Hell folk's

When you guy's train do you train for competition, or do you train to defend yourself outside of sporting competition or both?

IMO, I train for the exercise first. I train for self defense then for competition. Having said that, I train for competiton the same way I train for self defense because one should compete at the same level as you would for self defense otherwise why compete, because all that's going to happen is you getting your butt kicked every single time. Again, this is my opinion only.

SBG has some interesting thought on this:

Wasn't BJJ perfected on the streets?

I don't see much point in arguing the differences between street and sport. What's the saying ... ? Methods are many, principles are few. Methods always change, principles never do.

I think that applies here.

Frank DiMeo 03-21-2006 07:21 AM

Jeff, I've trained for both over the years.
What Anthony said about principles is very true.
Application of those principles is what varies.
One thing to keep in mind is the incredibly short time a violent street attack takes.

Its my experience that ring fighters tend to disregard the realities of the street, while reality based martial arts practioners tend to disregard the lessons of the ring.

well said Jeff!

My recent reentry into the martial arts world agrees with Jeff's assessment. I've just started playing around with Krav Maga. Ask me to throw a jab, cross? - no problem; shin kick to the side of the leg? - feels like I'm getting back on a bike; ask me to efficiently pluck an attacker's hand from my throat or punch while NOT retracting the opposing hand (you know, the one that's holding the barrel of a gun AWAY from your body) - I feel COMPLETELY retarded.
