Bench vs. Seated Shoulder Press
 
In Starting Strength, Rippetoe makes the case that the Press is a more functional exercise than the Bench Press because its kinetic chain starts at the ground, versus that of the Bench Press which starts at the bench.

So, then, what happens when we take the more functional aspect of the Press out of the lift and turn it into a Seated Shoulder Press? Is the movement still more functional than that of the Bench Press, despite the kinetic chain not being grounded? Which is a more worthwhile exercise?

It's hard to say between the seated press and the bench press. The seated press removes the limiting factor from the press, core stabalization. Neither the seated or bench press are very functional.
