Why has this message board gone so quiet?

7 years ago when I first started CrossFit this message board was about 100 times more active. Does anyone have any explanation of why it's gone so quiet on here. The amount of Crossfitters, boxes since 7 years ago has grown so much yet less people are discussing on here.

My only explanation is that 7 years ago most people would workout on there own and getting on here was the only way to speak to others doing CrossFit, whereas nowadays there's so many affiliates that people stick to there own place.

Be interested in everyones view on why they think it's gone so quiet on here.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Basically I think it is the evolution of the internet, crossfit in general and other media's types, boxes having their own pages, forums and so on for their members.

There is so much more out there today than for 7years ago and I believe that is why people leave this forum.

If you think about it there is not allot happening to it, the look and feel is very outdated and just a refreshing of that would make a difference and possibly entice more to be active.

I joined in Jan last year and since then nothing has happened... its a shame because there are some very interesting conversations.

that's my 2 on the subject

I think I would be gutted if this site was revamped too much, the main page workout and format is to me like a classic car, also it reminds me of when I first discovered CrossFit, back them my home computer also took about 20 minutes to load just the page, but nonetheless I would sit there eargerly waiting the daily WOD.

It's hard for a message board to thrive when new users can't register

Having served as a global moderator and admin on several (now defunct) forums, I think it has more to do with the format than anything else. Understand when I say format, I'm not picking on the color scheme and user controls - I mean message board/forums in general.

Right now, video and social media are king. Message boards are my favorite, but I'm kind of old school in that regard.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

I'm with Scott in the sense that I love that it has remained unchanged. Same with the main site. I think a lot of websites upgrade too much and now they all look the same.

As for the lack of activity, I think it has to do with YouTube and Facebook and Twitter being the main avenues for stuff. Also with people wanting to make a name for themselves and doing things on their own sites/blogs. I don't think that's a bad thing, but I also wish they would come back to the Message Board and the Journal to contribute.

I actually wrote an article about that topic and submitted it to the Journal a few days ago. It's a three-month challenge to migrate back to the main site, Journal, and Message board.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Part of the reason it has gone so quiet is that some of the regulars, or high quantity commentators were banned for one reason or another.

Also, a moderator said that an update to the message boards is in the works. However, this comment was over a year ago, so it may not happen soon. It will happen when it will happen.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Fingers crossed they don't ever make this forum defunct, I have a 12,000 page log of my training on here.

Is that true that new users cannot register anymore Luke?

I know people are on Facebook, twitter etc, but I still think there's a place for a forum like this, at least you don't have to be friends of friends with prople to debate something. Admittedly though I don't comment on the normal threads as much as I did in the past, maybe because I feel they don't get as much traffic anymore.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

I hope new users can still register. I think the strength of the forum is that there is some oversight, and you can get booted for not following the rules of the forum. I don't like reading comments on Facebook or other unmoderated sites because people are idiots. This forum has a higher quality than that.

I found the post from a moderator talking about a forum re-boot. She said that the forum project was bogged down because people at HQ were focused on Games organization. She made this comment just before the 2014 Games. So, the project has been bogged down for a while.
The forum has over 59,000 members registered, and about 800 "active." A lot of people sign up and read and lurk, and a lot of people sign up and forget about it.

Particularly as the community has grown, we're not the only game in town. 10K affiliates, as many blogs and facebook pages and etc., and, like the main page www.crossfit.com, we are less of the central place for discussion.

All of that said, there has never been a "mass banning." There are 186 banned users, and half of those are spammers who got banned after one or two posts. And the board isn't down to squash discussion.

The board was shut down in the interim of bringing a new, more fully featured and modern version on line; unfortunately that project has gotten bogged down. After the Games there should be a run at getting that project completed and getting registrations back up and running.
New users have been registered since that announcement, I'm just not sure how. You can verify this by their registering date.

FB has killed off a lot of forums. Especially with CF, PL, WL, StrongMan, Paleo, Zone, etc specific groups on FB besides private FB groups for CF gyms.

It's so easy to have access and update via phone and app updates rather than going through the browser.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Agree, its just an evolution of "internet medias". People moved to FB, IG, etc to get the feeling of more personal, media rich, interactions.

Also people got more lazy, its easier to post a photo or one line then get active on a forum and write long, informative stuff. Forums are more of a "hardcore" these days.

it will change or come around, no worries ;)

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

I think social media plus lots of affiliates is doing in this message board.

Regarding the larger death of message boards I find it a shame. It's the triumph of "easy" over "better". I'm a member of the Starting Strongman Facebook group and it's got good stuff but since a FaceBook page is nearly unsearchable all the great questions and answers quickly become almost unfindable.

This message board has been great because I can go back and see what people have been posting about something going back months or years. I can also look back at my own stuff years back. What did I say my resting heart rate was in 2010? Exactly how much progress did I make when I did Starting Strength? Not only did I get to talk about that then, but I can look it up now.

if you go to the bottom of the forum page you can see the stats are worrying :(

Threads: 86,489, Posts: 1,249,776, Members: 60,768, Active Members: 349

No idea how they calculate the active members but this is under 0.006% which means things have changed and it can been seen clearly.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Message boards in general are pretty much dying and it is due to social media. I personally think it stinks simply because the message boards do allow for a more specific focus and the ability to weed out the b.s.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Now down to 315 active members

A loss of 34 people or 10% since 30 september

At this rate we will be at zero within a year.

Yet people are very active on the main site with the CF WOD

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

The site is extremely active, look at the number of non members on at any one point in time. It's the stop in sign up that's causing the drop in posts. Many reasons they've done this, most of them reasonable. But yes, I loved this board back in the day, and learnt a hell of a lot.

Quick answer : a message board is so 2008 !

Blogs, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram get most of the trafic now.

Sooner or later everyone will use social media as the primary tool to communicate online.

There is still a place for message boards, some subjects need this kind of format, and as an old guy (35 ;-)), I prefer message boards, but you cannot swim against the flow for very long.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

How about the fact there are 12,000+ affiliates? When I found the CrossFit in early 2010 there were 2 small affiliate about 15 miles away, combined they might have had 150 members.

Today there are 7 large gyms in that area plus lots of small/garage gyms. People get information from coaches in those affiliates not the board. Gyms like Outlaw, Invictus, Nor Cal and CFNE are driving the research these days and posting it on their own websites. Often for sale.

Simply put CrossFit grew up. I think what we miss was that great adolescence period. It was exciting, innovative, sometimes stupid (ever done "Manion"). Many of us had finally found what we had been looking for in a fitness program.

It will never go back to what it was. The genie is out of the bottle. While we may miss it, millions of people are better off because of this growing up.

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

It's because they removed the original exercises & demos videos a couple of years ago! I think you're right, the newbs see their own gyms as a reputable source for information and community so they don't come here as often or at all. I myself am also an example of someone who has done that very thing. We have several blogs and community pages in my gym let alone add to that the Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. sometimes it's just too much to keep up with!

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

I'm a little shocked I didn't see this mentioned in this thread - but you guys want content extremely similar to what you are getting here - www.reddit.com/r/crossfit (Proceed at your own risk, *usually WFS* but sometimes not, depending on the time of day/week/month) - it's similar to a message board, mostly self-moderated.

Food for thought, I've posted identical posts both here and there, and MOST of the time, I get about 10 times more responses there than I get here.

Bunches of people already have accounts there, so it's easy to just drop into the CrossFit section and have a chat!

Re: Why has this message board gone so quiet?

Yeah, I checked out the CF sub on Reddit. It's alright, though the reddit format means it will never be as organized like this or any forums with subforums.

It's not as fast or as strong as the old CF forum days but it's a place at least.

Redundancy...

NO one is forwarding the conversation....I come back and ghost every now and again, but it is either to look at my old workout log, or to find some ancient thread that I remember some nugget of wisdom lying in. Those searches are time consuming and BRUTAL...

Some things I simply cannot find, like Coach Sommer's old posts, or even some of Coach's (Coach Glassman)...

I agree. Same with the Journal. You almost gotta remember the title to find the CFJ article of Message Board thread. But still worth the search in my opinion.

Mainsite crossfit.com (wfs) got an update today. I'm hoping the forum gets an update too...

The search function is difficult to find past information.
