The sandbag/wheelbarrow event is back this year! Yeah, buddy!
That is still one of the most entertaining events of the games. Can't wait to see this year's version of it. |

Yeah, it is stand-up paddle-boarding? Isn't that a HUGE advantage to anyone whose done it before? I have no doubt it's a physical test, but from what I've heard, if you've never done it before, it's hard as hell to figure out, let alone 2 miles?!?! Yikes. |

No, it's not stand up. It's prone, either on your belly or knees and just using your arms to propel yourself. So, there shouldn't be much of an advantage for anyone who's accustomed to being on the water. WFS: http://games.crossfit.com/video/paddleboarding-games-back-story |

Ah, got it, thanks Jayme.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Even though it's not stand-up paddleboarding (which I'm bummed about, but I understand why it's not), it's not remotely hard to learn. I just recently did it with a 5 minute "class" and was up and running after about 5 minutes of trying, and I have terrible balance and worse body awareness. The games athletes would do just fine with it.

The video Jayme posted showed the "legend" of the sport saying these athletes may fall off the first time they try to go up on their knees. I think they'll pick it up quick, but losing even 1-3 minutes to somebody who may already know how to do the faster kneeling position could amount to a lot. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I see no reason why the athletes won't be given the opportunity today to learn the device. This happened in past years with other "new" implements.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
i have no doubt they'll be able to get the hang of it.
paddleboarding just doesn't seem spectator friendly when watching people trying to learn it during competition; nor is it anything i'd ever want to do as part of a wod. hopefully they do get an opportunity beforehand to try to get a feel for it. One more hour 'til the teens start up and i find out how weak / out of shape i really am :D *edit* as for sandbag carry -- besides heavier weights and different (i'm guessing sturdier) wheelbarrows, is the format pretty much the same as back in 2010? a comment from someone who was there:
Well, let me frame my critique! I thought the sandbag event was really boring to watch... however, it was probably one of the best tests of real world fitness. Spectator wise it was something similar to watching unskilled manual labor for fun. :D
|
