Adrenal Issues & Comeback
Has anyone here dealt with adrenal fatigue-related issues and made a comeback?
I started treatment for it this spring and noticed a drastic and immediate improvement, but it seems like I'm probably looking at a year to start approaching "back to normal" again.
I confess impatience, of course, and would love to hear that it won't take as long as I think it will. I miss metcons but learned the hard way that more than ten minutes a week right now is a stupid thing for me to do.

What is Adrenal Fatigue...and why would it take a year to be "back to normal"

Re: Adrenal Issues & Comeback
I don't really know the scientific explanations. Basically for me, after two years of total under-recovery from some pretty chronic and nearly unrelieved stress, I had nothing left to deal with stress with. I was emotionally breaking down over activities of daily living and not a fun person to be around.

I'm thinking it will take a long time to recover for three reasons: One, because my naturopath thinks it will; two, because this condition was a long time in building up to, so it seems that it may equally take a long time in recovering from; three, because when I test my limits to see what I can do before feeling the stressful effects again, it IS improving with treatment, but very slowly.

Adrenal fatigue is a decrease in the ability of the adrenal glands to carry out their normal functions. The purpose of the adrenal glands is to enable your body to deal with stress. Adrenal fatigue occurs when stress from any source (physical, emotional, mental, environmental, etc.) exceeds, either cumulatively or in intensity, the body's capacity to adjust appropriately to the demands placed upon it by the stress. When this happens, the adrenals become fatigued and are unable to continue responding adequately to further stress.

The most common symptom is, well, fatigue, but there are many other signs and symptoms. It affects many, many people.

Tirzah, best of luck with your recovery.

what is your treatment?

The effects sound like Cushing's Syndrome, although a fit person would not have Cushing's per se.

Re: Adrenal Issues & Comeback
Thanks, Dennis. I knew there were better explanations out there than what I might come up with, and I appreciate you adding one here.

Frank, I've been working with Dr. Garrett Smith from this and the PM board. After discussing diet and keeping a few of the changes I was experimenting with (avoiding gluten was the big one), he started me on an adrenal powder supplement from Leviticus 11 and now I'm moving off that to a couple of other supplements (can't remember which ones right now) to essentially nourish my adrenal glands while they're recovering. No metcons over five or ten minutes, eliminate stress whenever possible, get plenty of sleep and good food. Be smart and don't wipe myself out.

So far it's going pretty well, but more than one ten-minute metcon session in a week will leave me depleted again. So I've got to take it easy in that department, hence I'm doing Starting Strength.

Tirzah, I'm at about the same stage as you, also working with Dr. G. It's been almost a year, although getting mono six months ago was a setback. I feel better than I have in years as long as I sleep enough, eat well and pace myself with training, but it's still too easy to push myself over the edge and I still can't do too much metcon or at full intensity or I'm guaranteed to get sick.
Sorry nothing very helpful here, just wanted to wish you the best with your recovery.

Sorry to hear about the mono, Gittit. That can't help ANYTHING.
