Monday, 11/03/08:

PHYSICAL THERAPY.
Good news this time around. Knee finally seems to be getting stronger. A lot less pain too, I have one last session on Wed, the 5th, when we'll reevaluate the knee and determine what will be the next step, if any.

Warm Up:
Stationary Cycling. 20:00 / L3 / 5.2 mi / 100 RPM / HR to 98

Stretching. (Primarily back, lower extremities). 15:00.

WOD
3 Rounds for Time
800m Row (C2 Rower) Subbed for 800m run - knee not ready for this distance.
50 Back Extensions
50 Sit-ups
Time = 26:17 (Includes trips up/down stairs to/from rower. Also, last set of sit-ups unanchored - - my anchor was being used by someone else!)

Not feeling well after this, so I called it a day...........

Note: My wife' (Cheryll) saw our local orthopedic surgeon today. Turns out her fractured shoulder is a bit worse than we initially thought, but the fracture is still stable, so we'll know better in two weeks, when it is re-evaluated. It turns out it was a spiral fracture of the head of the right humerus, not just a simple break. Hopefully, it will still not require surgery......

I hope to get back to reading everyone's logs again tomorrow, when I feel better. Take care all!

Nice work on Michael, Stephen. That's one of my goats. Subbing in the rowing should make it even slower, but that's still a damn good time. I may have to tackle that soon minus the GHD situps (since 50 of those would not treat me well).

Thanks, Patrick.

I should have mentioned in the log that I did regular sit-ups. I didn't realize they should have been GHD, which would have made the time go up a bit. I really like doing them, though. I seldom get sore any more, but the first few reps make me dizzy and light headed every time to the point where I feel like I'm going to fall off the bench. I think I'm having a bout with positional hypotension and leaning back over for the GHDs doesn't help.

What? Michael is supposed to be GHD situps? Since when? I missed something if that's the case. Usually GHD situps are called out.

Thank you, Anu! Yup, the injuries are the pits. thank you so much for your well-wishes. Cheryll is fairing the worst, unfortunately. Luckily, she is very left-handed and she busted her R/shoulder, so we both are happy on that count.

Thank you, Carla. I guess the key for me is to foam roll the living daylights out of the knee/quads/and IT band/hip on the right leg. Plus, all the squat stuff they had me doing at CF Redding didn't hurt either!

Any idea what could be causing yours so much grief? Is there a really good sports orthopedist you could go see (who would respect your wishes regarding any treatment)? Anyway, I hope it heals by itself too. Take care!

I think I hurt it while doing broad jumps and duck walks a few weeks ago... Then the trail running pushed it over the edge. I have someone I can see that I trust. I think I will give it another week though since it's only been a week since I stopped the running. Thanks!!

No, it doesn't call out GHDs. That just seems the natural way to do it, since you'd be doing backX on the GHD anyways - just flip over and hit it. Unfortunately, the 75 GHD situps I did for a half-Michael destroyed me so much that I've avoided th is workout, forgetting that the GHD was my own bad idea (inspired by folks on the comment page who do better with the GHD than I). I put it back on my list of metcons to hit, but I won't be using the GHD.

A rowing Micheal. Brutal. My core hurts just thinking about doing that.

Rest up and get better. I recently made the mistake of training while sick, and I ended up being out of it for two weeks. Rest hard, recover harder. You'll be back soon enough.

That's good to know, Patrick. I like the GHDs - - except for the initial dizziness I get when I start doing them. They feel really powerful........'til I get tired! I do a lot better just doing regular situps.

I have discovered I really like rowing. Not only are my knees happy, it's something I can do and not really suck at in my CF "infancy."

I'm feeling quite a bit better today, thanks Justin! Took it very easy today and will probably take tomorrow as a rest day, since my WO week is all screwed up.

PHYSICAL TYRANNY (THERAPY) - - Last Visit.......Yea!!!!!

PT went very well. The tech was very pleased at my progress, though I'm still going to experience some lingering problems. She advises me I'll have to continue to work on the adhesions and scar tissue which have formed in my quads and loosen the tight IT band. Additionally, it will take a while longer until my right side hip flexors catch up to my left. All in all, good news and an increase probability I'll be able to avoid surgery!!

Workout: Still not feeling 100%, so I abandoned the idea of doing today's Main Site WOD, which would have trashed me for sure.

Warm-up / Cardio (notta metcon)
Versa Climber: 20:00. 72 steps/min / 10-12 inch steps / HR to 132-134.

Core Work:
GHD Sit-ups 10 X 3
Back Extensions 10 X 3

Strength Work (easy day):

GTG pull-ups
OH grip: 3, 1.
UH grip: 3, 2, 2.
Total = 11 DHPU. (Really tired at this point - - lots of "fails" in the mix).

Bench Dips:
10 X 3. (Was careful with R/shoulder - - still minor pain. Hope I haven't done anything to my rotator cuff).

Don't go too hard on the GHD sit-ups! They can be a real killer! Try working up slowly on them like you are on the pull-ups and you'll get it.

Great job!

Awesome!

Two things:

1)For the IT band - A foam roller is your best friend. It'll HURT so good.

2) For the hip flexor imbalance - single-leg bridges, focus on activating your glutes.

Aw. My tribe members do me proud.

CONGRATS on doing so well with PT, Steve. That's hard work and can challenge even the most patient of us.

I'd recommend including a good amount of single leg work in your programming every now and then (it's the one thing I wish Crossfit Programming had MORE of)- you can sub in split squats, lunges, single leg romanian deadlifts, step ups, and single leg squats for a lot of "leg stuff" and this generally helps with imbalances and increasing mobility. Heavy Single Leg Work days can always be a good sub on days that you might work a skill like the clean or snatch with PVC and want something to give you a little more bang for your buck.

You are so right! I cannot wait to drop under 200#. If I could make it to 180, I'd be happy. BMI calls for me (at my height) to max out at 170, with the Dr. recommending as low as 155. Doing CF and adding the muscle as it appears I am, I think 180 - 185 is more realistic.

Thanks again for all the encouragement!

Hey, Steve - I posted in Justin's log thinking I was posting in yours - but I don't think you actually tore anything did you? You didn't hear anything pop, yes? Because torn hamstrings are TERRIBLY painful (I've been there when it's happened and it is sooooooo scary).

Thanks, Erin. Just saw your post there and replied. I didn't hear the pop, but I sure felt it. Know what it was, because I had it happen about 8 years ago to my right leg (running). That one was a L2 tear - - didn't run again for nearly a year! The pits with that one was I had done a lot of strength work for my poor running........was doing a sprint probably faster than I'd ever done, and felt really good, so I "put it into overdrive." Big mistake - - never, ever change your stride and "power up" in a hard run. I learned the hard way!

I'm not in a lot of pain. I was REALLY lucky, I think. Awaiting your info! Thanks so much, Erin. I'll let you know how it goes.....

Hi Patrick!

Thanks for the well-wishes and encouragement! Followed some of Rip's advice http://************.net/forum/showthread.php?t=700 (w/f/s) today and hit basically only cardio stuff, but it mildly stressed the hamstrings, then I stretched with basically full mobility after getting the kinks out. Looks as though this thing will heal very quickly if I mind my "Ps and Qs."

Gotta wait until next month or so to buy the rings. Spent more than my share on stuff this month (DMax ball, BOSU, jump rope, etc.). Slowly building up an arsenal........:D

Hi Lee Ann,

So glad to hear you're back and at it! Thanks for your concerns and thoughts for a speedy recovery. Things went very well at the globo today - - just concentrated on rehab-friendly stuff (basically, cardio); Hammy feels fantastic. If things go this well (and I don't do anything stupid, I see myself being back to full strength in 4 to 6 weeks, perhaps less, per Rip.......

Thanks too for all your encouragement too! It really helps. Besides, can't keep an old goat down!!

10 X 5 Back Extensions

R.I.C.E. and copious stretching at home.
Good Mornings w/ no weight and w/ PVC pole.
10 X 2 and 10 X 1.

This was a very good day. Both R/knee and L/hamstring felt great, stable, and strong. Minimal discomfort during exercise with hamstring. Little or no pain. Will continue with rehab WOs which place normal, anatomical function and stresses on the hamstring, with attention given to slow addition of incremental weight-imposed stress over the course of the next 4 to 6 weeks. According to Coach Rip, this is the most sensible way to rehab a muscle-strain related injury, especially if the injury is not severe and the rehab exercise is well-tolerated (refer http://************.net/forum/showthread.php?t=700) - - w/f/s.

Wow Steve, sorry to hear about the hamstring. You just can't catch a break! At least you're trying which is more than i can say for most (non-crossfit) people.

That's rough man. I'd let you borrow one of my hamstring for a bit if I could.

Thanks, Helen. Well.........I guess getting older is kinda the pits, but at least I'm getting healthy while I'm busting things (LOL!!). The tear appears to be minor, so it should heal quickly. Thanks so much for the encouragement!

Hey thanks, Chuck! I know you would too! Looks like I got off lucky. I can tell it's already better and it's only been two days. Following Rip's muscle injury rehab program and going to take it very easy throughout the process. With luck, I could be back up to snuff in a month!

REST DAY.

Left hamstring feels really good. It's not too tight, but have been GTG stretching it all day and massaging it to promote good blood flow through the injury.

Keep it loose and don't push it too soon. But you know that! ;)
