The weights are a seriously hike away from the bars.
I have noticed several details this year that give safety a priority. I think the plates were far away from the lifting area to prevent any bouncing bar injury. (They probably had Kevin Ogar in mind, though I disagree that the stack of plates played a part in his injury.) The 9' mark on the climbing rope requires athletes to descend with control nearly to the ground before dropping. The demo graphics state that athletes drop the bar in front of them and step over it before finishing an event. Behind-the-back drops are higher risk and are outside the standard. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I totally disagree. At one point, at least, the Crossfit Games were supposed to find "the fittest person on earth", not the person who is best at doing Crossfit.
I guess maybe that's changed, if the majority of Crossfitters think like you do. I guess my problem is that, although I enjoy watching the Games, I don't workout at a box and the program that I follow is an offshoot of CFFB which is really not Crossfit at all anymore. Therefore, it doesn't impress me who can handstand walk further than the next guy. I would much rather see the strongest, fastest, most athletic guy win, not the guy who's most skilled at unusual proprietary skills. Maybe that's just me.
The issue here is subjectivity. How do you define fitness and what constitutes the "fittest"? Look up a guy like Reinhold Messner (just an example). This is the 1st guy to climb the 14 8thousanders (peaks over 8,000 meters). He is also the first to climb Everest without supplemental oxygen. Can you grasp that feat? Yet, he isn't going to win any conversation in the classically strong sense. I have no clue if he can out DL Dan Green, out BS Lillebridge or Olympic lift like Dimas. I also don't know if he will beat David Rudisha in the 800m, but you can't question this guy as being fit, maybe an example of the fittest on the planet (especially mentally). All that being said, since you cannot agree on a standard for "what does the fittest mean", Crossfit, at least in the competitive sense, needs to make those standards - hence my argument. The first chance to prove those standards is through the open and further on into the regionals. This means if you don't have pistols, HS Walks and DUs down, you aren't in the competitive sense at least - worthy of being called the fittest on earth - by their standards. They must be set and without that, you can't keep score. Without a score, you don't define a winner. Now, what I think is often the case is the failure to move forward and embrace the change. A lot of the OGs started in the way where Crossfit was for the firefighter, Military, etc. It was in the backyard, in the garage, throwin' down on the ranch. That is an entirely separate Crossfit from COMPETITION CROSSFIT - as I've said over and over again. It is the special athlete - the one that dedicates their time to mastering handstands, Toe 2 Bars and Pistols whole also running and lifting some heavy weight. It is no longer (competitively) about the military and firefighter guys strictly that are looking to remove the fluff and stay efficient based upon what brings them home to the kids. Make the distinction of what Crossfit is to you and if nothing else, be happy in the journey and that fact that it may have highlighted overall fitness, and helped you to find another way to demonstrate your fitness. As for what we are watching this weekend, it is most certainly Crossfit, just maybe not in the way you want it. That is hard to swallow, but it doesn't make it less true. Crossfit today, as a name, in my opinion, is just something that ends with its superbowl - the games. We chase those athletes as representative of the best the SPORT has to offer. If it means being functionally fit (again, a dumb term) or some other subjective term for how to live one's life physically, then it doesn't need a title. It is just doing what you do for whatever reason you do it. Its like the NFL. That is a specific game, sport and other thing with rules, standards, teams, athletes. It doesn't represent backyard or my old New York street days of what FOOTBALL means to me. Those days were fun with friends, yelling and laughing where the QB said - "Yo Rich, run to that Buick, turn and the ball will be there." Memories and great times but I won't use that to dispute how the NFL has become with all the helmets, concussion protection, etc. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I'm at the South Regional. Seriously, wtf? The venue is really bad. Why did it have to change from the Freeman where EVERYONE could have a seat and watch. Now there is only space for about 2k people to sit. This was REALLY bad this year and if it's in the same venue next year I will NOT be going back I do not want to have to be stuffed like sardines to watch the action.
Also, there HAS to be a way to write a program for those treadmills like C2 has that let's you put the distance's on the big screen. |
OR, is this just another example of the growing disconnect between elite competitive Crossfitters and the thousands of "regular" Crossfitters in affiliates across the globe?
This. And my take on it is, just do whatever you want for fitness, for whatever goal makes you happy. If its to compete, then buckle down and do those specific movements that are kinda blah to the old school crossfitters. If it is to do it to become "better at life", then just do whatever makes you feel that way. I just do what I do so long as it fits the goal and I enjoy the process. The rest is secondary. In the end it all becomes just a bit more and more about money and mainstream. Hitting that wider audience, drawing attention etc. You don't have posters in Dicks Sporting Goods without the Rich Froning and Camille. You don't have people that kids look up to for the fame, pro athlete, money, medals, sponsorships, free athletic apparel, etc without the Rich and Fraser and Annie. So in essence, you have none of that stuff without the competition. The grass roots of it all is amazing but there is no big market/money and flourishing in that. Thats because people like that are happy with how things were back in 2009 and earlier (at the ranch, throwin' down, talking with friends, beers and BBQ). Today, the 14yr old is infatuated with what we see in the 2015 games on ESPN. That's america and that is the future. The future of Crossfit in my mind is the competition. The sport of Crossfit. The "do it to be fit" part..you don't need Crossfit the brand and name for that. You just need to define what fit means to you and just do your own thing. If its running outside to experience the life of the world, then do that. If its competition - then you had better get used to a Trueform Runner. BIG diff.. |

This is probably against the rules simply for spectator consideration. The cameras and crowd are in a certain direction, and you wouldn't want the athletes to turn their backs to the viewers. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I noticed Camille doing some unusal box jumps in Event 3.
She jumps with two feet and lands on the box with only one foot. I'm not sure this is within standard, but her judge let her do this type of jump several times without calling "no rep." I've never seen that fly in a CrossFit competition before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjON8rlziik&t=374m55s (wfs) The games website describes the standard:
Box Jump Over Each rep begins with a two-footed jump. One-footed jumps and step-ups are not permitted. The athlete may jump over the box without touching it, or may land on top before jumping off to the other side. The athlete may not use their hands, and the feet must go over the box, not around it. Each rep ends on the opposite side of the box from where it began. The next rep will begin from there and return to the first side. Stepping down from the box and single-foot landings are permitted. Men will use a 24-inch box and women will use an 18-inch box.
The standard clearly says you must leave the ground with a two-footed jump. It also clearly says that when coming down from the box, a single-foot landing is permitted. It's not clear if landing on the box with one foot is permitted, unless you interpret "single-foot landings are permitted" to include going up on the box. I'm guessing that Camille would have clarified her planned technique at the athlete briefing before the event, or with her judge before the heat. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
The rules specified that single-foot landings are permitted. She took off with two feet and landed with one.

Then maybe they need to change the motto of the Games from "Fittest on Earth" to "Best Crossfitter on Earth".
You're looking too much into it. CrossFit is a brand, and that is their slogan. There is a coffee shop down the street that says they have "the worlds best coffee." The MLB claims the winners of the World Series as "World Champions," even though they don't play anyone internationally. If CrossFit wants to call the games winner "The fittest on earth," so be it. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
This ^
There is definitely a disconnect between the elites and the other 98% of Crossfitters that will never reach that level. I can't do some of the advanced movements (yet) but I will be able to someday. I don't have any urge to try and compete with those guys. I prefer my hour a day and knowing that I am fitter than I was yesterday. As per above, yes, it is their slogan. Let 'em live. I do think Rich Froning is one of the fittest in the world over a wide variety of tests, but that's my .02. Sure someone can be fitter and probably is but they didn't enter the Open so we'll never know! As for MLB and the NFL "World Champions" always kills me. No one plays football (American) outside of the US, at least not at a high level. And whenever there is an international baseball competition the US never does well. So I agree, their "World Champions" by default. |

Sure there are always going to be some things to hammer out to make it better, but overall I am very impressed by the logistical and operational side. Even down to the pads on the rig uprights for the muscle ups was thought of. Well done Rogue and HQ. Other interesting notes: The number of Nike's I saw on both athletes and fans. Wow. Wonder if Adidas would sell Reebok to Nike? That would be something. Then Nike could really get into the Games.. Adidas would make a tidy profit thanks to Crossfit. Personally I like the Nano's the best.

Yes music.. I can remember two times coming out to the workout with the Price is Right theme song playing.. what kind of DJ would play that once let alone twice..
Crossfit has this love affair with people who do x fit out of the sport.. Rick Ross.. yes he has lost weight and happy for him.. he gets enough press and media without x fit. Plus he let Garret Fisher grow his hair out long enough that he needs a head band.. Sorry GF gotta get back to the games. We love the old hair style. I thought that the events were overall good. Shoulder gotta be hurting pups right now for them. Mine hurt just doing workout #6 yesterday. Looking forward to the Regionals in Cali this weekend. Will not be the same with out Jason K.. yes he will be in the team but team events at the regional level were ho hum.. yawn.. boring.. The games workouts were cool yesterday . I love the big bob part were it turns into a exercise circus pulled and pushed all around. Cheers |

Yes they do, so why limit it to JUST techno? |

I like to workout to Beethoven and movie soundtracks. They're never gonna play that at a competition.
Emily Bridgers is the real deal. Her performance at the Atlantic Regionals really impressed me. I expect she will medal at the Games.
Four first place finishes out of seven events. She dominated the weekend. Definitely not intimidated by have the 2013 champ in the lane next to her. |
Wonder if Adidas would sell Reebok to Nike? That would be something. Then Nike could really get into the Games.. Adidas would make a tidy profit thanks to Crossfit. Personally I like the Nano's the best.
That would be like Toyota buying Delorean. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I really don't know what all of the hype is all about with Nike.. Funny Reebok supports crossfit plenty making the games what it is.. yes they might make money but they bring so much to x fit. Nike not so much.

Reebok supporting CF was a simple marketing decision. It wasn't to support CF. Did you see anybody wearing Reebok 4 years ago? They want to sell shoes and it has worked well for them. Now Nike has come to play. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Attended the Atlantic Regionals in Atlanta to support an athlete from our gym. The field is definitely stacked and overall, the events were fun to watch except waiting for everyone to get off the true form runners but I believe that has been covered. Athletes definitely put on a great show. They make things look very easy which clearly, are not.
HQ does a good job running the events...everything went off on time and you can tell it was well planned. Vendor area seemed good. I did not buy anything but looked around. I will echo the sentiments on venue. The Atlanta Congress center sucked. The location sucked. Food inside sucked and like the South, on Sat or Sun you could not get a seat if you were not there early. I stayed downtown Atlanta which I will never, ever do again. The convention center is not close to any hotel...even the "connected" Omni hotel was a 20 min walk. On a map, it looked like it was much closer but the venue itself is so huge it takes 15 minutes to walk from one side to the other (which you must do coming from the hotels). Yes, I know we're all fit people and personally, I don't mind the walk but I had my kids with me and it's a PITA. Parking was more reasonable it sounds as I had to park on Sunday vs. hotel shuttle or walking. I parked close by for $10. HQ - please find a venue with more seating, better food options (and more of them so you don't have to stand in line for 20 minutes to get something), and make the place within walking distance of hotels where the downtown area is more tourist friendly. If it goes down in Atlanta again, I won't be going back. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I've been thinking about these venue complaints.
Maybe HQ has chosen venues with small seating capacity to keep costs down. The real audience may be with online video production. They've certainly put a top-notch effort into that. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
HQ is keeping the venues smaller to keep the atmosphere better.. there's a post or article or video on it somewhere as of a couple days ago.
They were talking about how some of the venues last year were half empty during events, even though there were a ton of people there. They would much rather the entire arena be packed and full of energy, then to appear half empty, even with the same number of people. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Hmm. Sounds like they're trying to avoid some of the look of the NPGL Grid events - half empty stands make the sport seem unpopular.
Small venues seem to work for the Open workout announcements. They set up seating in a CrossFit affiliate with the scaffolding surrounding the athletes - it's like an MMA pit atmosphere. For Regionals it may be a better choice to have a larger venue to accommodate more fans, but cordon off specific areas for seating - adapt the available seating based on how much of a crowd shows up. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
While it may look good on camera, it is really a burn to the people who attend.
