About 10 days ago, I snapped my head quickly back looking up at the pull up bar. I've had moderate pain since then in my neck. My orthopedic surgeon diagnosed it as a neck strain, and advised me to lay off working out for 12 weeks (!). That sounds excessive to me, and I truly want to get back into the game as fast as I can. At the same time, I don't want to mess up my neck. Anyone else have experience with an injury like this? Any other advice? Thanks.

If you want another opinion I would highly suggest getting a professional second opinion...don't take chances when it comes to your neck. While I think it may be excessive layoff I am not a DR and have no experience with that injury. See another some are very conservative...or he might have a good reason too.

That does sound excessive for a strain injury. Maybe you could get your doc to be a bit more specific as to what muscles/tissues you strained, and recommend some home therapy and/or PT referral to speed up the healing process.
