your dad's name found it's way on to my hand for this mornings 'Nasty Girls' WoD.

My wife is one treatment away from finishing her second course of chemo and it's going really well. I think cleaning up her diet and 9+ hours of sleep have helped her a lot this round compared to the last time when she didn't really change her habits.

Not to be blasphemous or anything, but I think of it as a sort of physical prayer/meditation. I can't explain it but I know what I feel, and it feels like prayer.

I am not a religious person. Lightening woud be involved if I set foot in a church but I have great respect for people who talk the talk and walk the walk. My mother in law was religious and the most wonderful person ever. She battled non Hodgkin's lymphoma for 6 years. She lasted one year longer than expected. One of the things that keep her alive I firmly believe is the prayer circle at her church.
Writing a name on your hand is the perfect alternative for people like me. Would I assume it will "work" ? absolutely no doubt in my mind the positive energy will help the sick.

I have dedicated the next few months of my life to train to do a triathlon in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. I know times are tough but if everybody that read this shot me your coffee/fast food/snack money for a couple months (see my fund raising page for an explanation of this) - I'd be successful. I am not doing so well with the fund raising right now but it will work out in the end.
And to the Crossfitters that have given me money many thanks. I don't want one more kid to lose their grandparent too soon like mine did...

And to those of you that are sick or whose loved ones are sick - their/your names are on my hand everytime I work out.

We found out he cancer hasn't spread, the doctor can shrink it and remove it, and he said that he could actually be cured. He had his first treatment last week and is fatigued and dizzy at times, but all things considered, I think he's doing remarkably well. I will take him to his first radiation treatment tomorrow.

I like this idea on several levels, but would like to make a suggestion. How about the requests go on this thread, then everyone who does it PM's the person to let them know? If we are going to commit to this long term--as seems to be the intent in placing this thread in a permanent place of honor--then it will get very long, and finding the names will take a while.

This is really quite similar to the prayer requests made every week at my church. Again, I like it on several levels, and I think it's a useful thing to do regardless of one's metaphysical beliefs.

I'll write Deirdre on my hand today.

Some good news here, Bev's latest and greatest scan showed the liver tumor to be smaller. The peritoneal nodule was also smaller, which indicates this course chemo has been effective. She is now on a [I]holiday[/I] from the chemo, hopefully for a long time!

A former student of mine from Marion Military Institute sent me the following message:

"I had a really bad accident while conducting a parachute jump with the German Special Forces Kommando's down in southern Bavaria. It was a night time combat equipment jump and we were misdropped into the trees. I drifted into the woods where my parachute got hung up in the trees and then the tree limbs broke and I plummetted 85 feet. Luckily, the ground broke my fall. However, not before I ended up shattering my right foot, fractured my pelvis, my coxib, and my back. I also did significant nerve damage affecting feeling and muscle control in my waist area to include my bladder and bowel function. That really sucks. But things continue to get better and I'm just lucky I'm alive really. 85 feet seems to be a pretty long way to fall especially having all that equipment attached to me when I hit the ground. I'm positive that things will get better and that I will make a good recovery. It will just be an uphill battle and very difficult. But I'm up for the challenge."

He is learning to walk again. I asked him if it'd be ok to do this and he said it would be awesome. He also said he'd join me in a workout soon. I told him I'd kick his a$$!!! :evilsmile Keep him in mind - his name is Joe and he has the heart of a lion.

I have a litany of things that have all hit since the weekend:

Jon, who is just about one of the kindest souls I have had the pleasure of meeting, and I have been friends since 2002. We had some professional interactions, but really, we have just been good friends. He was one of the people whose shoulder caught many, many tears during my divorce in 2003. He has always been there for me. He had a cardiac incident over the holidays. It was touch and go for several weeks, but today I received the horrible news that it appears he will not be recovering. His digestive tract has already shut down. His brain shows no signs of activity. His body is basically saying his time is done. The doctors are predicting he has somewhere between hours and days left. I am really at a loss. He was too young for this. His wife, Lori, and their two children are working through this the best they can, as well. Please keep Jon and his family in your thoughts and prayers. We all need a miracle for this one.

I was talking to my mother and found that my Uncle Tomas and Aunt Vivianne's family has been struck by tragedy all in the same week. My Aunt Vivianne caught that horrible stomach virus that has been going around and wound up in the hospital several times this past week for dehydration. Thankfully, it was while she was home, my Uncle Tomas suffered a fall and was taken to the ER where they discovered several infections he had been battling. He is still in the hospital. My cousin, Gabriella, was struck by a van as a pedestrian and sustained serious injuries to her leg. And finally, my cousin, Tomas, who received a kidney transplant from Gabby several years ago, went to the hospital with fluid in his chest and they're trying to determine his renal function. This all happened in the span of a week. Please keep their entire family in your thoughts and prayers. At the time they should be there for each other, they have all been struck down. My mother is doing her best.

This is really great and has me fighting back the tears. My mother has had a very challenging life. She is fighting depression, bipolar episodes, hyperthyroidism, eye problems, skin problems, heart failure, hearing loss, etc. etc. Her most recent struggle was a serious ear infection that caused her to lose hearing in her only functioning ear, leaving her deaf for about 3 months.

What strikes me the most about my mother is the fact that she never complains about her life. She's always happy and so very proud of her kids. My mother never asks for help and she is the bravest person I know. I made a website for her where I dedicate some of my athletic accomplishments to her. I've not posted in this thread before, as it's not an appropriate forum for my usual smart-a**edness. However, I think it's a beautiful thing and I'm really glad that you started it, Robert.

I just found out that a good friend of mine, whose name is Shawn, has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma... he's going in for his first chemo treatment this Friday, and they'll decide then whether or not to additionally do radiation therapy.

He's 23, bright, kind, and not a little aggressive (which is probably why we're good friends). He's a fighter and we're all extremely positive about his future, but if anyone else wants to add his name to their next WOD, I'd be grateful.

I have a date with a big tractor tire and sledgehammer this evening, and Shawn, Pamela, Rick, and as many others as I can fit on will be there, too...

My dad was doing really great with treatment and even gained 30 lbs. while getting chemo and radiation. Let's just say he's an overachiever. Anyway, he had some post-radiation pneumonitis, which appears to be clearing; however, they told him today that it's spread to his brain. They will discuss a new course of treatment with him tomorrow. Please keep him in your prayers. Again...his name is Bob.

My friend, Steve, has been diagnosed with Bell's palsy, which is being caused by a tumor in his brain. If anyone is willing to send a bit of positive energy his way, I'd really appreciate it. He is such a great guy and it is really hard to see him being limited by something like this.

A second request is that while I'm not personally friends with him, a motorcycle roadracer, Zsolt, was medevac'd from the races I was cornerworking for weekend before last. It turns out he broke his neck and two vertebrae in his back. As far as I can tell from the updates, he can feel pressure applied to his legs, but cannot move them yet. He is, however, able to move his arms a bit, so that is good. Unfortunately, he does not have medical insurance, so this is going to be more difficult than anticipated for him. He is a strong dude, but needs a lot of help.
