Re: Knee Pain Lateral Side of Right Knee
It still could be meniscus, they don't have to have clicking or buckling, can be just painful

Knee Pain Lateral Side of Right Knee
49 Years Old. Has been achy but never truly painful - only typical weightlifting aches.

Three days ago squatting pain in the outside of the knee which when I shifted the knee more to the outside stopped. My knees were not buckling - but the shift outside made the pain go away. Knee does not hurt to walk. No swelling. Only tweaks of pain when bending the knee and this has begun to subside significantly in the past couple of days.

I was doing 5x5 with 225 - not a ton of weight. It did not happen while squatting - it just hurt while squatting. There has been no "oowie" moment.

Squatting is still uncomfortable - but improving.

At first I thought it was something to do with my lateral meniscus - but that typically presents with swelling, locking, clicking and inability to move or straighten the leg - none of which I have.

Illiotibial band? Knee strain? Ligamentous strain?

Any thoughts?

I was going to give it some time - about two weeks - and if it still hurt, see an orthopedist.

It seems to be improving - but I know that if I squatted again, it would aggravate it. Even squatting causes a bit of pain on the lateral aspect of the knee.

I absolutely hate getting old.

Re: Knee Pain Lateral Side of Right Knee
So. Saw an orthopedist. All meniscal tests negative. No pain on joint line. Yet, I still have pain in the knee pointing my toe to go downstairs and when I squat. The doctor indicated that I could have tweaked something or have a minor degenerative tear.

The issue is what do I do to (a) recover and (b) avoid aggravating it or worsening it.

It does seem to be improving albeit slowly.

Also a PT remarked to me that it could be ITB related. Interestingly when I did some mashing of the ITB - it allowed me to squat normally without pain. I am not sure that this is the complete solution - but it definitely lessened the pain in my knee.
