I kind of hope they go back to grass roots a bit for this year, and have more stuff that is something you can't really practice at home/gym, less technique oriented stuff and more pure simple fitness, like they have done in previous games.

What kind of grass roots stuff do you have in mind?

Sandbag carry comes to mind, from the 2010 games.

That was a really good video. Really enjoyed it.
What kind of grass roots stuff do you have in mind?
Like i said more stuff you cant exactly train for in the gym (ex: 2012 I think they had double unders and that sledgehammer thing), odd object carry, maybe odd shape rocks/stones loading, less technical lifts so that fitness is the major test not skill.

Don't get me wrong i'm not saying throw out everything, you need some events that are high skill, just like you need events that are longer time domains, shorter domains, power, strength etc...but there wasn't much unknowable or reall unexpected in terms of exercise selection last year

i like the events that have equipment that is readily available but used in an unexpected way e.g. clean sprint ladder.

The sprint carry had odd objects. The sprint sled was a brand new piece of equipment, as was the Big Bob (is that what they called it?). Plus, the Push and Pull had the athletes pulling the drag sled all arms while seated, which I doubt a lot of people previously trained/tried. Unknown/unknowable is a great philosophy, but you can't expect every single event to be some completely new everything. Most of the wods are going to remain typical CF programming: either simple couplets or triplets, that play with the weights, rep schemes, intervals, whatever, or the occasional long chipper that tackle a lot of movements and test pacing and endurance. I think each year seeing just one or two truly "unknown/unknowable" aspects is plenty. You don't want athletes that train certain movements all year to find virtually none of them in their global competition.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Come Friday we will all know...

I still think some type of ladder for time (8-15minutes) or something with a ladder EMOM.

Have these two fight it out means only 1 thing.... weight increase or rep increase and something small on top of it to hit the lungs heavy.

http://games.crossfit.com/video/crossfit-games-update-february-23-2015 (wfs)

This video discusses athletes that have moved and changed regions for this year's competition.

Sam Briggs moved to the South East Region. The commentary is, "She IS going to take one of the top five spots." Maybe Sam thought, "There is no way I'm missing the Games again this year," and moved to where she knew she could make that happen. Honestly, moving to an "easier" region is often speculated. I doubt that actually happens. There are a lot of other factors that make someone move.

I was also thinking that it has been five years since the individual women had an American win the Games.

2010 - Kristen Clever (US)
2011 - Annie Thorisdottir (Iceland)
2012 - Annie Thorisdottir (Iceland)
2013 - Sam Briggs (UK)
2014 - Camille Leblanc-Bazinet (Canada)

Tonight:

11 minute amrap: 10 snatches/15 wallballs. Snatches will be ascending: 75, 105, 135, 165, 195, 225, 255, 285

That's my guess anyway. With the vid posted of Rich doing snatch-grip pulls off the blocks last night, I think a snatch has to be involved.

Tighe Crovetti 02-26-2015 07:49 AM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

The athletes 100% have no idea what the WOD is going to be. At best, Rich is just guessing like the rest of us.

I see barbells, bumper plates, a plyo box, and a small Rogue rig. It may be some variation of Fran? Maybe deadlifts, box jumps, pull-ups? We'll know tonight. It should be a fun show.

...Or Castro could just be trolling by laying out equipment that won't be used.

Bingo. Have we all forgotten about last year already? This was commonplace.

And as far as posting the video of Rich snatching off blocks, HQ doesn't ever give vague hints as to what the WODs will be. They come right out occasionally with things like the chipper video last year though.

I just like taking a stab at it. Its true though, everything could be misdirection. Nobody would ever suspect they'd get two guys together that are great with a barbell and have them do burpee box jumps and triple unders, but it could happen.

Remember these 2 guys placed 1 and 2 at the CrossFit Games, not the "Heavy Barbell Games". Castro might want to make a point that these guys are more than just good lifters. Could just be a light burner...

For some reason I'm thinking a retest from 2011 of 11.3 or 11.4:

I guess more so 11.4

The OHS were 120# for men and at that time was considered heavy. I would bet scores would be much higher if it was retested.

Froning's team has begun to appear. So far he is with Matt Hewett (obviously), and the ladies thus far are Elly Kabboord (http://games.crossfit.com/athlete/58202 wfs) and Kristin Reffett (http://games.crossfit.com/athlete/3605 wfs)......

I wonder who else will be added. I assumed Thomas Cox but we will see

That would be a waster of their both's time.

Anything but hard and fast will be a surprise on my side, I am quite positive there will be barbells. Id love to see some heavy deadlifing, real heavy.

I hope so too. The heavier the better. By now, though, I've come to the thought that Castro would do something to throw us off.

Why did froning decide to compete in team? Is he trying to help ramp up the interest in it, or maybe help push it toward becoming a more legitimate team sport outside of the crossfit games?

I see a rig, 295lbs of plates and a box.

I'm sure some or all of it won't be used and they're just putting stuff out to mess with people but that's all we have to go off of for now.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

We all are forgetting its the Open and it needs to be relatively easy, so masses can do it too.

So what I feel is some kinda ladder type. Like 5 box jumps, 5 deads, 5 pullups, next 10 each, next 15, etc etc..until some timelimit hits.

With a scaled division does it need to be relatively easy?

Dare Vodusek 02-26-2015 01:55 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Well if we want a real hard workout that those elite two males can do, I am sure it would be too much even for some of the games athletes, so my guess is Castro will go a bit easier, but still hard enough to be impressive.

Also bear in mind, Castro wants a show, so surely it will be a WOD which will be quite equal till the end.

I wouldn't expect the addition of the scaled division to have any effect on the RX'ed WOD's. The open will most likely be as it has been in the last few years.

Same. I think the scaled just lets them substitute double unders for single unders, CTB for regular pullups, etc. And if there is a ladder I'd assume the weight would start slightly lower and not increase as quickly.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

15 min AMRAP
4 Muscle ups
8 DL with 275#
12 bar facing burpees

Froning 11 rounds even
Down goes Fraser 10 rounds

Steven Ngo 02-26-2015 06:23 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

15.1. & 15.1a scored separately:

Amrap 9 minutes:

15 Toes to bar
10 deadlifts (115lbs / 75lbs)
5 snatches (115 / 75)

After 9 minutes:

6 minutes for 1-rep max clean & jerk

Steven Thunander 02-26-2015 06:45 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Best strategy...

Warm up your Clean and Jerk to about 95% of your 1rm before starting the WOD. then warm up your snatch and TTB.

Also, I am expecting more A/B workouts. Perhaps a max snatch, or two AMRAPs. Look at the Wodaplooza, Granite Games, and OC Throwdown qualifer WODS for more ideas.

I'm pretty sure if I warmed up to 95% of my 1rm, I sure as **** wouldn't want to do much else.

Depends on how much you CJ.

Let's say you're a Regional/Games level competitor. Which means anywhere from #300 (maybe #250-275 in weaker regions)-350ish.

Even with the recovery capability they have I'm not sure that's such a swift idea.

Better to just treat the 6m like a ladder.

Well, your opener should be 90% roughly so I guess 95% is pretty close.

My buddy took 4 attempts and missed the jerk at 275#. Unknown score during the first part. He's gonna do it again anyways and I think this was more of a trial run. He did not warmup his CJ prior just watched the match, lol.
