Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Would be so much video review. I think that you will see the usual suspects going to the regionals.. and some up an comers do the same. Sadly your buddy from your box is not going to make regionals this year. Was fun to get the shirts and cheer for your horse in the race. Will be different but some of the guys/girls who did not make the top 3 in the hard regions will make it now that they take some of the single regional spots from the people who are not on the top. It will put the best of the best at Regionals and then games. Be interesting to see what Lindsey V, Sam Briggs, Garrett Fisher and others that were champs and in top 3-5 will do to get back in the mix. People like Amanda Allen and Danielle Sidell should get into the games. Go Amanda!
This could be achieved by requiring the top 100 from each region to participate in an online qualifier on the same weekend as the Masters qualifier, with a similar format. Teams would also be required to participate in team WODS that weekend. I could see something like this in 2016.
I don't see what another round of competition adds to the Games season. The Open is the qualifier. What benefit do you expect by adding an online qualifier between the Open and Regionals? |

It also allows your local box hero a chance, and gives teams a qualifying round before regionals. It also gives HQ another source of money as those who qualify will have to pay another entry fee for it, and the winners of their respective region's sectionals (both individuals and team)will also qualify for prize money. Hypothetically, Scoring for individuals would be the same as the masters- 6 workout scores plus one for superregional rank and one for worldwide rank in the Open. Teams would be scored on their six workouts alone. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Okay, I see where you're coming from.
I thought Regionals replaced the old sectionals. The Open is one workout per week. It's pretty lax on recovery demands. An online qualifer in one weekend would be a more taxing test of recovery, but I don't think it would be a test of Games conditions. You're not competing shoulder to shoulder with other athletes if you're submitting online workouts. An in-person Regionals is a better test of Games conditions. I think the Open provides enough spread of scores that those who should qualify for Regionals do. |

Yes or no on the following RX open-
HSPU? yes hope so for me HS Walks? yes hope so for me Bar Muscle ups? yes hope so for me Pistols? yes hope so for me Over or unders- could be adding weight like 13.1 or 14.3 Cleans or C&J over 200# Snatch over 200# |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I think no HSPU, HS walk or pistols in the Open. So, Vic, you will have to wait until the Games to show off your HS walking and pistoling skills.
I would love to see bar muscle ups in the Open, and I think that is possible. I haven't taken the judges course this year, but I remember last year it was a movement that was covered in the judges test. I think HSPU will be in Masters qualifier, and handstand walking and pistols wil be in regionals. I think we will see an Open wod with ascending weights. We've had ascending weights of snatches is 2012 and 2013 and ascending weights of DL in 2014, so it should be something else - thrusters or clean and jerks. I also predict that the Masters qualifier will have a 1-3rm strength and a benchmark workout. I'm hoping for OHS for the strength and Diane or Jackie for the benchmark. I think regionals will have a 1-3rm strength and a hero wod. I think snatch + OHS would be a good test for regionals. Not sure what would be a good hero wod for regionals. Regionals will also have some sort of nasty, soul-sucking chipper like the 100's in 2013 (DU-WB-C2B-DBSN) or the 50's in 2014 (row-bjo-dl-wb-rd-wb-dl-bjo-row). |

Bench press. Bench press will be in the open.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I seriously doubt HS walks will be in the open. Near impossible to correctly video with other movements. Plus it really takes away the "garage crossfitter". The works almost have to be movements that can all be done in a relatively small amount of space.
I could see HSPU's although they too would be very hard to video. Probably the reason regular pushups have never been in there (at least that I can remember). Pistols - Zero chance. My guess is less than 10% of crossfitters can do them. My guess is the WODs will not be that different from past opens. Maybe a little heavier. |

My coach's opinion was similar. The Rx Open will look very much like past opens, with the exception of the "gimme" weights. No more 75# snatches or 95# thrusters, or if they're in there, you'll ascend, the whole WOD won't be at those weights. The only movement I can see them adding is bar MU. HSPU's aren't covered in the judges course, so I really doubt those will appear, even though they are video-able and "compact." |
