2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

So, Murph again. I can't say I'm excited as it isn't the most entertaining to watch, but it will show who has been putting in the work. If you watched the 2015 documentary Justin J made a very good point. Most athletes will be able to tell you their Fran, Helen, Diane... time to the second whereas a lot know their Murph time to the minute or couple minutes. Plus, they may not be bringing quite the intensity when it comes to workouts like this.

I have a feeling this is going to hurt as much as last year.

Josh Bridges is gonna show "Murph" a good time............that is my prediction. If Briggs can get to the states I cannot see anyone touching her.

Agreed on both accounts.

This announcement got me way pumped for the Games! :pepper:

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I remember last year when the games started the masters with a workout that involved 90+ GHD sit ups. Was a rather nasty gut punch to start off workout 1 with.

Murph two times in two years seems like a tough way to start. Guess they loved all of the carnage that comes with that event. Testing to say the least. See how much people go slower this year in order to save themselves? Or are they testing the progress from the people who should have learned to train Murph.

I used to love Murph until I did it non partitioned. No vest doing it straight thru was my slowest time ever.. did I mention no vest..

Guess that the mega rig needs to be used and has 5 pull up stations.

Hope that it involves a twist? Team Murph.. something different please.

Yes agree that Briggs if she shows will murder it again.. Hard to believe that anyone will destroy last years leader.. Karl G.. but I am always amazed.

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

There's a chance some athletes may just sandbag Murph if it is fact scheduled as an individual event (there's some debate that it's really team Murph).

Strategically, it is actually a pretty sound strategy. It's simply a 100-point workout, just like most of the others. If one WOD is going to so adversely affect you such that it makes you perform worse on other events, then there is simply no need to kill yourself on this single workout.

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I thought of that as well. Just like some did on the peg board last year.

Maybe it will be for the teams?

I just watched the 2015 Games video on Netflix, and I thought it was interesting that there were turning points during the week of competition but you don't really know it's a turning point until after. For Murph you could tell it was a turning point for Kara Webb and Annie Thorisdottir, but for the other athletes...?

Flipping the pig was a turning point for Mat Fraser that pushed him into 2nd place, but he didn't know that until the end of the weekend. He said he pulled the pig to his hips, curled it up, and flipped it over. This burned out his biceps, which would later surprise him in the form of failing rope climbs and handstand pushups in the last event. Did he know the pig would cause that? Not until it happened.

I don't think an athlete would completely sandbag Murph, but taking a more moderate approach would make sense.

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

Medium Murph.. I am not sure that a hero workout is supposed to be moderated. I am sure that some will go balls out but some are best to throttle back a bit to survive.

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

looks like Team Murph.. but who really knows?

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I think that Murph is going to give bragging rights within the elit. A 2min Fran or1min grace is not that impressive anymore but a 30min Murph in the heat... Now we're talking.

This is the only way to take CF to the next level and it showed last year.

I don't think competitors or teams will sandbag it, maybe pace it better and not burn out, but no one will sandbag a hero workout as a sign of respect.

I think it time for team murph

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

30 min un partitioned Murph with the vest. I would love to see that one. Breaking 40 min is a feat into its self. Plus the judges are more harsh on the standards than we are finishing 298…299 and 300 air squats with the vest.

Besides Murph.. nothing announced. I think last year at this time we knew more?

Castro put up Team Event 3 & 4 on his Instagram. 21-15-19 Deadlifts and Burpees w/ 100ft handstand walk between rounds.

Hopefully we'll hear more in the next couple days!

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

Individual Event 11: 280 ft. handstand walk for time.

I'm sure their shoulders will be feeling great after 10 previous WODs :)

How fast do you think a top athlete can do 280' on their hands?

Christopher Morris 07-13-2016 01:02 PM

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I hope they do the handstand walk in the soccer stadium. I'd love to see someone go unbroken. If they do it in the tennis stadium with lanes and built in rest, it's not as interesting.

Victor J McQuaide 07-14-2016 09:30 AM

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

280' such random… depending how they do it I would say 70-90 seconds.

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I would be sad if Sam Briggs cannot come for the US.
Such a wonderful athlete, her capacity to perform especially in the longest event is just insane.

The Murph won't probably be such a killer this year, we can be sure the athletes are more prepared for longer events and for heat this year.

But we can be sure at leat a couple of events will surprise everyone and move the rankings a lot.

Brad Gerbrandt 07-18-2016 07:23 AM

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Briggs won't be at the Games this year. It's Monday morning and apparently she is still in the UK.

As for predictions, with the events announced so far: murph, shuttle run, handstand walk, I'm not sure everyone's favourite's on the guys side (Smith, Fraser, Bridges) are going to run away with it. There are plenty of guys that good on their hands and none of them are in the top tier for their all our sprint ability. This will be an interesting weekend. I do realize that a lot is still left TBA. I'm sure there will be a lot of classic CrossFit that hasn't been announced.

Just saw on Instagram that Briggs just made it to the US! Close call. Wouldn't have been the same without her.

Wish they'd announce a few more events...how am I supposed to block my work calendar?! ;)

I just blocked off everything from noon onwards (being on the east coast, I still have the morning to get actual work done). My gym has a teen competing so I'll be obsessively watching. I'll tell the IT department that I'm just warming them up for when the Olympics are on next month.

That's awesome. It was posted to instagram after I made my post here. I guess she left it offline until her feet hit the ground! I wonder how the lack of acclimation will affect her.

I took Friday off so I could watch, but I know I'm not going to get a lot done with Master's and Teen's going on starting tomorrow.

500m swim -- all 80 athletes in one heat!

I think it's going to be pretty cool -- not many opportunities for the guys and gals to go head to head in anything. Obviously they're not scored against one another but I think we'll see some of the guys get smoked by the stronger female swimmers. Top picks for me are Khan Porter and Kara Webb.

The new Murph format will make things interesting. I think we'll see some blazing fast times, and possibly some people really racing on that last run. Hopefully without anyone passing out or wrecking the rest of their weekend. No reason to think BKG and Briggs won't repeat on this one, but who knows.

Clean Pyramid is going to be intense. Regionals had a lot more spacing out between athletes since in a lot of heats not everyone was getting very far. I think we'll see a lot more frantic finishes on the last couple bars in the Games. Gotta got with Webb for the ladies again, Smith or Fraser for the guys. Dark horse is Travis Williams.

Excited to see what else Castro has up his sleeve. Wouldn't be surprised to see another throwback workout from a past Games since it's the 10th year.

You're picking winners for individual events. Here are my picks for overall winner at the end of the weekend:

Webb
Sigmundsdottir
Davidsdottir

Fraser
Bridges
Smith

I've been a fan of Kara Webb, hoping she'll win the games since the year she had to withdraw when she was at the top of the leaderboard. The Icelandic women are unbelievable too.

Josh Bridges has been crazy serious about his training this year. He will do well, no doubt. I wonder how much these 2nd place finishes have pushed Mat Fraser for this year's training.

Re: 2016 Games Banter...starting off with Murph

I think we'll see some rookies do well in the swim.

Bridges and Briggs for Murph. Depending on the weather, we may see some sandbagging.

I'm not sure if Dave was just trying to scare them last night. Looking back at events like Pendleton, Murph last year, sandbag sprint in 09, double banger... there's not a lot left to really surprise them with. I hope it's not just a tonne of volume. Perhaps there will be a surprise, middle of the night event??? Maybe one that really pits athlete against athlete?

I was kind of hoping to wake up to something like having happened in the night. I suppose there is still a week left for it to happen. Ha ha.

The athletes are flying somewhere for their first event. I predict somewhere in California, or somewhere in the western US that is higher elevation.

I think they're going to Aromas to the original Games location to repeat the hill run workout.

I'm weirdly excited to see where they're going, and for what today.

Also, the way Castro said 'there will be some things that will scare you' (or whatever his exact quote was), in combination with the GLOCK prize makes me think there will be a shooting event of some kind this year. That's possibly where they're going today. 5.11 tactical pants? It kind of adds up.

They're boarding a flight to San Jose. Either one of our guesses could still be right.

You might be right! :yikes:

Except... why fly? Couldn't they find a shooting range within driving distance to accommodate an event?

My only guess is logistics. Finding a range to accommodate what they're trying to do might have been difficult, and may require a plane ride.
