Knee issue with squats

When I go into a squat, I feel something strange in my knee. It feels like the top of my fibula and/or my lateral collateral ligament sort of pops into a new position. This occurs after going slightly past parallel. It happens on both legs but it feels more pronounced in my left. I have noticed that widening the angle of my feet reduces it, but they have to be very wide, like 150 degrees maybe, before it goes away. There is no audible sound or pain, but the feeling is disconcerting. I'm worried that the friction caused by the popping will wear away at something I might need later :p

Has anyone heard of this before or have any ideas about how to remedy it? Thanks.

Edit: I should mention this is not only with squats, but I just happened to really notice it while doing them. Some experimentation reveals that it happens whenever I bend my knees below about a 70 degree angle.

Re: Knee issue with squats

Check out the current "Patellar Tracking Disorder" thread under "Injuries". Your symptoms sound somewhat similar though less severe.
