Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Beach Murph? They did something like that in 2011.
I'm guessing it will be straight up Murph, or with a weight vest, in the stadium on Wednesday night. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I'm curious to see if they're going to let them break up the middle section any way they want or have a defined scheme the athletes have to follow. Considering how regimented they've been with the numbered mats and "do this number of reps here and then advance to the next section and do that number of reps" etc. so that the crowd can see who's ahead, it seems like it would be a nightmare to try to follow otherwise.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
What about a double Murph? I can definitely see having to wear a vest, possibly an even heavier than the standard 20 lbs. vest?
Beth, I think they'll mandate how they can do the reps, instead of letting them partition however they want...that would be crazy to watch! |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
where was Murph posted? Could not find it on the website.. maybe swimming murph.

Just because Murph is the first *announced* workout does not mean it will be the *first* workout. It might be Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I suppose they could try it on the beach, which I think would be cool - replace the runs with swims of equal (or greater) difficulty. Why I doubt its gonna happen is just the logistics of the rig. Rogue is already putting their massive rig in the stadium. Will they supply a separate rig for the beach Murph, and figure out how to put it on the beach so its stable enough for 80+ athletes at once (the past beach workouts have all been one giant heat)? Or set their rig up on the beach, run Murph in heats, then take the rig down Wednesday night, set it up in the stadium on Thursday so its ready to go Friday? I'm not suggesting either is impossible, just that neither is likely. Also, where does the weight vest come into play? Rx Murph involves a weight vest. Do they put it on after the first swim, and take it off before the second? Just food for thought. |

Just food for thought.
That's the problem. When you start replacing one movement with another it isn't murph anymore. |

2011 Games Event 1 (Beach Murph)
Men Women (both wfs) Behind the scenes (not wfs, language) They ran one heat with all the men, and another heat with all the women. The rep scheme was not broken up. They did all the pull-ups, then moved on to a mat station where they did all the push-up reps to completion, and then stayed on the mat to do all their squat reps to completion. This provided some spectator reference to how far the athletes were progressing through the workout, but not to the level of later years with numbers marked on the ground, and moving station to station. Pretty cool event. Because it's been done this way already, I'm thinking the 2015 Murph will not be at the beach. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I think they will do Murph in the soccer stadium where they have to run up the stairs and up over the berm and down the stairs.

All while carrying an athlete of the opposite sex. Going to be brutal for the woman who gets the 225lb guy.. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I'm sure they will use the soccer stadium with the track, and it will be done as the original workout states. I agree with the other posts, you change ONE SINGLE element and it's not Murph.

Yea for the normal dude (or even "thinks they are badass") at your average Crossfit gym. That is where the problems will come in. A handful of people that are elite at their gym will suddenly get stars in their eyes. They will think "if they can, I can, I mean we do the same Crossfit thing, they have a box, I have a box, etc.". Then they will try it out and something will happen. Not sayin' it can't happen at the games but we are talking about a) elite athletes, among the best in the world and b) something like 1/2 a million dollars on the line...Par for the course in a sense. |

Not to mention, what happens if barbells going flying into a competitor on a miss. |

Yes my first thought was how small the tennis stadium playing field is, and how close quarters even the speed clean ladder was last year. I suppose without the handstand wall set up there they could spread it out a tiny bit more. Maybe they will only have 4 snatches each round rather than the 5 cleans, to give even more space? The last thing the CrossFit brand needs is to have a big accident broadcast on ESPN. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I hear ya. I had the same concerns about athlete injuries and risk to those nearby when the speed snatch ladder was announced.
However, the speed clean ladder raised the same concerns in my mind without major mishap last year. It should be interesting to see if the snatch event can run smoothly and safely. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
It will be interesting to see if they allow dropping the bar behind you or do the silly jump over the bouncing bar thing.
|
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I think the problem with the dropping behind is that it's (relatively) easier to kinda pass right through the "show control" phase and go right to the drop. I stress "relatively." In the grand scheme, I find it surprising that athletes continue to trip over bars. As fast as these events are, they still rarely come down to fractions of seconds. Trying to get over so fast that you're awkwardly hurdling that first big bounce, and risking a faceplant, versus waiting less than a 1-mississippi and easily stepping over the (now settling) bar seems like a no-brainer. I know heat of the moment and everything, but that's part of competing, not letting the moment push you into doing something irresponsible.
|
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
My guess is that they don't want athletes to drop the bar behind them to avoid a Kevin Ogar type injury. Jumping over a bar and tripping is minor compared to that.
I hope they use the dead-bounce competition plates, though. Minimizing the bounce would really help with a speed ladder event. Check out Dan Bailey practicing this event with some high bounce plates: https://www.facebook.com/CrossFitGames/videos/932078753500650/ (wfs) He's really taking his time walking from bar to bar. He has to wait for that high bounce to stop. Also, not a competition - just a practice. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I could kinda agree with that, if there was actual evidence that Ogar's injury was caused by falling back onto the bar. I maintain, and I know read opinions that agreed, that his injury happened DURING the lift, that he fell back because of the injury, even if it took until he fell and hit something for him to feel the pain (or if that pain was worse than his internal injury). Anyways.....my point remains, even with those high bounce plates, all he had to do was wait for the very first bounce to settle, then easily, and slowly, stepped over. With competition plates, the bar would settle even faster, just take a half-breath after dropping, then jump and you'll be fine.
|
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
yes the bouncy plates are dangerous.. unless its reps with dead lift.. love those plates..
|
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Who knows? Maybe they will allow dropping the bar behind. It's a lot different dropping a snatch behind than a clean, and it's even a little different than a dropping a jerk behind.
|
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I thought they said they weren't going to allow dropping behind anymore. Partly because they could injure a judge in a neighboring lane.

are the teens gonna be using the same schedule / events as the individuals? Events page sorta updated with schedule but still only the 3 same tabs (Individuals / Teams / Masters)

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
last year's weights for the individual men's sprint carry was 100lbs / 120lbs / 150lbs
this year the 16-17 year old teens will be doing 100 / 120 / 140. only 50 meters with each but 140lbs seems fairly daunting  |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Wonder what kind of sand bags they will use for 100#, 120# and 140#?
Event #2 wonder if max thruster from the ground or from the rack? SQT- wonder if they are going to do squat snatches or power snatches? Long chipper- 1000 meter run wonder if that is 2 laps of the hill coarse? |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
When SQT was posted on main site in 2010 it was ground to overhead anyhow you liked. Back then I trained at a globo and had to use an EZ Curl bar as the longer bars could not be taken outside.
I'm interested to know what the standard for a sandbag to the shoulder is, whether it's thrown over the shoulder like the D-Ball or cleaned up into the rack position. I'm guessing thrusters are from the rack, otherwise why not call it max Squat Clean Thruster. |
