Deadlift effect on knees

Hello, I would like to pose a question to the knowledgeable members of the forum about deadlifts, would someone doing exclusively deadlifts in a strength program get the same detrimental effects on his knees that quarter-squats cause? I ask this because in a deadlift the hips never go below the knees and according to SS a squat that doesn't break parallel will hurt the knees.

Thanks in advance.

The problem with quarter squats is that they basically dont provide enough stretch from the hamstrings to counter the stretch from the quads. In a deadlift your in a much greater position of hip flexion then a quarter squat, which provides you with that balancing hamtring stretch, which should make them fine to do exclusively.

THe knees don't stop the weight, the floor does.

Try snatch deadlifts while standing on risers - a super-deep, relatively upright deadlift. Amazing exercise.

Re: Deadlift effect on knees

Any sitting back movement puts additional strain on the hips and removes some tension from the knee; movements involving a deep knee bend, namely front squats and olympic back squats will put stress on the knees unless the trainee performs a full repetition, in which case the stress is shared and primarily absorbed by the butt.

The bottom line is the hips (and the floor) take pressure off the knees during a deadlift.
