What about ab mats and plates for the HSPU? I know that your head must pass below your palms if you use an ab mat and plates, but haven't tested it yet. What bumper plate does that equal out to? 25lbs? 35lbs? 45lbs?

Usually 45s will do the trick, just make sure you test it out before the workout. |

Our athletes used 2. Didn't say otherwise in the standards and in an 8 minute workout, it wouldn't be right to spend 1/2 of it changing out plates.

Any issues with deadlifting then hang-cleaning the weight? I don't think there is, but wanted to check that general consensus.

As long as the weight starts on the floor it doesn't matter. |

No racks. It says it in the workout description, just below the picture showing the OH finish position: "At the top, the elbow, shoulder, hips and knees are fully extended, and the bar finishes directly over the body with the feet in line. Using a rack is not permitted." |

Um, no. This workout requires the clean to start from the floor, which means that if you deadlift then do a hang clean you haver failed to meet the standard since a clean is one fluid lift and a deadlift plus hang clean is two lifts. It's ok to muscle, power, or split clean but not hang clean. When hang clean is acceptable, it's stated as such. |

Can you please point-out where it is stated that it must be "one fluid lift"? If that's part of the standard, or if there is anywhere that they specifically mention "no hang cleans", then I missed it. Just because you're interpreting it that way doesn't make it true unless specified. |

The standard: A muscle clean, power clean, squat clean or split clean may be used, as long as the barbell comes up to the shoulders, with the hips and knees fully extended with the feet in line and the elbows in front of the bar. No mention of one fluid lift! |

It doesn't matter what online judges say. There are tons of videos where people are using the wrong weights, doing the incorrect pull-up for their age group, etc and they have multiple thumbs down, but their scores are still counted. |

I am not sure arguing is the right word, but I guess I am sensitive given that I am a highly experienced judge with experience programming competitions, serving as judging director, judging the Open multiple years as well numerous competitions, and judging many competitions with everything from first time competitors to elite athletes. There is a circle of people who pay a lot of attention to this stuff, and I'm one of them. As to what is happening with thumbs down on online judging, the way I understand that is that games staff review things with sufficient thumbs down and then make adjustments. Seems like it can take some time for them t get to it though. I tend to judge in person a lot more than online though. D |

How one cleans it doesn't matter as long as they clean it and every rep starts from the floor. Had they been more specific it would have been great but they didn't. At any comp I've judged or helped lead judge we always demonstrate and show what is and isn't allowed. We are very specific. Here they weren't which allows for any variation of a clean provided it starts each rep from the floor. I don't spend time online judging. The first year we had that option I quickly realized how much of a pain it was and decided I would rather skip that and spend time with my family. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
As you said before, by definition, a clean is from the floor to front rack in one smooth motion. So if you do a deadlift and then a hang clean, that would not be a clean, and would be illegal in weightlifting.
However, I have no idea what the official crossfit hq rules are so it's a moot point until they specify |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Here is my guess for 15.5
1. There will be pistols at the beginning of the RXed WOD 2. There will be an ascending thruster latter 3. It will be a chipper... For time (with time cap) Here is my best guess 15.5 For time (25min cap) 10 pistols each leg (can alternate) 50 thrusters 75lbs 20 box jumps 30" (no step ups allowed) 40 thrusters 95lbs 30 swings 2pood/70lb/36kg KB 30 thrusters 135lbs 40 burpees to 6" target 20 thrusters 155lbs 50 cal row 10 thrusters 185lbs Each rep not completed adds 1 second to the score Scaled (25 min cap) 20 step ups onto box 50 thrusters 45lbs 20 box jumps 24" (step ups allowed) 40 thrusters 75lbs 30 swings 35lbs/1pood/16kg kb 30 thrusters 95 lbs 40 standard burpees 20 thrusters 95lbs row 50 calories 10 thrusters 95lbs Each rep not completed adds 1 second to the score |

Typically, HQ (and other major competitions that largely model off HQs stuff) will state when non standard versions of stuff ARE allowed more than stating every weird variation that isn't. *shrug* Like a couple of people have said, a deadlift to a hang clean is a pretty dumb way to do 15.4 anyway so I guess it's mostly moot. |

After Josh Bridges lost the 15.4 announcement workout, I hoped to see him overcome his struggles with the new HSPU standards.
First he posted a video on Instagram of HSPU practice, nailing each rep to standard with the help of a mirror: https://instagram.com/p/0eLd9UHcQY/ (wfs) Today he posted a new score of 167, a 45 rep improvement over his first score. Way to go, Josh! |

Rich still second, this will be a furious 15.4.

burpees
thrusters box jumps movements we've seen in EVERY past Open - but not yet in 2015. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
If Rich and Jason both finish in the top 5 worldwide and do the team competition, does that lessen the main event? I mean, if Fraser finishes first in the Open and then wins the Games, then that is fine by me. But when 2 of the top 5 in the world aren't competing individually I think it makes a huge difference. Any thoughts?

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I think that DC has to test all of the movements just like before.
Leaves Box jumps, Thrusters, burpees of some kind, Rowing and maybe pistols. I hope that the thrusters are super heavy, box jumps are high, burpees are long, rowing is medium and many pistols... But I have learned that I know nothing of what DC says on Thursdays. Will be fun to do and watch. Just need to close the show. Cheers Vic |
