I have a tainer who is insulin diabetic, we tried a very low-intensity workout... not too good. Any suggestions - or experiences?

Garrett Smith 02-16-2006 04:53 PM

John, could you clarify that post a bit?

Tainer?

Insulin diabetic--type I or II? I'm assuming you mean insulin-dependent?

Jamila Bey 02-16-2006 10:48 PM

Buddy, you've got to be clearer about what you're asking. While totally deferring to Dr. G here, my best friend from high school is a Type 1 diabetic. She's also a Women's Pro Football player and has given me great advice for working out for diabetics...

John Velandra 02-17-2006 02:49 AM

Yeah - rushed day, sorry.

Meant to say "Trainer".

He is an insuline dependent diabetic, still learning about all the ins & outs of it as he was diagnosed in his LATE 30's!! Yep, not T2, I know what you're thinking... The trainer sees the beni's of CrossFit, but is scared of how his body will react to the stress-level. He's always been able to follow a bodybuilding protocol with great results, but scaled cardio to very low-intensity...

My question is how will CrossFit work with a T1 diabetic? What should we be looking at for scalability? BESIDES checking blood sugard before/during/after? Any pointers to help ease his concerns with CrossFit?

Garrett Smith 02-17-2006 06:33 AM

As Jamila knows someone who is a type I and is obviously doing tough athletic pursuits, I would love to defer to her and her friend here, before I comment too much, nothing like someone who has been in the trenches and been successful...

Right now, with his and your concerns, maybe start the workouts more towards the ME side, see how he handles those (he seems to have a history of being OK in that area), slowly and carefully working towards more MC and related workouts.

If he's not off of dairy already, get him completely off. Check 'type I diabetes dairy' on PubMed if you or him need some ammo for that idea.

Feel free to post about your thoughts on it...

What is this person's diet like, to begin with?

John Velandra 02-18-2006 10:24 AM

Bodybuilding clean. Not a lot of junk - heavy vegies & proteins, moderate starches. Pleny of water...

Garrett Smith 02-18-2006 07:22 PM

Are they on fish oils? Any other fatty acid supplements? Grass-fed/wild animal proteins or a lot of protein powders? What does "moderate starches" mean in this particular person's diet?

John Velandra 02-18-2006 07:56 PM

No supps as you mentioned or grass-fed protein sources. Moderate starches would be primarily bfast, pre & post workout. Afterwards, the bulk would be veggies. Starches would be sweet potatoes and low-GI.
