No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

As evidenced by the “No Sugars/No Grains” challenges on the competitions thread, many people have found a little bit of support and accountability to go a long way in helping them to live a healthier lifestyle.

Paleo, Hunter-Gatherer, Caveman, Stoneage, Neanderthin….call it what you like. I refer to my diet as paleo, but mostly think of it as “This works for me!”

Diet, as defined by Webster’s, 1: Food and drink regularly provided or consumed, 2: habitual nourishment, 3: the kind and amount of food prescribed for a person or animal for a special reason 4: A regimen of eating and drinking sparingly to reduce one’s weight.

I don’t think the general public, or even myself a couple years ago, would ever think of the first 3 definitions given. But, I believe that most of us are aiming for all 4! It is for this reason we make such a focus on the way we eat and believe in it so much.

No sugars/no grains can be difficult. Society, family, work, friends….all put pressures on us in various forms that affect our chosen diets. We even put pressures on ourselves.

So here it is – the No Sugar/No Grains 2009 support group! Unless someone can come up with a catchier thread name…….introduce yourself, the extent to what you take your diet, the problems you face. Check in often to offer up or ask for support and ideas.

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

I started Paleo in August 2008. Grains, although somewhat difficult for me to initially give up, were a non-issue after realizing how much better my body/mind felt/functioned on a regular basis without them. Now, the ingestion of most grains will make me feel like doo-doo almost immediately (and put me to sleep at my desk!). I also do not consume dairy on a regular basis, but love good cheeses for special occasions (ok, and ice cream). My biggest personal issue is sweets, especially chocolate and ice cream. I don’t necessarily want to stop eating these things, but would like to be able to have more control over the amount I ingest when I do eat them. I’d also like to change some of my negative thinking towards food; i.e. terminology such as “Cheat Days.” I’m going to stop using that phrase.

Looking forward to meeting you all! Happy New Years from Baghdad! Best of wishes to you and yours, whatever your hopes, dreams and Crossfit goals may be.

12/31/08 10:00 p.m. 3 little kids watching a movie, 1 older daughter @ her freinds house & my wife finally getting some down time after family decided to go to bed early on New Years.

Amber, what are you working on? No Grains/No Sugars or Paleo? same "rules" as last month or full Paleo? Not important but just curious:)

I'm in more than ever. 1/1/09

It is like CRACK. need to really leave it behind me. 1 week of eating like this & I can see a difference in mirror. But my "crack" addiction keeps winning, until now.

the first week will be hard but next month when I do a "cheat"(birthday ect.) the hard part will be taking JUST 1 serving & quiting right there untill 3-4 weeks later when something else comes up.

anyway, if I go strong (not perfect but really good) for 6+ months I can maybe get away from this crazy eating I've been doing for a few years.

I felt awesome right before Turkey day (lean & energized)

hope to be back there in 2-3 wks.

Happy New Year!!:pepper:

My name is Tim....and I'm addicted to grans and sugar. All together now, "Hi, Tim!"

I am starting this year by trying to cut out the grains and sugars. I will be starting my own log, because I figure the best way to do this is to be accountable to the masses. I had three eggs (actually egg beaters because I'm trying to use the last bit up) cooked with olive oil, with some Basil and tomatoes thrown in, and three pieces of bacon with a large glass of milk. I will eat some yogurt and almonds here in about a half hour.

Does the sugar-free cookies made with Splenda count?

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

I think I'd rather do Murph daily for 6 months than give up my sugar/grains. But I am ready for a change, and my gains in Crossfit will suffer if I don't adjust my diet. Soooooo....I'm in. I'm going to try the Paleo w/3 cheat meals a week. Hopefully that'll keep me motivated and on track. I thought about suffering in silence, but I think the accountability of the board will be helpful and encouraging. I want to be in the best shape of my life by the end of 2009!

Hi Tim! my name is Ted and i am also an addict.

amber i am glad you started this thread! i did really well on the first grain/sugar challenge, but the last one got the best of me. I could blame it on the holidays, but i don't believe in excuses. so i am ready to refocus and get back on track. i am getting ready for a tri in 6 weeks and i know that i need to have the proper fuel in my body for the intense training.

Hi all!
I am so addicted to sugar. I am ready to clean up my diet and keep on track through this awesome support thread. My diet is pretty clean except on the weekends. Then I loose all control which just cancels out all the hard work I did during the week.
I am so glad I found the boards with all the support to keep me on track. I am excited to see results. Also, if I cheat, my BFF and trainer, Melissa Byers will kick my butt!!
So, I am going to do the no sugars/no grains for 30 days starting 01/02/09 and hopefully this will be the start to a better diet/lifestyle.
Good luck to all!

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

Hey everyone!! Happy New Year!! :D

I started following Paleo on October 26th, 2008 thanks to CrossFit Tribe's Paleo Potluck that totally got me hooked! I have had many cheat days.. Then I did Zone for 2 weeks and decided a vigorous restriction on my caloric intake wasn't helping me (5' tall / 115 lbs / work out at the least 3x/week / Pescetarian!). Ever since I stopped Zone (2 weeks ago) I feel like I've had a free-for-all eating spree! It's crazy. I want to stop! I love the way I feel without grains and sugars weighing me down.
Stopping processed food intake and grains I immediately lost like 5 lbs of weight and my body definitely has redefined (whatever fat I lost I've DEFINITELY gained in muscle -- WOO!).
Lately I've been skimping on the diet though. I love chocolate. Love it. I will never deny it to myself. However. Dark chocolate is so much better than milk. BUT -- milk is so available to me right now... so I just eat that. Or salted cashews which are more available than raw. NO NO. I want to be back to my raw foods, organics, simple ways! I'm not saying I was chowing down on a hoagie or a belgium waffle (no matter how tempting that is) but I was settling for whatever was convenient. (Raw sugar at Starbucks, Soymilk, milk chocolate, salted nuts, etc.)
So one of my many New Years Resolutions is to eat strictly Paleo to redefine the way eat and back to the way I was eating not even 3 weeks ago. I just feel better when I do that. Not going to say that I wont get a cheat day (Fridays for me!) or treat myself to my classic Chai with raw sugar and soy on occasion... but... you all know what I mean hah.

So today! I've started strong. (ALSO I REALLY WANT TO SLEEP A LOT MORE!!) with a brunch, I guess (hah I was babysitting till 4am!! AHH!) with 2 tspn EVOO, 2 eggs, a pear and a few frozen blackberries. My goal is to not measure my life away but to make sure my fat and protein intake in each meal is more than that of the carbs. Doing Zone for 2 weeks really helped me understand what I can and cannot do to my body.

Wow, I'm getting carried away! I LOVE THIS THREAD! Happy New Year, everyone :)

Make 2009 the best year EVER! :pepper:

I'm in on the no sugar part. I'm not going totally renegade and eliminate all grains, but I will cut out all gluten only because I suspect that it is the source of some stomach pains I've been having after eating them. Weird, because I'v eaten oatmeal nearly every day for at least 3 years, but lately I've been getting a sharp pain in the stomach after eating oats/WW bread.

Rice and potatoes stay, PWO of course.

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

Hello, hello, hello and :welcome: to all!

John - I'm working on paleo with intuitive eating (allowing myself true cravings and not ignoring my hunger). So, in line with my intuitive eating, there are no more "rules" per se for me. Just trying to change my mind-set towards food - i.e. if I see a piece of bread, I'm not going to tell myself, "I can't have that because it's not paleo." Instead, it's "Bread makes me feel icky and when I feel icky I don't work out and try to start fights with BF."

Of course, breads aren't my problem. So it's more like if I go in the breakroom and someone just filled up the candy box - I know I'm not going to eat the Starbursts/Laffy Taffy type candies and the majority of the chocolates are out also simply because they won't satisfy me as I really don't enjoy them. But if there is dark chocolate in there, I'm going to savor a couple pieces.

Today, I received a care package from my BFF of 26 years and in it was a large container of delicious homemade holiday treats, recipes that have been in her family forever! You can bet I'm going to enjoy them, but will also try (really, I will try, but they are so good) to share at least half the container. I balanced the first few I ate with a large amount of chicken wings, some ribs and working on the green beans right now.

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

Hi! I'm so in for a No Grains/No Sugars support group! I started eating paleo zone back in October and the crazy progress I saw with how my body changed and in improvement in my metcons was amazing. I admit to having some issues with strength stuff during my strict zone days, but now that I'm doing a modified zone (11p 10c 28f) my strength seems to be much better. The holidays were rough for me eating and I can't say how happy I am that they are over! I wasn't horrible with my eating, but I like Christmas cookies, so I did have them (not in excess, but still). Like others have mentioned, I feel like crap almost immediately after eating grains and sugars, and really just like the way I feel when cutting those out of my diet.

I do make some small exceptions to the paleo part of my diet and that usually falls during breakfast where I add some milk to my coffee (recently switched to coconut milk, which also helps with my fat intake in the morning), and I will eat sheep's milk yogurt with berries if I haven't planned my breakfast enough in advance. Thankfully I've been making frittatas and some other yummy things for breakfast so I haven't had the yogurt in about a month.

That's the extent of my diet. Starting today, I went to just paleo to kind of 'reboot' my eating before I go back to work on Monday. Once I go food shopping this weekend and plan my meals for the week, I'll be back to my modified zone.

So Amber, thanks for making this thread! I'll definitely be stopping by frequently.

If anyone has any recipes that they love, please share! I'm always looking for new recipes!

Hi my name is John & I'm an addict, :pepper:
welcome Tim

sugar, artificial sweeteners, Habbitually grabbing diet sodas, eating some of my kids' food or snacks while makeing it for them, eating late, you name it.

so I will get some rules layed out for myself soon. I'm thinking about going hard-core Paleo when I'm in controll.
1. M-F all day until dinner starts & right back after 1 platefull. (75% +- will be Paleo dinner)
2. weekends will try to be Paleo 4-5 of 6 meals.
3. also going to stay away from constant stacking (even if it is almonds)
4. I love peanuts & peanut butter so I'm going Paleo & stopping peanuts.
5. Going to try 0 all sugar 100%. going to see how it goes w/ my wife who enjoys eating icecream as a family 3 or 4 times a month.(I might have to not be OCD & take a few bites) but I will let you know for sure.:kicking0:

That's enough for now, will check in soon.

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

Hi, my name is Emily and I'm an addict.

My diet has been getting back into shape slowly, but I'm going to make a concerted effort to try to kick this addiction. My weakness is in the salty and starchy stuff. I'm going to be pretty strict on no sugar no grains for the next three weeks. Then I'm going to start targeting Zone aggressively.

I have noticed that after having a cleaner diet, my digestive tract really doesn't tolerate cheating well. I had 2 slices of pizza for lunch today (horrible cheat, but I wasn't home and it was the only food available) and paid for it for the rest of the day. I had enchiladas (egg substitute crepes instead of tortillas) and a salad for dinner and am feeling a ton better.

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

Hi, my name is Lisa and I'm an addict!

I started trying to do the zone diet on 12/28, but slipped last night during the new years celebrations. After reading all the posts in the forums, I think I am going to try and make it a paleo/zone more than just strict zone. I do eat dairy as part of my diet, but I can probably cut out most of it.

I am definitely still craving carbs like crazy and feel pretty hungry most of the time. My biggest weakness is cereal. I love a giant bowl (or two) of cereal after my morning workouts... I also love it any other time of the day. It's usually Kashi Go Lean (the high protein/fiber) with skim or 2% milk. I am wondering if I continue to have the cereal right after my mornings workouts with soy or rice milk, then keep my diet strict zone/paleo the rest of the time, if I will still reap the benefits of paleo/zone? Does anyone have any thoughts? I think this would make it alot easier for me to stick with, but I dont want to completely defeat the purpose of these diets.

I am 28/f/5'4''/135 approx 20% BF. My goal is to get down to approx 16% BF. I usually do CF + CFE workouts or running or biking or swimming or spinning, which comes out to about 1.5-2.5 hours of working out six days a week. I sit at a desk the rest of the day. I figure I could use the extra fuel after my work outs, but maybe its better to go completely cold turkey? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried to cut carbs and sugar out of my diet a couple of times and failed miserably. Of course, my motivations this time around are alot different (I want to perform well and feel good as opposed to just being skinny). How long does it usually take for the low energy and carb cravings to go away and the benefits of the diet to kick in?

Also, are soy/rice milk and egg substitute paleo?

Good luck to all of you with your new years challenges!

Thanks for the support.

Try almond milk, I switched and fell in love :)
Also, I really crave a bowl of cereal hah. I had a bowl of granola and pecans with sliced apples and dried cranberries. All I needed was milk and I would've been the happiest girl on earth. Hah
And yeah, Paleo/Zone is wayy cooler. Paleo = way of life :D

Happy New Year! & Good Luck! I'll be keeping check

For me it took about 2 weeks of going strict paleo zone for the tiredness/carb cravings to go away. My first week it was really more me being tired than anything else. Week 2 was when I was really craving carbs (especially cereal!), I broke and had a bowl of cereal after a workout one night, and felt pretty crappy afterward, so that kept me going without the carbs after that. As for my performance, that probably started to pick up for me around the end of week 2/start of week 3 once my body adjusted and the tiredness was gone, and after that, the results that I saw were amazing. Again, this is how it was for me, I'm sure it's different for everyone. Good luck!!!!

Two other questions:

Does paleo restrict the amount of food you eat like zone does? I just starting reading about paleo online but I havent figured that out yet.

Are beans paleo? It seems like people say they eat beans, but I thought they were off limits.

Thanks.

Lisa,

Here is a link that has a great overall explanation of what is paleo "safe" www.nerdheaven.dk/%7Ejevk/paleo_intro.php (wfs). It's from my friend's favorite links and I always find it great for quick reference.

Hope this helps a little:)

Hi, my name is Jill and I'm an addict!

So far this year, I've been good about staying away from the sugar and grain ( a whole two days! woohoo!) and hope to keep it up. I actually started a loose sort of paleo (I can't get rid of the dairy!) about 3 weeks ago. I really haven't noticed any body shape changes, but my crossfit performance went through the roof over the past couple weeks.

The only problem I'm having with paleo is portion control. I know I can really put away a meal, so I try not to rely too much on feeling full. I'm trying to keep zone portions while eating paleo style. Has anyone tried that? Has it worked out well?

Hi peeps, my name is Kerry and I am starting this challenge with my husband and my to good friends. This is the first time I have done this challeng. Before, I ate pretty much Zone but not strict. Over the holidays, I pretty much ate what I wanted, a lot more sugar than usual. So needless to say, my workouts haven't been the greatest and I have been feeling tired.

I dont think this will be too hard. (I hope) With the support of my husband, my good friends and all of you, I know I can do it. I will keep you posted on my progress. :D

Until next time....

Paleo doesn't restrict the amount of food you eat, just eat good whole food. I forget about beans though, partly because I don't care for them.

I can attest to the fact that my BFF Jenn Woods ate no grains or sugars at breakfast this morning. And trust me, resisting the homemade anadama toast is an accomplishment.

Many people choose to eat Zone proportions with Paleo food, so that's an option if you're a Zone-r and working this challenge.

Here I am in all my addicted glory. Day one is today. I'm drinking my coffee with only heavy cream.... can't stand stevia in coffee, it's like I stirred it with a lead spoon or something. B'fast was eggs, cheese and some ham. This begins the new year....

My goals are simple: Lean out! I'm fully aware of the health problems that exist while eating G/S, so that's a no-brainer. But I need to lean out. This first CF year has been great, but I want year #2 to be twice as great. I cheated way to much, and let myself WOD with injuries too often. Time to put on the big boy underwear, suck it up, and get serious.

hello all, long day....switched from night shift to day shift and didnt sleep in between and going on 26 hours now. I've still been eating holiday treats, but ensured that our monthly BBQ consisted of a large amount of meats and veggies......and now we have ribs, chicken, a bacon roll (wfs) and some grilled veggies for the weekend.

Get off work in one hour, thinking I will crash hard once I hit my rack.

Paleo zone is much more fun than regular zone, I think, because a huge plate of broccoli is so much more appealing than a measly 1/4 cup of cooked grains.

ok, ok, ok....I'll say it. Hello, my name is Amber and I am a sugar addict. i especially love to have hot coffee with all my sweets, which makes for an interesting combination of lethargic awakeness.

good night.

I did have one spoonful of my girlfriend's suuuuuper yummy spicy corn today, but other than that I've been good. I didn't even realize it, but there is a pomegranate diet 7-up now. It was quite tasty. The rest of lunch was steak and rosemary feta green beans. Dinner was enchiladas (egg crepes instead of tortillas) and a salad. Breakfast didn't happen, so I might fix a snack later on. Apple and cheese. Nom nom nom...

Looking for lean. My training always suffered the day after eating bad. No question.
basic goals would be
1. lowest BF ever (always been a little chubby) even in H.S.:(
2. fittest ever(running, pull-ups, another LONG run/hike on the John Muir Trail)
3. keeping up w/ my buddy Ryan who raced Ironman as a pro & been to Championships in HI 5-6 times.
4. quiting sugar/grains so I can chow down on all that great Paleo food w/o worries about daily calories.

So my first day went really well. I think the key to staying on track is variety. Variety in the veggies, meat and fruit options. I get bored really fast, so this is my key to keeping on track.
My energy level is pretty low today. Rather than push myself in to a hard workout today, I am going to take these first few days and concentrate on diet. Hopefully on Monday, my energy level will peak and this will all workout.

How is everyone else doing?

Re: No Grains/No Sugars Support Group!!

I'm in. I've made several attempts at a 30 day stretch w/o sugar or grains, but haven't quite made it. Usually give in about Saturday night when a big bowl of ice cream comes calling. I still have managed to stick to paleo about 75% of the time.

As others have said above, I want to lean out, improve performance and, if a six pack somehow appears, that would be ok too.

I'm sick right now, so I'll just focus on my diet for the next few days. Hopefully, I'll be back to WOD's early next week.

I'm with you there. I'm always polishing off the chicken nuggets or the last 1/4 of a PB&J.

Yesterday I gave in to my Chai Tea with 2 raw sugars and a splash of soy and I have realized it tastes better without any sugar in it. I've finally redefined my taste buds, haha

This is officially Day 2 for me. Zero bad stuff yesterday.

Anybody on here NOT kicking beer? I think I remember that on the "OK" list on the other challenges and I can't figure out why. We're also trying to get rid of as much artificial sweetener as we can. But some in the coffee in the morning might be necessary. But we're off all soda (the whole family for a year) so that was the most of my art. sweetener.

I usually try to cut out any drinking, this way on a night where I do kick back and have a few beers, all my friends get really excited that I deemed the occasion so special.

That's how we're approaching this too. I think beer intake (for me anyway) has slowed my body comp progress this last year for sure. It's the only thing I didn't completely get rid of this year. But it's time for a change. My body comp has not changed since the beginning of September. So, it's definitely time to get my @ss in gear.

I have been trying to do this for a while now but with holidays just getting over it was hard to do it than. So far it has been like 3 days and ive had 1 sandwich and thats it for both. I actually feel crappy for eating that plain bread. But luckily, my WOD today is helen and im hoping that should make it not as bad
