Bad back in need of help.
 
I need some help with my dad. He's 47, a retired cop, over weight, and has huge back problems. He started dieting and he is losing a lot of weight, I'm really proud of him. He's doing great, but I want to know if there are any workouts he can do to build some more muscle. He lost a good amount of fat, but I want to know if there is anything else that would make him more healthy and stronger. But anything that puts a strain on his back is out of the question. He can actually do 30 honest push-ups so thats one exercise he can use. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Is he overweight? What is the cause of his back pain?

I would say just about any bodyweight exercise would be good for him i.e. - air squats, push ups, pull ups, sit ups, lunges, running, swimming, and whatever else you can think of. Once he has built up some muscular strength and hopefully alleviated his back pain you can introduce him to resistance training i.e. - back, front, and overhead squats, deadlifts, presses, weighted pull ups, et al.

He is overweight. He messed up his back really bad on the police force. He actually got 3/4's for it.

How about a scaled version of the CF warmup about 5 days of the week?

When he can work up to doing 3 rounds of 15 pullups, ring dips, air squats, back extensions, sampson stretches he might be ready for some light loading.

Ya, just take it slow. Do the CFWU, other calisthenics, and stretching. See how he progresses and if the pain regresses.

Yeah I'm going to see how his back feels with that thanks a lot.
