Watching the announcement from Dave Castro he was clear.. this will separate those that should be at the top of the leaderboard and those who should not and where they should be.

Quite fair I would say now after hearing that.
These tests are also great for figuring out who are the novice, intermediate, advanced, elite, and Games level athletes (notice 5 RXed levels!)
Take the bell curve from individuals competing RXed and slice it like this:
Novice: bottom 30% of those competing at rxed (highest score at end)
Intermediate: 31-70%
Advanced: 71-95%
Elite: 96-98%
Games level: 99-100% (lowest score at end)
Beginner/novice: May be doing this to score higher than those in scaled. May only be able to get a few reps of RXed, but does it anyway to have something to work toward next year.
Intermediate: Yes, intermediate is 40% of the total scores! This demonstrates proficiency in most movements, and competence in some of the more skilled and strength biased moves but also shows that work needs to be done in all areas.
Advanced: Proficient in all movements. Strong as hell with a great engine. But not enough to be part of an affiliate team that has a shot a regionals. Strong at local competitions.
Elite: Same as above but with that added edge. A group of these folks could possibly compete for an affiliate team slot at regionals. Your local box hero. These would make up those under top 60 in their regions. This person is a star at local competitions and could make it into wodapalooza or Granite Games, for example.
Games athlete: Very few weaknesses apparent to outsiders. A group of these would go to regionals as part of a team. Has best shot at regionals. Engine and strength unmatched by those in their gym and gyms in the locality (unless they are in Socal or Norcal). Top 60 CFers in their region.

Scaled levels: Beginner, intermediate, novice.

Pretty much everyone in the advanced level and below in RXed and those doing this scaled are doing it for fun and as benchmarks. Even the elites are doing this one for fun, but are more so doing this for their box (many of the competitors at this level are coaches). Only the Games level competitors are doing this for a slot into the CrossFit games.
Got it :)

So what group does someone end up in if they mix both scaled and Rx?

I went scaled for the 15.1 and Rx 15.2 and now I can see myself in the Rx group or does this depend on your last choice?
There really isn't "Rx" and "scaled" groups. Everyone is still in one group, it's just that the scaled wods let you still do a standardized Open workout and stay in the mix, with your rank in the overall population affected appropriately (i.e., any time you do scaled, you will, de facto, rank below anyone who did it Rx). Like someone said, I think that filter on the leaderboard just depends on whether you've done all wods Rx or not.

I did 15.1 scaled and 15.2 Rx and I can find myself in the Rx leaderboard but not in the scaled when using the filter. I thought if you did 1 of the WODs in scaled you would remain in the scaled division for the remainder of The Open.

Agree - plus it all depends on the individuals goal.. it is getting as high up on the list as possible or performing as well as possible?

Going scaled as you say and getting a high score or RX and getting just a few reps.

Has anyone made a custom leaderboard of the games athletes from last year? Or just all the big names in general - so still include Briggs/Valenzuela/Hendren/etc.

Here is my prediction for 15.3:

For time:
21-15-9-6-3
Deadlift 225/185
Box jump 24/20

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Some surprises some not so much surprises.

big surprise seeing another young Canadian female come out and put up such a huge score in 15.1/15.1a topping even Camille, another surprise is seeing Camille not C&J oaver 230lbs.

Another surprise is how low Paul Tremblay finished in 15.1/15.1a i mean I expected the big C&J but thought he'd have more in 15.1.

a NOT so surprising thing, how Sam Briggs still has a big engine, but lacking in strength (15.1a) I don't know if its that she needs to squat more and make her stick legs grow or something but she needs to shore up some weaknesses in her game.

I also think its interesting to see who's brought up what weakness during the "offseason" by way of their results in workouts. example Noah Ohlsen is doing really well in all the longer workouts/engine based ones, any of the heavier stuff he falls by the wayside.

I have it on good info she had some kind of (minor) injury holding her back on 15.1a.

We've had two wods that both included hanging from a bar and a barbell. I say 15.3 has neither. Straight up burner, I think, some or all of: doubles, burpees, wall balls, box jumps.

I hope she can recover, not having her in the Games last year was tough. I enjoy watching her compete and she seems to have a great mindset/personality. We will see! If the spots were guaranteed there wouldn't be an Open or Regional (or whatever they're calling it this year!)

Mike Cook.. HSPU, DL and box jumps.. what a dream you had.

The event is sponsored by Rx Smart Gear so hope they get Double unders.. should see them soon.

Wonder if you can knock out the following off the list of what is coming?
Snatch
DL
T2B
C and J
C2B
OHS

Leaving:
Double unders
S2O
Clean
Wall balls
Snatch max?
Box jumps
Muscle ups
HR push ups
Bar facing burpees
Thrusters
Burpees to a target
Row

New ones?-
HSPU
3 unders
Pistols
Hand stand walks

Hope something that sounds good... will see..

3 more days left.

Even if strength is her weakness, eg oly lifts, is there really that much one can do in less than a year about it? My guess is no and several years are needed.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Lets not forget....SHE WON THE GAMES! I mean, she's not perfect, and yes she had a bad day last year at the Regionals, but we're talking about her like she's some Games fringe athlete. If she can recover from her injuries, she'll give Camille, Letendre, Bridgers, and the rest a good run for their money.

I dont get the relevance of her pic in this thread lol

I don't think upper body is lacking strength at least by evidenced in her bench video, she was the only one in her team who didn't cheat and she did pretty good.

but strength and oly stuff doesn't seem to be her forte

On another note, saw Matt Chan's name on leaderboard is he going team? Masters? Men's individual?

Sam is strong but she isn't super clean at the Olympic Lifts. She did manage to qualify to the AO but she bombed out on Snatches and CJ 95. Her snatch has come a long way from this. Her jerk is still rough but 82/100 is pretty good for a 63. If anything she probably isn't that consistent at the higher loads given what her technique looks like.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNZA2vpyA_4

As big as Sam looks like, she is only 63kg even though she looks bigger than Annie with her guns. Annie is the same height but has a good 7-8kg on her and obviously it's solid mass.

Ya, I saw a video he posted and the doctor said if he wasn't so fit, it could have been deadly. Then I saw the grossest picture of his quad hanging out of his leg! I think Chan is going men's individual, I'll be pulling for him. He said someday that he and Spealler would go master's and he knows that Froning would go master's too! Because the fact that english is not my first language you feel the need to bash me...awesome, BTW you missed a word or two in your sentence.

the picture was useless, we've all seen her, so showing a pic of her on the beach really does nothing. I can honestly say everytime I see her compared to other crossfit women she looks thin, especially in the limbs (primarily lower), so this wasn't me picking on her due to injury, this is something i've noticed every time. Just like i've also noticed she doesn't do that great on the more strength and oly oriented stuff.

If it's implicated on his IG, then I would say in Castro head fake tradition, it will be anything but. I think we will see pistols and DU's at some point. Still have HSPU, burpee, box jump, rowing, and wall balls too.

If there is one thing we know about Castro...it is that he loves to fake us out. He always puts rigs up at events and then has us doing burpees, rowers out and it ends up being barbell movements. He loves that. BUT, with that said it would be totally Dave Castro if he put it on his IG to make us think "he won't do it now" and then he does it. :yikes:

So you're saying it was simply a skill level thing? I thought maybe it was a judge-ability, or establishing consistency, etc... Fair enough. I'm all for non-deficit HSPU!

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I'm pretty sure anyone who can do a muscle up can also do a HSPU, so it can't be that they're too hard... I always thought it was a judging thing, it's not super easy to see if arms are locked out at the same time feet are on the wall. Sure experienced judges get an eye for it, but most judges at your gym during the Open aren't experienced judges...

I think that is not a clue for the next Open workout. Way too obvious, and I don't think he would do that.

I also noticed in both live announcements there were boxes, and yet there has not been box jumps yet. We will find out tomorrow.

I am still sticking with my guess of 21-15-9-6-3 of DL-BJ-HSPU.

Rx Ropes is sponsoring the event... so that would be too obvious.. right?? Or maybe it is so obvious they will do it? Anyway hope that they do it.. not just a chunk but something like..

10 pistols
20 HSPu
30 Du's

10 min AMRAP

or
100 pistols
200 HSPU
300 Double unders..

That would be a cool one... calling Dr. Elbow.. Dr. Tennis Elbow..

But I have not ever predicted the workout.. all I know that is I would love a wheel house one.. guess they want us to improve out weakness so they are all good like Rich and CLB.

I like the first one but reverse the reps on HSPU and pistols. 20 pistols easy, 20 HSPU will be a lot of people staring at the wall for a while. Especially if they are strict, which I could see.

I think for those using a video camera, judging for HSPU would be difficult to verify full range of motion, heels touching the wall, hands inside the box (games standards), etc..
