Re: Still need Stadium tickets?

Here are my picks:

1- Matt Fraser
2- Noah Ohlsen
3- Scott Panchik

The intensity of the men leading up to the Games is insane:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu7ZqjIzfvQ (not wfs, language)

Fraser's late night workouts looks a lot like Froning a couple years ago.

1- Kara Webb
2- Camille Leblanc-Bazinet
3- Emily Bridgers

I think Thorisdottir and Briggs recovering from injury won't be on the top of their game like newer athletes still approaching that breaking point.

My picks:
Men:
Fraser
Bailey
Ben Smith

Women:
Bridgers
Thorisdottir
Webb

Masters: Vic McQuade

The 2 most important things to finishing on the podium are being consistent in all workouts, and being able to recover well enough to be at peak performance on day 3. Next, is being able to adapt to the unknown and unknowable with the workouts that are announced with little or no time to prepare.

OK sorry if this is in the wrong place. I'm trying to find out where to buy a day pass for Saturday. The ticket site off the games page only offers a pass for multiple days. I see reference to passes for a single day for $25 but nowhere to buy them. It's probably right under my nose...

Thanks

sounds like the $25 tickets are for the soccer stadium, single day admission, and sold at the StubHub Center box office.
A General Admission wristband is all that's needed to gain access to the Soccer Stadium. Buy your 6-day General Admission wristband online ($50), or stop by the StubHub Center Box Office to purchase a single-day pass ($25).
That is still one of the most entertaining events of the games. Can't wait to see this year's version of it.

Yeah, it is stand-up paddle-boarding? Isn't that a HUGE advantage to anyone whose done it before? I have no doubt it's a physical test, but from what I've heard, if you've never done it before, it's hard as hell to figure out, let alone 2 miles?!?! Yikes.

No, it's not stand up. It's prone, either on your belly or knees and just using your arms to propel yourself. So, there shouldn't be much of an advantage for anyone who's accustomed to being on the water.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Even though it's not stand-up paddleboarding (which I'm bummed about, but I understand why it's not), it's not remotely hard to learn. I just recently did it with a 5 minute "class" and was up and running after about 5 minutes of trying, and I have terrible balance and worse body awareness. The games athletes would do just fine with it.

The video Jayme posted showed the "legend" of the sport saying these athletes may fall off the first time they try to go up on their knees. I think they'll pick it up quick, but losing even 1-3 minutes to somebody who may already know how to do the faster kneeling position could amount to a lot.

Nicholas Wheeler 07-21-2015 07:53 AM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I see no reason why the athletes won't be given the opportunity today to learn the device. This happened in past years with other "new" implements.

Steven Ngo 07-21-2015 08:04 AM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

i have no doubt they'll be able to get the hang of it.

paddleboarding just doesn't seem spectator friendly when watching people trying to learn it during competition; nor is it anything i'd ever want to do as part of a wod. hopefully they do get an opportunity beforehand to try to get a feel for it.

One more hour 'til the teens start up and i find out how weak / out of shape i really am :D

*edit*

as for sandbag carry -- besides heavier weights and different (i'm guessing sturdier) wheelbarrows, is the format pretty much the same as back in 2010? a comment from someone who was there:
Well, let me frame my critique! I thought the sandbag event was really boring to watch... however, it was probably one of the best tests of real world fitness. Spectator wise it was something similar to watching unskilled manual labor for fun.

Who are the swimmers / surfers that will do well at the paddleboard? The Aussies or the California athletes?

Chad McKay
Kara Webb?
Brooke Ence?

Jordan Troyan didn't qualify for the Games this year.

The media gets better every year. The Games website shows with event is live (E1, E2, E3, etc.). Below the feed are icons to show which heats have already run, and links to workout description, lane assignments, and a start button so you can go back and see what you missed.

Kudos to CrossFit media to make it easy to follow.

^^ that really IS cool! sucks that we're gonna lose that, at least for the US viewers, when they switch over to ESPN (and ESPN 2/3) for the main individuals competition.

175lbs lift, 17 yrs old @ 140lbs

(wfs) http://i.imgur.com/wCCUg5y.gif

That particular lift didn't count due to the step back at the end but she did get another successful 175lbs that counted for the win.

(i think i've cleaned 185lbs once in my life :o )

heh, i know. it just looked a little ludicrous when i saw all the black shirts running in. :D

turns out one was for keeping track of the weight attempted / completed and one for judging movement standard.

Swimming events inherently put the black athletes on the back foot, not fair (and no this isn't racist, even they admit they aren't the best swimmers)

Last time swimming was in the Crossfit games, all of the black athletes finished right in the bottom few.

Swimming has been pretty consistent in the games for the last few years, this should not be a surprise to anyone, work your weaknesses.

Great battle at the end of SQT (Men's 45-49) between Craig Eisman and fellow board member Scott Jenkins! Really thought Scott had him there after Eisman was pulled back for a no rep.
