Friend of mine just starting, has shoulder issue. We found he can manifest it by:

1. extend arm with palm up in front of you
2. rotate palm toward the inside, then down, then out, then up.

He jumps like a frightened kitten, which leads me to believe there is a nerve impingment.

Any thoughts on the best way to improve this?

Could be as simple as spending some more time warming up shoulders?

Oh yea, the search function is pretty useless.

The following should not be construed as medical advice. See your doctor for that.

You just described the test for either impingement(Neer's test) or supraspinatus(empty can), depending on the level of abduction of the shoulder.

More likely Neer's test: flex shoulder(raise arm in front) all the way up(to 180o flexion).

Empty can requires the arm further out to side. The whole range of the physical exam should be done by someone competent. These are usually Sports Med docs/ortho surgeons.

Impingement is not a nerve, but the tendons and/or bursa being pinched.

What would I do? I'd go see a doctor.

Great sites. Thanks for the info.

We are essentially just twisting the arm as it is extended straight out. I am sure one of these "real" tests would cause the "sharp pain" and be more meaningful, but that's enough "practicing" medicine for me.

Thanks again.
