and only the athlete’s feet may touch the box. The athlete may jump on top of the box using a two-foot landing and then jump or step o to the other side, or the athlete may jump completely over the box. If jumping over the box, the feet must go over the box, not around it, and the athlete must use a two-foot landing.
Not sure. Vellner finished at 11:52 but his submitted time is 12:57.
Vellner was assessed a major penalty after video review due to touching his body with his empty hand multiple times on the snatches.

Just watched some of it and he definitely did in the round of 20. Used his left arm on his knee/thigh as he picked up the dumbbell. May have done it more but quit watching.

Is there language in the current ruleboook that allows for major or minor penalties to be applied on non video submissions at this stage of the open?
So, I do have a question... I judged someone but I did so at another affiliate. How are their scores validated?
Whoever the box owner is at that affiliate should be the one the validates the score, but it wouldn't hurt to give that owner a heads up that you judged athlete so and so. That athlete will still need to submit their score online and have their affiliate owner do the validation like normal. Hope that helps!

I don't know, but it may be that they've decided to treat the open announcement like a video submission. It actually is a pretty smart idea to do that. If I was the affiliate owner, I wouldn't have validated the score had I seen the no reps anyway.

Guess that they had too many technical difficulties and are extending the registration by one day. How many peeps are going to re do this knowing they have one more day. I try to get out and they keep pulling me in right?

It would have been good to know because i would have given it a third try this morning, so for some people this will be an advantage.

Now the thing is that CFHQ has had a year to get this in place... so why the hell didn't they have this tested months ago before they released it.

If you have experienced coders that really know how to handle the data repository and ensure basic functionality, which is the most important, should actually working when the time comes for The Open this would never had happened. They never pressure tested it under load. I mean you have your web browsers/ipads/tablets and mobile devices that all require different interfaces and put different loads on application.... I have no idea, but they should have redundancy built into the solution with specific alarms that warn for this type of thing and then have a backup plan. Now due to the fact that the new face lifted version is not working they could have rolled back to the old version of entering scores and validation while the techs are working to fix the new version in the backend.

This does not look good for Crossfit at all, this is a big letdown. They had no back up, no plan if the **** should hit the fan and did not notify the athletes of the change. For us that were sleeping when this was announced missed the chance of a repeat.

Castro and company must be fuming.....

added:
Just checked the leaderboard and i can find myself in Europe for 45-49 but i am not in the worldwide leaderboard.... you can't even search for an Athlete... they have big problems and someone is going to get fired....

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread

They were supposed to have a new app this year.

They don't even have all the functionality on the new site that the old site did, I can't look up my old Open scores by clicking on my profile, for example.

The site has been a mess since the announcement, going down on and off all weekend.

They told people originally to just email their scores to support@crossfitgames.com before extending the deadline. I assume they got thousands of emails and freaked.

Their communication has been poor the entire time. Posting on Twitter, FB, etc. They have all our emails, you think they'd send out communications.

They made $6,500,000 off the Open in 2016 and had all year to get the new app and a functioning/stress tested site up, this is a huge fail.

On top of all that, they are trolling people hard on social media who are complaining about the issues. Don't get me wrong, it's funny. But in this instance, they should probably be a little more apologetic and kind.

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread

I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch about this. I'm guessing no one on this board has created a website that will eventually have over 1.5 million unique data points all entered by different users. There's bound to be some issues. It's a bit more cumbersome than previous versions but that is the same complaint you always here when any site changes their layout.

As far as having the extension favouring some athletes, everyone thought they had 4 days to do the workout and now everyone has 5 days. How you decide to schedule your workouts is up to you. I'm guessing that no one shooting for the Games is overly concerned. Those who have an issue with this dropping them from 84583rd place to 84592nd place don't get the spirit of the open.

I had an issue submitting my score, sent them an email and got a response. With the storm going on right now I thought that was pretty good communication.

I have. It's not hard if you just do a little grade-school math before you start...which I doubt they did. The math I'm talking about it: figure how much data you need to handle at what rate, then double or triple that as a safety margin and design accordingly. Then make sure you test it to insure your assumptions pan out, before you make it public. Like I said, it's not hard and they apparently didn't do it.

David, while I agree that there were a lot of failures with the new website, your explanation shows that you have almost no understanding of what is involved in building significant web applications. It's not just simple arithmetic at all.

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread

Just some basic data to close the subject on the CF application and problems...

Here is my current thinking: off the top of my head
•Get a 1 or 2 gigabit internet connection.
•2x HA Proxies / load balancers.
•12x physical servers (2x quad cores, 32GB of ram) to run 25 Virtual Machine Apache web servers - 300 VMs total.
•2x memcached Servers (2x quad cores, 32GB of ram)
•2x Master Mysql DB servers, 3x read only slave mysql BD servers
•2x 6TB SAN RAIDs
•All 10GbE or fiber connected...

Figure out the hardware, and how to deploy and maintain it.

As for maintaining this beast, Slack, Rightscale, Landscape, VMware. deploy it on Amazon EC2 as it is much cheaper in the long run, rack it and add EC2 instances if more is needed.

Let me mention some of these general guidelines on scalability:
1.No single point of failure:
2.Have modular SOA architecure.
3.Have a framework to measure performance of your website to gauge improvements.
4.Load balancing
5.Caching - at browser, at CDN, local to a application server, global to application severs, distributed across servers.
6.No-sql DB
7.Optimizing relation DB - indexing, sharding, partioning.
8.reverse-proxy
9.Asynch queuing - Kafka, SNS.

So now back to the Open...

Question----

Did you think 17.2 was harder than 17.1?

I thought 17.1 was hard as being over 200lbs and doing burpees is not ideal..

Aaron MacDougall 03-06-2017 06:44 AM

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread

I'm 6' and 200ish lbs at the moment and I found 17.1 very hard. Especially since I am coming off an injury and only got back to training a week before the open. The burpees really killed me. I think I could have gone 3 minutes or so faster if I was actually ready for the open.

17.2 wasn't nearly as bad cardio wise but my arms just fatigued too fast. I'm sure I could have pulled another 20-30 reps out of it if I had been able to prep for the open.

I'm 215 and 6ft. What kills me are the T2B, they take too long to complete so I loose allot of time. My grip was fine the whole time during 17.2. I reckon I could get 100+ reps easily if I could speed them up. I hit 92 reps today.

17.1 was hard on the lungs.... I'm hoping for some max 1rm or something so we have a chance against all these Duracell bunnies :D
