Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Hey Steve. Hard work requires hard rest! You need it!
If you look at the way the WODs are designed it is usually more push-ups than pull-ups. Usually a 2:1 ratio but I'd think the most you'd want to shoot for is a 4:1 ratio of push-ups to pull-ups to keep you in balance. Keep in mind that 90% of the american public is very quad/chest/shoulder strong and very weak back & posterior chain. I attribute this to too much sitting ... couches, desks, computers, and cars and not enough hard work. Also, traditional male workouts include bench, biceps, etc.... No back, glute, hamstring. Most people sit all day so they can pay someone else to do the hard stuff for them. As Rip says...something like....just because desks were invented it doesn't discount the need for the human body to work hard. OK, i know, sorry, i'm probably preaching to the choir on this one! :D
On the contrary, Helen; I don't think you're preaching at all. You are right-on on this subject. I have never, unfortunately, really worked properly to develop P-chain strength or chest/shoulder strength until I began CrossFit. The CF program has forced that development, much to my appreciation. I've always been naturally strong in my back, abs, and quads, but that was it. Getting to do push ups and pull-ups has been worse than pulling teeth for me. I have long arms for my height and in terms of physics, longer levers with short fulcrums (attachment points of tendons for the prime movers low on the bone). This makes me comparatively "less functionally strong" than a shorter person or one my height with more proportionally "correct" limb length. I never realized, even after having been a trainer, that quad vs. hamstring strengths were to be more equal than not. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand the proper ratio to be where one's hams are about 65 to 70 percent of the strength of their quads. Some athletes have about a 1:1 strength ratio. My ratio used to be about 4:1 quads over hams! Anyway, sorry for the long-winded response, but you got me thinking.....again - - and I really appreciate it! Steve |

yup...that's fine!!! Tucker will access your capabilities from minute 0. He'll teach you the movements and show you safe and effective progressions to learn movements such as the muscle-up. in short, he will never put you in a situation where it's beyond your capabilities . carter |
Re: Steve's "I'm not aging quietly" log
Thanks, Carter. I'm doing OK, I've got a strong core, but it's time I really pushed and developed everything else. My mechanics truly suck (except for the stuff I learned at the L-1 - - those are improving).

Hey Stephen!
Thanks for commenting in my testimonial... I know it may seem a bit daunting (achieving your 3 minute Fran) But I do think everybody has it in them... If it were easy everybody would have it though. And there are probably just as many 58 year old men walking around with 4:30 Fran's as there are 30 year olds w/ 3 minute Fran times...very few... Keep up the good work though. I'm not sure how many times you've done Fran but what I have noticed with the athletes at our affiliate is that the 2nd and 3rd time they do Fran is when they shave the biggest chunks off of their time. See ya around! JD |

Thanks, Carter!
hollow is actually more than the hollow rock exercise. Hollowing is the active engagement of the body's core. Best cue i heard is to squeeze your ribs towards your hips... it'll all become clear to you at the gymnastics cert... if the cert ever came by again, i will definitely go!!!!! that's how good it is!! carter |
