I came up with a WOD/challenge on my own yesterday. It was damn hard.
4 rounds of 200 yard swim, 50 squats, 40 situps, 30 pushups, for time. Took me slightly under half an hour. Any takers? Anything around 20 minutes would be phenomenal IMO.

I might give it a try, I'm sure I'll get some stares at the Y.

Good luck. The funny looks just make the experience that much more enjoyable.

This type of workout isn't all that unusual depending on what circles you run in...although you're right, at most pools you will get strange looks.

Welcome to CrossFit. With that username, it seems like you bring a useful perspective from the sport of "football in the water". Not too many serious swimmers here, but those that are, are maniacs.

Would water polo players do this kind of workout? I'd try it, but I'd lose my lane for sure while doing the the pushups . . .

Matt Gagliardi 05-07-2004 09:12 AM

Well...polo players among others. It would depend a great deal on the coach and strength coach. A more conventional-minded coach probably wouldn't do it...but someone willing to push the bounds a little bit would. It's the kind of thing that you'd do during the swimming portion of practice, definitely not during the drills/scrimmage part. Although whenever I'd throw a bad pass my coach would make me hit the deck and do pushups.

Losing the lane...that can happen. If someone jumps in my lane when I'm on the deck, I just get right back in when I'm done on dry land and start swimming again. Pretty soon people realize that you're getting in and out and they leave you the lane if they see you at one end. It's either that or they stay in the lane and deal with the wake ;)

David Wood 05-07-2004 10:03 AM

I just *wish* I could leave a wake!

Matt Gagliardi 05-07-2004 11:52 AM

Well...Memphis is a new place for me (relatively), and I haven't run into too many good swimmers here. I pretty much "own" the pool where I work out...the people there know (and avoid) me, and the very few times that anyone has asked to share my lane I've always agreed, but every one of them has bailed out after less than 5 minutes. They all say I'm too fast to share a lane with.

Keep at it'll start generating that wake in no time.
