Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I didn't follow the teams at all this weekend, I guess I will at least have to watch the last events.
As for the Fraser/Smith thing, I got to say, I'm really glad Ben won. Mat is a great athlete, but he had some huge holes. Ben seems to be a great guy and has been consistently good for years... Before the regionals and games I was really excited for the womens competition, thinking that this year finally all of the big names would be there all at ones, except Talayna maybe. Annie, Sam, Julie, Stacie, Camille, Michele, Kara,... See what I mean? Not one on the podium! I would have loved to see Sara Sigmundsdottir win, seems to be a really nice girl, very positive and did a great job for the most part. Seemed like in the end she lost it a bit... Kara Webb was my pick for first, I think she might have lost a lot on Friday after Murph, didn't look very healthy! I liked the events this year, the conditions seemed to be horrible though. Loved to watch Murph, didn't understand Midline March and the paddle board, the finals could have been turned around, the peg board as last movement maybe. Would have made it easier to watch I guess... I love the peg board by the way. Would love to see a side to side relay race for the teams sometime. |
on a different note -- the icelanders are the targaryens of crossfit with the flowing white/blond hair and potential to dominate the crossfit world for some time. winter is coming and they are ready!
If that's the case, let me be Khal Drogo for a couple of hours. :) They are the Fire of the Targaryens and the Ice of the Starks all in one. George RR Martin take note! |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
So a healthy Ben Smith wins the games.. Mat F close but no cigar. I am glad that Ben won.. On Sunday checking in I confused the two Iceland ladies and told Katrin thinking that she was Sara that its your year…. you are gonna win.. she looked surprised.. she was a very nice lady beast.
Surprised that the hspu took out Mat F. He rowed and airodyned like crazy to almost catch up. Bet that no one could have gone faster than him during that phase. Turned himself inside out.. thus making those 203# kb seem like 1000 lbs.. was a great finish on both sides. Congrats on a bigger and way better year for the games. Sure its getting harder and they will have their share of pull outs.. Even harder next year. I really did not want Rich to win. Hoped that No Cal or another box would win. His men we're by far the best.. the ladies really stepped up their game. End of the day they all do the same events and get to use the same scoring system. We all have some bad calls and things that don't go our way. Shout out to all of the teen, masters, individuals and teams this year for making it. Great showing! |
Did you notice the scoring spread was different this year?
Instead of 100, 95, 90, etc. (five point spread), it was 100, 94, 88, 84, 80, etc. (six point spread for first three finishers, then four point spread for 4-10th place, then two point spread for everyone else). Maybe this explains scoring errors through the weekend?
I re-scored the athletes based on the point spread used in 2014, just to see if it would make a difference in the outcome. With 2014 Games scoring system: - Ben Smith's winning spread over Matt Fraser increases to 61 points instead of 36 points. - Dan Bailey wins 3rd place. - Scott Panchik and Cole Sager move ahead of Spencer Hendel to 5th and 6th place. Spencer Hendel is bumped down from 5th to 7th place. - Scott Panchik beats Cole Sager by 1 point instead of 9 points. I also re-scored the athletes based on the 2014 Regional scoring system (lowest score wins, i.e., 1st = 1 point): - Ben Smith wins by 45 points, which is more significant at lower point totals. - Matt Fraser and Bjorg Guomundsson tie for 2nd place. Scoring systems make a difference in the outcome. Re-scoring things show that Ben Smith's performance was superior to Matt Fraser's performance. |

No matter which way it went, Benny boy won. Guess all my rooting for Nike atheltes didn't pay off that well. I mean, it did, but they didn't take first like I wanted. :) |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Can someone clarify something for me?
During solo 2 during the team competition, Froning's bike wasn't functioning correctly (I'm assuming) so a head judge came over and watched his screen while looking at a stop watch. What was that all about? |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Another question - does anyone know what happened to NorCal on the tire flip relay's first rope climbs? For a while they were just standing there talking with their judge and Bozman.

The way I think it went down was the judges just had her row and get off around when the 1st few people got off. I'm guessing for Rich, they know within a 10 - 15 second window how long it "should" take, assuming you are putting "I want to win the games effort" into it. So they just decided, after 1 minute (or whatever), get off and continue on. No other way to do it. Fair considering the situation. |

Hey Christopher Morris, can you plug in those number for Rich and see how he would've done this year?

Considering they did completely different workouts, I don't think that's possible. |
