There is a guy in my region that made regionals last year, and was one of the bottom athletes in almost every workout, struggling on several movements. My coach/owner smoked him. This year, that guy TORCHED the Open, beating my owner in several workouts, including the more gymnastic ones (where this guy is way more built for strength). It's super suspicious, considering my owner's g/f saw him at a comp a few months ago and his build is unchanged from last year, as far as she could tell. Good on him if he improved, but it's so vast, it seems hard to believe. I will be watching that regional very closely to see how he performs.
There is a guy in my region that has a lot of people scratching their heads for a similar reason, but it's completely legit. His build hasn't changed but his fitness in all areas has skyrocketed in a short time. In addition to improving his physical game, his strategy and mental game have dramatically improved. It will be interesting to see how these guys do!

I know we are talking about the literal top 3 of the elite, but look at Khalipa in the 2013/2014 games. He has always looked relatively the same. Same bodyweight and essentially just like a big blocky dude (for a Crossfitter.). By simply changing up his programming (or adding to it is more like it) and hiring an endurance coach and doing things like 10x800m splits with little rest, his endurance skyrocketed and he placed 2nd to Rich. Again, I know he was already and consistently was a top 5 competitor but the point is, the body doesn't have to change much in order for the fitness to change. The down side of him being elite though is that the changes are subtle. Top end athletes grind for YEARS to increase a lift by 10kgs. This guy you are talking about, while obviously decent enough to make regionals is still in the bracket of "huge improvements can happen in a year".

I'd say most of all improvement is about how dark can you go and how much do you want it mentality anyway. That stuff is NEVER visible from the outside, on paper and very rarely makes any sense. Guys that shouldn't be doing what they do yet they do.

Yes so many huge jumps.. makes you scratch your head. But one could change a bad diet to a world class one and make some huge gains.. Someone could have been injured or not taking it seriously and then get wheelhouse workouts gain so many spaces.. everyone has their own stories.

Also some people are really good at doing one workout hard a week then go to regionals then can't recover fast enough to keep up.

Or they hit a goat..

8 days till they announce the Master Qual workouts. Will be a fun weekend.

For once I was finally right about a workout - DL-BJ-HSPU!

I also thought they would have Jackie, so I was sort of right about that too.

I am glad that there are no WB in the MQ this year.

I am suprised that there is no OHS in the MQ.

These MQ wods are no joke. You've got to be really good to do well at all 4 wods.
