Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
With that much weight going over head and that much money on the line, I could see even elite Crossfitters getting hurt doing a speed snatch ladder. Not to mention, what happens if barbells going flying into a competitor on a miss.
Yes my first thought was how small the tennis stadium playing field is, and how close quarters even the speed clean ladder was last year. I suppose without the handstand wall set up there they could spread it out a tiny bit more. Maybe they will only have 4 snatches each round rather than the 5 cleans, to give even more space? The last thing the CrossFit brand needs is to have a big accident broadcast on ESPN. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I hear ya. I had the same concerns about athlete injuries and risk to those nearby when the speed snatch ladder was announced.
However, the speed clean ladder raised the same concerns in my mind without major mishap last year. It should be interesting to see if the snatch event can run smoothly and safely. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
It will be interesting to see if they allow dropping the bar behind you or do the silly jump over the bouncing bar thing.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I think the problem with the dropping behind is that it's (relatively) easier to kinda pass right through the "show control" phase and go right to the drop. I stress "relatively." In the grand scheme, I find it surprising that athletes continue to trip over bars. As fast as these events are, they still rarely come down to fractions of seconds. Trying to get over so fast that you're awkwardly hurdling that first big bounce, and risking a faceplant, versus waiting less than a 1-mississippi and easily stepping over the (now settling) bar seems like a no-brainer. I know heat of the moment and everything, but that's part of competing, not letting the moment push you into doing something irresponsible.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
My guess is that they don't want athletes to drop the bar behind them to avoid a Kevin Ogar type injury. Jumping over a bar and tripping is minor compared to that.
I hope they use the dead-bounce competition plates, though. Minimizing the bounce would really help with a speed ladder event. Check out Dan Bailey practicing this event with some high bounce plates: https://www.facebook.com/CrossFitGames/videos/932078753500650/ (wfs) He's really taking his time walking from bar to bar. He has to wait for that high bounce to stop. Also, not a competition - just a practice. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I could kinda agree with that, if there was actual evidence that Ogar's injury was caused by falling back onto the bar. I maintain, and I know read opinions that agreed, that his injury happened DURING the lift, that he fell back because of the injury, even if it took until he fell and hit something for him to feel the pain (or if that pain was worse than his internal injury). Anyways.....my point remains, even with those high bounce plates, all he had to do was wait for the very first bounce to settle, then easily, and slowly, stepped over. With competition plates, the bar would settle even faster, just take a half-breath after dropping, then jump and you'll be fine.

yes the bouncy plates are dangerous.. unless its reps with dead lift.. love those plates..

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Who knows? Maybe they will allow dropping the bar behind. It's a lot different dropping a snatch behind than a clean, and it's even a little different than a dropping a jerk behind.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I thought they said they weren't going to allow dropping behind anymore. Partly because they could injure a judge in a neighboring lane.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
are the teens gonna be using the same schedule / events as the individuals? Events page sorta updated with schedule but still only the 3 same tabs (Individuals / Teams / Masters)
