Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Interesting. I, myself sometimes like a longer warmup than other people but mainly to get myself loose and lively.
Do you find that it mucks up with your WOD performance? I found this a bit last year as I tended to bike about 6-7 miles slightly uphill to the gym to workout. I did this as well last saturday which was 5+ in a headwind. It looks like I see 30m of LSD before some of your workouts and was just curious.
Actually Blair, it doesn't seem to hurt my WOD performance at all - - probably just the opposite. The couple of times I tried some fast intervals, I got winded, but I did those as my CFE-type WOD and toward the end of my workout session. I've also had some days when I'll do an easy to moderate row for about a half-hour while I'm gearing down for the evening and watching TV. BTW, the longer warm-ups tend to fit in well with what Kelly Starrett said in his video on the CF Journal site. Definitely worth watching, plus he makes some good points about not using NSAIDs any more...... |
Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Hmm, I don't remember the longer WU video with KStar. NSAIDS, yes.

I don't think Kelly produced a video about longer WUs; I just commented on his analysis of some of the causes of tissue injuries, like age (where I fit in), prior injury of the same body component(s), etc...... |

090707 TUESDAY......More CFFB Programming.....
Warm-up: Walking/running: 10:00, .70 miles total distance. Walking warm-up to 4.2 MPH. Intervals - easy runs: 3 X 30 sec @ 6.5 MPH with 30 sec rest (4.2 MPH) between runs, 1 X 30 sec @ 6.0 MPH with 1:00 cool down @ 4.0 MPH. CF Redding WU: Push-ups to 30 reps, sub stability ball full-ROM situps X 20 for GHDs, weighted lunges - 20# Dbs X 10 X 2 (R/L). Strength WOD: Weighted Pull-ups 3, 3, 3, 3, 3. 25# X 3, dropped to 20# X 3, 3, 3, 3* Daily WOD: Power Cleans 185# (for time): 15, 10, 5 Warm-up sets: 45# X 10, 95# X 5, 135# X 1, F, F. Wanted to use 135# but just could not get under it. Used same weight as previously (120#) Working: 120# Time: 4:37 Tried a few dumbbell snatches (Don't think I have the form correct) 20# X 10 X 2 (right, then left). * Not sure, but I don't think I've ever gotten more than two or three sets of weighted pull-ups (weight was 15# for those). Workout today felt good; would have liked to have used 135# for the cleans, but had a couple of near misses even at 120#. More skill work necessary I'm afraid. |

Nice work with the CFFB style, Steven. Please keep on maintaining a good eye on your recovery with these WODs, scaled or not they are quite traumatic.
Your work with weighted PUs will pay off sooner rather than later...I need some more of those myself/ |

Going solo makes it difficult to keep the intensity at 100%, but I aim for it as best I can. My 2 on - 1 off / 3 on - 1 off schedule seems to work well for whatever I am doing. Thanks also on the weighted PUs......I felt nice to get through five sets of them for once without having to dump all of the weight. |

He talked about it in the injury one recently, how people with previous injuries might need to spend more time warming up the injured area. I definitely need to spend extra time on my right shoulder before I do any pressing. |

Erin, Thanks so much for stopping by! It's always great to hear from you and I love looking in (when I get the chance, though lately, that's been the exception to the rule) on what you and the Tribe have going on. Workouts are a bit haphazard right now - - still trying to find a job and working into a hybrid CFFB / Main Page program to build basic strength (it's working!). Take care! |

090710 FRIDAY

090711 SATURDAY
090712 SUNDAY Both REST DAYS........ Got a good analysis of my R/Knee injury from my friend who is the owner of and Dr. at a local PT clinic. It appears to be one of overuse / over-compensation for the minor hamstring tear of my L/leg. It is probable that I overdid it walking at a high angle - 10% or more on the treadmill, or the relatively large (for me) number of power cleans I'd done in the preceding week +. Rx........more rest days, R.I.C.E., foam rolling, deep tissue massage, and alternate WODs....... |
Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
hey steve i am just checking in with you. i hope the recovery is going well? how long are you supposed to stay off of it & not wod?
i was thinking when you are ready to start working out again if you might be able to do some light tai chi? since crossfit is about: "endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, accuracy, agility, and balance" maybe some light tai chi would help with the balance, accuracy, and coordination? it would be a good way to start moving your body again without hardcore strain. |

Or, how about water exercise! Steve, interesting you mention that you think your problem might have been exasterbated (sp?) by doing treadmill at a steep incline. I'm convinced that my achilles problem developed from walking steep hills...I wasn't even doing any running when it developed. And then, yes, of course, it's actual cause might be from other muscles being weak, and compensations, etc.. But, I stay away from those hills now. |

And it was 110 in Fresno on Saturday. Just nasty! Husband went cycling out to Millerton Lake while I was doing my water cert all day. His cycle computer was reading 120 degrees out on the open road. I told him he's lucky he didn't just drop dead. Irony was that I was in an indoor pool for 3 hours, and was getting hypothermia. I was literally losing the feeling in my fingers. I turned to look at the woman next to me, and her lips were completely blue, and she said she was also losing feeling in her fingers. Go figure! |

Steve, I found this on some random web site. Thought you'd get a kick out of it. As a swimmer, even I found the explanation pretty hilarious. It would be nearly impossible for someone to read this and understand it!! Enjoy!
The Flip Turn, Simplified: Swim fast. Simultaneously do three things, all quickly: tuck your chin to your chest while pulling your outstretched arm to your side (your other arm is at your other side already) and make a little dolphin kick. Be patient and don't do anything else until you are folded in two with legs quite straight and eyes looking up to the surface of the water. Then, at the same time, turn your palms down and press on them while bending your legs and your turn is complete. Don't forget to leave your arms alone. It's your hips that leave your hands, not the other way around. |

Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Good to see your hitting group workouts Steve, its a new thing to me seeing as I only found an affiliate two weeks ago.
I read on Carter's log you wanted some tips on getting upside down. My way of getting over the fear of kicking up a wall was to start on my knees and slowly kick my legs gradually higher and higher until I found contact with the wall. Make sure you put some padding (ab mats) down in case you collapse as its a new position for your body to be in. Even better get a gym buddy to catch your legs until you get use to the position. Hope this helps Steve |

090723 THURSDAY
Got a chance to actually act as a trainer today (for the first time!). Took about 10 to 15 minutes to show a couple of gym regulars (who also mix in CF workouts) some kipping progressions. As for getting inverted, no problem with the "tough love." I fully understand where you are coming from. There is only one place at the globo to really work safely on handstands against a wall - - no place at my house (I'm not really confident enough to do this stuff on a concrete floor yet). I need to find a good area with some lawn or training mats and just "do it." |

090724 AND 090725 FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
REST DAYS. Friday - - most of the day job hunting and did a couple of interviews......perhaps something may come out of this? Saturday - - Spent much of the day working with the Twain Harte Fire Dept. barbecuing hot dogs and linguica for the Annual Craft Fair / Wine Tasting Festival. Lots of fun - - ate too much non-Zone/Paleo stuff, but hey - - it was fun and for a worthy cause. |

Steve, if you have an old futon mattress laying around it works as a skill cushion remarkably well but isn't very mobile. A few of those cheap couch pillows work ok as well but bed pillows are typically too small.

SUNDAY / MONDAY: REST DAYS Job hunting/interviews really has me worn out. . . . .haven't been sleeping well either. 090728 TUESDAY Back at it again. Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Hi Steve,
The job search is just like a CF workout, you just have to keep going and going until you get the job. I do not know much about your job situation, but I have been thru this twice and it just sucks. My only words of encouragement is to keep on until you land a job. The other thing, is that the lack of sleep really affects the workouts as well....this I know as well. Never surrender. TR |
Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Tom,
Many thanks for the great encouragement. I totally agree with you on the physical effects of job searches - - I don't generally tire easily but I've been like a whipped pup lately. I know I'll also feel better once I get my workouts dialed back in - - or at least do something regularly. Take care! |
Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Sending you positive vibes for the job search. But you've got to get in the gym and start doing more CF again...it helps EVERYTHING! Come on Steve!! :)

Hi Steve,
New to the boards here, but wanted to wish you luck on the job hunt. Interviewing for jobs has to be about one of the suckiest, most stressful thing in the world but it's just one of those things that unfortunately we all have to do (sometimes several times) in our lives. Keep your workouts up. It will help with both the stress and sleep. I speak from experience, as I sleep and cope with stress much better with exercise and my diet dialed in. I had high blood pressure before I started to take my fitness serious a few years ago. When I had a stressful day, I would get terrible headaches and feel physically sick. I even took medication for a while for it. I still have stressful days, but the headaches have disappeared and I am able to deal with it more easily. The last time I had my blood pressure checked, the nurse told me it was optimal, not just normal. This was checked at my job site, so that alone should have spiked it, but it didn't. I guess what I'm saying is keep on rockin, and everything will come out fine. |

Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Gordon,
Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement. I didn't realize how fried I'd gotten just through the stress of job hunting. Things are looking up though - - I have a couple of employment prospects and I've gotten back into the workout routine in the last couple of days - - just taking it slowly so I don't tweak anything else. Take care!
Glad to hear that things are looking up Steve. I will be watching your log for updates. Please let us know how you make out. It's amazing that when you take care of your health, that everything else seems to fall into place. That has been my experience anyway. |
