Broke her patella.
Did she run into the GHD? I can't imagine how you could break a patella with muscular movement. It would have to be some kind of impact injury. I watched the video, and you don't see her until she's laying on the ground in pain. The moment of injury isn't shown.

While running to the GHD sit-up station she slipped on the arena floor, buckled her knee and split her patella in half. Today she had successful surgery to repair the kneecap and she's well on the road to recovery. Wish her the best!"

For Tighe and the other data geeks.

Every year somebody puts together a spreadsheet cross-comparing the Regionals.
This doesn't seem to coincide with Tighe's findings. I wonder if it's because he appears to be scoring by the old scoring system last year and not the new updated Games style scoring.

I'm going to take Pat Sherwood to task a little here. In the Update Show he did "Pat's Picks" for the top five individual athletes he thought would qualify from each Regional. Let's see how well he did. (Rory McKernan made the picks for the Atlantic Regionals.)

Out of sixty selections, he chose right on 39 qualifying athletes. He was correct on their placement (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) on 10 athletes.

He got all five women right in the South Regionals, just a different order. I think he would have gotten the Central women right as well, but Foucher was injured, and Barden lost her spot on the last clean of the last event, failing several times.

This. It was definitely horrific to see it happen real time. I saw her slip and fall and when she didn't get up right away you knew it had to be bad.

This happened when she was running and fell?

Did her knee hyperextend? Could that fold the kneecap in half? That is a strange injury.

This image shows the before and after x-rays. The first shows two pieces of the patella separating around the condyle of the femur. The second shows wires and pins connecting the two pieces in the proper position.

If her team said it had been bothering her ahead of time (and it looks like she had rock tape on it during the event), there may have been a stress fracture already started that weakened the bone before the injury.

Yes, appears so. I can modify mine pretty quickly to go back to the old way, and quick checking the top 10 or so, I match that. It highlights the priority Games-style puts on finishing near the top. Say you have two guys, A wins an event, B comes in 10th. They have either:

100 vs. 67 (higher better)
1 vs. 10 (lower better)

Under the old way, for B to reclaim that lead, all he has to do is come in 9 places better than A....ANY 9 places: 12 vs 21, 2 vs 11, 24 vs 33, etc... Under Games-scoring, making up that 32 points depends on not just the disparity between A and B's finish, but what those finishes are. That is, as B's finish drops, the gap between him and A needs to widen. An exact swap (B 1, A 10) would work, but if B finishes 12th, e.g., A would need to finish 28th, a 16-place gap, for them to be tied. If A finished 21st - so now each has techincally finished 9 spots ahead of the other in a workout - A is still ahead by 15 points.

I'm not really sure how it happened...

I just saw her slip and fall and then not get up. My wife thinks she had to have landed on her knee cap for it to actually break like that. (she in the medical field)

They said the Games scoring system favors stand-out performances. Interesting to see the numbers played out.

For giggles, I reranked the top 10 men in the Central Regional using last year's Regional scoring system.

40 Panchik
69 Heppner
72 Anderson
86 Urankar
86 Holmberg
97 Fory
98 Keathley
99 Moorad
103 McBride
108 Scholtz

Not much change in overall ranking. Moorad and Keathley swap spots. Scholtz and Dancer switch spots at 10th / 11th place.

Urankar and Holmberg tied on points with either scoring system. The tiebreaker shows they both had a 1st place finish in one event - tied again. The next tiebreaker sees Urankar with a 2nd place finish and Holmberg with a 4th place finish. Tiebreaker goes to Urankar.

When I reviewed the leader board, I found pretty interesting athlete scores from Arlen Castenada.
He ranked 40th, 40th, 40th, 40th, 1st, 38th, and 38th. The event he won was the snatch. He's strong and great at Olympic lifting - not so good at metcons and other CrossFit events. The muscle ups kept him from finishing event 7 faster (failed reps, resting breaks). It looked like his wrist was bothering him on the cleans.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

So here's a thought about the teams regarding the injury aspect. What if teams were allowed to have one alternate male and female athlete available incase someone gets injured? You wouldn't swap them in during that actual event, but they could be used for the remaining events.

I know this would potentially create the issue of teams saying someone is 'injured' just to bring in a fresh pair of legs, but you could also just get around that by allowing one male and female swap over the course of a weekend. You could use the swap due to injury or just general strategy.

Thoughts? I know the injury thing seems to be pretty infrequent, but it's worth considering.

what you could do is simply allow each team to have 8 players that they can use as they see fit regardless of injuries. as long as all teams get the same treatment, its a leveled playing field.

Or if someone is injured and replaced they cannot return to the competition. Would still allow to substitute for fresh legs but the person they replaced would no longer be eligible. I think Snir's idea would be better though.

They could tag out an any point during an event, making everything faster paced. Maybe have a different color for each lane, like a red team and a blue team. We could call it the Fitness League ... or the GRID...

:p

Sorry, that's a silly response, but I thought of the NPGL when I read your comment, and had to go there. I don't know what it is about the way the events are planned, but I find the Regionals and Games a lot more fun to watch than an NPGL event.

I think in past years, alternate athletes were part of teams in case of injury.

Yes, this was at least the second time he's been to regionals and he's competed in the elites category at Granite Games. Word on the street is that he is considering transitioning to team competition because the volume of competing individual is so hard to maintain.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Using the data that Christopher posted earlier I made a quick data visualization if anyone is interested.

On the right side you will see some filters, you can select which division you want to look at, if you want to exclude any regions, and if you want to only look at the performances for those who qualified for the games.

The bar graph up top shows the median overall place by region. I used median because one really good or really bad performance can skew the average too much, this gives you a better idea of where the athletes in the different divisions placed. The color of the bar represents the number of athletes in that division. You can hover over each bar to see the number of athletes and the median finish. A smaller bar here would mean the athletes from that region tended to finish closer to the top, a dark color would mean that more athletes came out of that region.

The line graph in the bottom left shows the trending of median finish by region across the events. The closer to the top the better the finish. At the bottom you will see the color legend, if you click on one of the regions it will highlight that line so you can more easily see how that region performed.

If you go back to the bar graph and click on one of the regions you will see the line graph in the bottom right populate, it is like the other line graph but it will show you the trending of performance by the athlete in the region you selected. Again, being at the top means you finished in a better place. Again, you can click on the athlete in the legend to just show their line.

Hope you guys like this (and that I interpreted the data properly), if you have any suggestions for other ways you would like to see it displayed let me know and depending on what it is I might be able to do that for you.

Explain your graphs to me a little.

I set the dropdown to "(All)." The shortest bar is the West Regional. Does this mean their athletes, on average, out performed other regions? Or does the tallest bar (California) have the best athletes?

On the line graph, you're input is the rank they finished compared to other athletes, right? So the score in the actual event is not used. If someone snatched 225#, then the pound score is not used. Their rank is used, as in 246th place. Right?

Yep shortest bar means the athletes from that region tended to finish higher (or lower, closer to first, let's go with that).

Line graph uses rank, I could have used the score but it would have taken a bit more effort because the data isn't just a number depending on the event.

It could definitely be better if I had the time to really manipulate the data into the best format for analyzing but I thought with rank being in there it could still be something interesting to work at with little alterations needed.

This disqualification seems a little silly to me. I know exactly what it is trying to prevent and I get that completely. I train on my own as does a very good friend of mine, we would love to compete on a team together but it would be over an hour and a half drive for us each way in order to do so. We make use of the same coach who writes our programming and everything but according to the rules we would be forming a super team. Other than paying a membership at a local gym, how on earth would Crossfit ever find out we were not training together throughout the year ? This rule really only has any validity if you have only teams from Crossfit gyms.

In accordance with this rule, creating an “ALL-STAR” Team, or any Team, consisting of Athletes primarily training at different gyms is not acceptable."

Seems pretty straightforward and valid: they want the team to consist of people who train AT THAT BOX. Once you go slack on these requirements, you toe the line into people who will simply assemble athletes from anywhere.

You have to keep training logs and evidence. The team from my gym is at a level where they are pretty careful about this. The recommendation is to keep detailed training logs of where and when they train, and also take dated pics and make social media posts/check ins that clearly show what gym you are in. (For example, take pics that show the mural of you gym logo in the background and post regularly). It's not perfect, but this stuff is part of what they pay attention to.

Crossfit Mayhem sort of skirts this as Rich trains likely 80% with Hobart in his garage. I get that they want to find the fittest gym and all but reality is that people in cities will form super teams as best they can (and yes I know this happens). Training at the gym implies actually training at that gym and not just being a member, which, as I eluded to would be pretty easy to do, you pay your fees, maybe do your sessions there, take some pictures, post them up on FB for everyone to see, and fill out your training log. I mean seriously do they want to see if you follow the gym's program etc ? That is just ridiculous.

And yes, I was solicited this season to be on a team at a local box here. Same rules though, had to start training there January 1 and actually just attend classes, which I really just do not have time for. I like training at home and doing my own thing, I may reconsider at a later date but for this year I knew we actually did not stand a chance of actually qualifying. I guess January 1 seems like a good cutoff, but it most certainly gives people time to rally a team. I know there are some unaffiliated teams that all train at the same gym as well, not sure how they would police that. Most notably would be Opex Red.

I guess for going to the Games they want to keep it on the up and up which is a good thing.

I think the intention is that the entire team trains together at the same time at the same location for 90% of the training sessions. A team could theoretically be disqualified if its members train in the same box but at different times of the day or different sessions.

BTW, the Team Series is the opportunity for superteams to form and compete. Perhaps there may be a section in the Games for these, but it is not likely to happen for a while.

i. At least four (4) training days must be completed at the Team gym if the Athlete trains six (6) or seven (7) days a week.
ii. At least three (3) training days must be completed at the Team gym if the Athlete trains four (4) or five (5) days a week.
Nick Fory had a knee injury during the last event of Regionals. Nothing catastrophic to be seen on the video. He looks a little uncomfortable by the end of the event, but that could have just been fatigue if you didn't know he'd been injured.

He's not doing any squatting until the fall, substituting accessory leg exercises instead.

I wonder if he could have clinched that 5th spot, had he not been uninjured. Improving his time by 9 seconds (admittedly a lot for that event) would have given him enough points to edge out Graham for overall 5th.

Here is the first announcement about the Games:

"The 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games start here ..." —Dave Castro, CrossFit Games Director

Any and all can come to Hermosa Beach for the Wednesday, July 22 event—no ticket is required. Teams and individuals will have an event on the beach Wednesday morning. Only individuals will have an event in the Tennis Stadium Wednesday night. Spectators who hold a general admission ticket can come watch at the StubHub Center that evening.
