Warning the following post contains ranting and may not make a lot of sense.

*Begin Rant*

As a lot of you would know, I work in a very wussy "health club" (only temporary until CF Sydney opens up)

Anyway i knew that the other trainers weren't gold medal material but i didn't realise how bad they were until one went on holidays and i had to train one of her clients.

This client had been training with this other trainer for at least 6 months, twice a week.

I got warned to stick to the "program" that was left by the other trainer which consisted of a very few dumbell exercises and mostly machines for 2 x 20 reps.

Anyway making the best i could of the restrictions imposed by management I thought i couldn't go far wrong with some light dumbell squats, shoulder press and pushups.

Oh how wrong I was!

50 PT sessions down and the client couldn't squat properly even with a total load of less than 10kg. Feet turned out like a duck, knees bowing in, no depth. Even after 2 remedial sessions she still can't do a single good squat.

Thinking i'd be safer with pushups i got her to do 2 x 10 from the knees. She didn;t even know how to get into a pushup position and when corrected managed 2 before she started doing all sorts of weird stuff with her hips and arms.

I almost cried. To finish things off i did a mini FGB, 4 exercises, 1 minute of each 2 x through. Kept to the basics, medball thruster, step ups, push press, crunches (unable to do situps)

Apparently even at loads below 5kg she was still sore for two days.

I'm ashamed for the PT industry that we let trainers let clients be so bad at such basic stuff.

I'll never call myself a PT again, i'm an S&C Coach!

50 PT sessions??? that's like 25 weeks! What in the world! That is a huge waste, you should convert her to Crossfit and steal her over toe Crossfit Sydney! hehe

As for squat work, did you try goblet squats? What about Big chest/ Buddha Belly squat stretching? When Coach Dan John did a seminar over at Crossfit DC and he went through the teaching the squat, the gobelt squat along with that stretch definitely seemed to help many people squat better in a matter of 15 minutes.

Don, glad you survived the attack of the "bunny" weights. It's pretty sad when you see things like that being more and more common.
I liked your slogan so much I used an adapted version on my website homepage.
What are these people thinking? Maybe, not too much.
I make it a practice to tell my clients that if they don't make progress after a reasonable amount of time, I will not continue to train them; because I'd be wasting their time (and mine). They'd be throwing their money away.

I can attest to experiencing that same example being portrayed and performed daily in all of the Health Clubs now. With of course that there are some exceptions. Management will hire trainers without experience, and no certification *(education of basic anatomy/kinesiology)and give them a special case client that requires to learn how to Squat, Stand, Walk and Reach/press all in his/her daily living.

Many trainers are there just holding their hand, counting and socializing than really training. I am not an elitist, far from it. Every moment I get a chance to learn something I make sure that the knowledge learned is easily transferrable to my clients for their benefit in the long term.

I've only got this client for 4 sessions so my remedial work time is limited and kind of pointless because next week they will be back on the leg press with the other trainer.

Giovanni has got it right. Hand holding socialising and rep counting is about the limit of the PT's at my gym.

Thank goodness i'm off to teach O lifting to school kids today!

Every body these days seem to think that by going through the motions will get them all the benefits without the suffering that comes with it.

At the city gym here we don't have personal trainers. All we do is show people how to use the machines and that's it. Interesting thing is how the rest of the staff have followed my lead on this.

When I show people equipment I only show 4 machines at any time. That way they will retain hopefully what has been shown and do it right. Because I have noticed most trainers in gym's show the client 15 exercises in one session and they client doesn't do them right.

Better to do 4 exercises and get them right before adding more. Plus if they want more they will ask and learn more.

We also have a general policy here of no hand holding.

After watching some PT training her athlete tonight saw another bad behaviour.

She trained the athlete for 75 min. She stopped about half way through and spent almost 10 minutes discussing shoulder injuries. This was with someone who wasn't paying her money, while leaving her athlete hanging.

Man, when I took my courses for PT and coaching to never do that. To explain to the person asking that I'm presently busy with a client, Can I talk with you after we are done? Or at least give them a business card to contact you.

She could have lost her athlete tonight because of this.

Thsi just proves to me that most who get certified as PT today are educated beyond their intelligence.

My 60-yoa mother got another comment tonight from her Pilates teacher that "that training you're doing with Garrett must be making you stronger!" That's after little more than 3 weeks of 3 days a week of *heavily* modified CF workouts! My mom is (almost) upset at me because she's gotten strong enough that the Pilates instructor is moving her on to harder exercises!

I used to be a 'circuit monkey' personal trainer. It didn't fit well then, it sure as heck won't ever fit me again. I couldn't stand the TVs in the gyms, they're like crack for a bored personal trainer!

Watch out for the other trainer getting upset at you if the client switches from the results!

Hi again, just got home from Training two clients. One new client, I have to re-introduce balance, and Core stability with CF involved and my veteran client is doing WOD's and some of my own WOD's that I've cooked for her.

She drinks her KoolAid COLD and loves it!!! She asked me a question:

What do my peers think about CF?

Well, I've had nothing but some bashing just like it's been posted everywhere else and I won't get into it here. The thing that upsets me is that the rest of the trainers listen to those that bash and they take no effort to learn anything new about CF to benefit them at all.

My other clients LOVE CF and they way I've introduced it to them. (Confession: I've been doing this type of workout with them for 3+ years) prior to me finding CF. Man, am I very Happy to have The CF Staff stand behind their product with SOLID results and Solid Backing from the Community.

I'm in GREAT company, Thanks Coach, Trainers, Volunteers and Community.

No matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. The other trainers will never get it. Worse is if they try and copy you without doing their homework.
