Maybe this is the year Reebok steps it up and supplies everyone with gear at Regionals as well

I could care less but I can see it happening. Over half the athletes would likely show up in Nikes.
Just saw on Mitch Barnard's instagram that there are rumors of only reebok gear being allowed at regionals. Has anyone else heard or seen anything about this? If it's true it seems pretty absurd to require that, when regional competitors arent given the loads of free reebok gear like the games athletes are.
If they supply the uniform for the competition completely, then fine, no problem, but if not and they still require it, that's ridiculous, especially because at that level the athletes are still paying their own way and paying an entrance fee

Sam Briggs did qualify for Regionals didn't she ?

Have there been any athletes who have been to the games before who have not qualified for regionals ? (bigger names)

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Now here is a really silly question ? Why did they not (or better yet), when will they just combine the "Super" Regions during the Open and take the top 40 from there. They will eventually run into exactly what has happened in the past. The top 5-10 from each Region will be competitive but the bottom 10 will not be as much.

Wonder if this will happen down the road

FYI, Sam Briggs is in the South Regional this year. She won the South East.

She finished 8th in the South East. The C&J killed her score.

Ok with 10 days until Master Qual.. what do you think that the workouts are going to be.

I think some sort of a max- Snatch might be the likely candidate.
Repeat of one of last years because HQ likes that. Maybe the Row, HSPU and Double unders with the new standards?
One of the girls workouts? Jackie?
One including burpees and box jumps maybe Heavy deadlift with it..

I have been wrong many or even all times.. this would suit me fine. Good luck with all of the workouts all master athletes.

I could see the regions as they are now used to determine those who qualify for a second stage of online workouts. This would be a qualifier stage similar to the Masters qualifier. Individuals do six workouts in a 72 hour period; teams do six team workouts in the same time period. All WODS are filmed and reviewed. Teen qualifiers would also do these wods to determine who goes on to the Games. Scores as follows- Individuals and Teens: 6 scores from the workouts, 1 from the regional placement in the Open, and 1 from worldwide rank in the Open. Teams- just the six scores.

Absolutely killing me waiting for these workouts. Still 10 days to go. It's like being still in the open for us whereas everyone else has moved onto regionals or looked for a new competition.

Totally agree on the snatch. Last year it was clean, then we had clean & jerk in 15.1. If there going to stick with an oly max my moneys on 1rm snatch. This would rule out Amanda being the repeat workout (even though I am still practising it).
Just been looking over the Open results

Each year there are more and more competitors but more and more questionable results

And this does affect the top athletes

Crossfit are absolutely raking it in from the Open
There is a guy in my region that made regionals last year, and was one of the bottom athletes in almost every workout, struggling on several movements. My coach/owner smoked him. This year, that guy TORCHED the Open, beating my owner in several workouts, including the more gymnastic ones (where this guy is way more built for strength). It's super suspicious, considering my owner's g/f saw him at a comp a few months ago and his build is unchanged from last year, as far as she could tell. Good on him if he improved, but it's so vast, it seems hard to believe. I will be watching that regional very closely to see how he performs.

I looked through the masters workouts that were in previous editions of the Masters Games. Here are some of the events that I think could be in the Masters Qualifier.

2010:
3. Fran: 21-15-9 Thrusters 95, pull ups

2011:
3. 3 RFT: 4 MU, 8 thruster 135

2012:
1. 1RM S2O
3. Row 1K, 30 PC 135, 50 burpee
5. 10 DL 275, 20 pull ups, 30 BJ 24, 40 KB 53, 50 DU, 40 KB 53, 30 BJ 24, 20 pull ups, 10 DL 275
6. AMRAP 2: muscle ups

2013:
4. DL/BJ 21-15-9 DL 275 BJ 30
5. 1RM C&J

2014:
5. Row 1000m, then 5RFT: 25 pull ups & 7 push jerk 135
7. 50 BJ, 25 TTB, 50 WB, 25 RD, 50 WB, 25 TTB, 50 BJ

I eliminated all the ladder events, and events with running, or sleds in them.

I am still hoping for a DL-BJ-HSPU workout.

Out of those masters events, I think these are the most interesting and challenging:

3 RFT: 4 MU, 8 thruster 135
Row 1K, 30 PC 135, 50 burpee

There is a guy in my region that has a lot of people scratching their heads for a similar reason, but it's completely legit. His build hasn't changed but his fitness in all areas has skyrocketed in a short time. In addition to improving his physical game, his strategy and mental game have dramatically improved. It will be interesting to see how these guys do!

I know we are talking about the literal top 3 of the elite, but look at Khalipa in the 2013/2014 games. He has always looked relatively the same. Same bodyweight and essentially just like a big blocky dude (for a Crossfitter.). By simply changing up his programming (or adding to it is more like it) and hiring an endurance coach and doing things like 10x800m splits with little rest, his endurance skyrocketed and he placed 2nd to Rich. Again, I know he was already and consistently was a top 5 competitor but the point is, the body doesn't have to change much in order for the fitness to change. The down side of him being elite though is that the changes are subtle. Top end athletes grind for YEARS to increase a lift by 10kgs. This guy you are talking about, while obviously decent enough to make regionals is still in the bracket of "huge improvements can happen in a year".

I'd say most of all improvement is about how dark can you go and how much do you want it mentality anyway. That stuff is NEVER visible from the outside, on paper and very rarely makes any sense. Guys that shouldn't be doing what they do yet they do.

Yes so many huge jumps.. makes you scratch your head. But one could change a bad diet to a world class one and make some huge gains.. Someone could have been injured or not taking it seriously and then get wheelhouse workouts gain so many spaces.. everyone has their own stories.

Also some people are really good at doing one workout hard a week then go to regionals then can't recover fast enough to keep up.

Or they hit a goat..

8 days till they announce the Master Qual workouts. Will be a fun weekend.

For once I was finally right about a workout - DL-BJ-HSPU!

I also thought they would have Jackie, so I was sort of right about that too.

I am glad that there are no WB in the MQ this year.

I am suprised that there is no OHS in the MQ.

These MQ wods are no joke. You've got to be really good to do well at all 4 wods.

Victor J McQuaide 04-24-2015 09:04 AM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Yes #1 and #3 are crazy hard..

The 200# place guy (45-49) put up a 12:49 on the #3.. must have a super fast Jackie.. basically two 6:30's in a row with adding 20# to the thruster and c2b instead of pull ups.. His 15.5 and 15.2 was not that good so gotta question that time or am I missing something. WTBS I have seen some great efforts out of people when the pressure is on.

The snatch is straight forward.

The #4 DL/BJ/HSPU with the new standard is a good one.

Michael Cook 04-24-2015 02:42 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I think the 12:49 score you are thinking of for the #200 guy in the M45-49 is for event #4, the DL-BJ-HSPU, which would seem about right.

MQ#3 the row-thruster-c2b I think is going to be 14-20mins for M45-49.

They should have made that #4, because I think everyone will do that one last anyway.

Victor J McQuaide 04-24-2015 03:55 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Mike Cook you are right.. that was for #4.. I was worried.

Yes 14 or 15 would be a super sweet time.. adding 20# to the bar and going C2B takes the broken out of un broken Jackie.. Going a second round turns it into a endurance met con. Just gotta keep on going. Resting on a bit.

Cheers

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I think the MQ wods were a good test of strength, skills and endurance.

A 1rm will always favor the bigger guys, but at least since it is a snatch, rather than clean or DL, it also tests some skill and mobility.

Jacked up Jackie was way harder than I thought it would be. Took me about 20 minutes for heart rate to come back down to resting level.

It will be interesting to see what comes up for regionals. Seems like lots of people are practicing HS walking and complicated pull up-ttb-bmu complexes.

I have a feeling regionals could be something completely different. For example: KB snatches+KB OHS+KB pistols.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

yes hang on to your gymnasty skills.. I am sure that the regionals will test some things that people need to work on.. Great Job Mike Cook on the Master's qual. Was so much harder than last year.. 3k more old dudes coming into the mix..

Master's and Teens on the soccer field? I have seen people saying so.. read the blurb about the tickets... it is for sure true?

If so wonder how that will effect the events.. ? Will be a super big place with a lot of seats empty... Mid line march type of things.. or might they just set up a rig and put some heavy mats down.. running in the stadium like the individuals..

Will be interesting to see what happens.

I only saw one person making this claim about the masters in the stadium, and her second comment says she just thought it was implied in the article and has no inside information, I don't think it's true. Did you hear it anywhere else? I don't see how they could do all the setup (equipment set up and run throughs, camera blocking for the media team) that goes into the team and individual events while the masters are there.

Here is what it says on page 11 of the Rulebook:

"Each Region will perform the same events, in the same order. Events will be announced on the CrossFit Games website prior to the start
of Regional competition."

The first regional weekend starts with the South and Atlantic regional May 15-17, so it should be soon.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Some good stuff (really dig Tommy V. Hell of a test of fitness), but also some classic movements that--in my opinion--continue to discredit us as a fitness event in the eyes of athletes outside our community. And those eyes matter to me because I'd love to have a competition that decathletes, football players, fighters, and military people would look at and go "damn, they really might be the fittest people on earth".

Handstand walks do not get that reaction because being able to go long distance quickly on your hands is an incredibly specialized skill that transfers over to virtually no real world activities (talking about the neurological skill, not the physical endurance to be able to go 250 ft, which is transferable). I'm not saying handstands in general are useless but do we really want a competition where someone faster, stronger, more powerful, with better endurance doesn't get to the games because they couldn't walk well on their hands? I, personally, don't.

My other gripe is with the SDHP, but, whatever. Most people around here have heard enough griping about that movement already.

Truthfully? I am a million percent fine with someone missing the games because they can't handstand walk, especially after last year. If you have gotten to the top 20 in a region without understanding that your gonna have to walk on your hands quite a ways to progress, then you probably don't deserve to go. Also, Power, speed, endurance and agility are only 4 of the 10 General physical skills. Balance and coordination are tested in the handstand walk in a way that a lot of other moves can't accomplish. Are there other moves that can test those aspects as well? Sure. But the crabbing about handstand walks is really pretty played out.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all the WOD announcements. I'm going to be judging this year, and a team from my gym that has a real shot at the games is competing!

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I'm getting pumped about Regionals. These events will be fun to watch, for the most part.

I'm really digging the animated graphics that explain the layout and flow of each event. Very easy to understand.

My first thoughts about the TrueForm Runner were:
- boring to watch, especially if they don't have any way to show their progress in the mile,
- product placement.

Then I thought about it some more. Different Regional venues may not allow for an easy layout for a one mile run. A machine is going to standardize the test of fitness between regions. It's going to contain the action to one spot in their lane.

Richard Colon 05-05-2015 08:43 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I get both Dave's and Diane's side of the handstand walk convo and I'm not going to belabor the point about it to much more, as Diane said - its beaten' to death already. It is more of my discussion about it rather than saying yay or nay to having an event like the HS walk exist at all.

However,

While it did not invalidate, discredit, put a shadow, or asterisk on last years games, not having Sam there strictly because of a handstand walk was kinda bleh. I get it. Rules are rules and you play the game as everyone has to play it. Again, those that made it deserved to and Sam didn't deserve to, per staying consistent to what Castro and the other decision makers believe in. I stand by and respect that 100%.

From the outside looking in though, without seeing all the details and nuances of how the top level can literally have 0 weaknesses these days, it just doesn't add up. The Crossfit games claims the winner to be 'The Fittest on Earth.' Sam Briggs didn't even get a shot to prove that because of one workout, which if removed, has no bearing on whether someone is fit or not. When she walked away from that event, and from the regionals and while not participating in the 2014, there was no doubt, that Sam Briggs was sitting out there as quite possibly, still the fittest woman on earth. Yet a handstand walk kept someone that was still most likely the fittest woman on earth out of contention to prove that and that event did nothing to show that she possibly wasn't the fittest that year. That may be the weird, doesn't add up part to it all.

What's next? Some top games athlete that we all KNOW is one of the fittest in the world missing out because they can't triple under consistently? Cinco 1 with a HS walk to finish brilliant. So is the GHD, OH lunge, start the HS walk over if you fall event from last year. An entire event that can make or break you though that doesn't prove fit or otherwise...meh. As Dave said. NFL players, Decathletes, MMA fighters, Special forces military could all be easily in contention to be considered the fittest people on earth, depending on your criteria. Rich Froning, is in my opinion, the fittest ever, but I can't discredit someone that finishes the Badwater or a Sherpa that climbs Everest ahead of others, setting a path. Every one of those people can easily get away with not being able to do a HS walk for any respectable distance and STILL be in a conversation for the fittest people on the planet (again, depending on criteria). Yet, if they can be in that conversation, yet miss the opportunity to prove it in a competition to crown the fittest on earth, because of their ability (or lack thereof) to HS walk or not..weird.
