Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I kind of hope they go back to grass roots a bit for this year, and have more stuff that is something you can't really practice at home/gym, less technique oriented stuff and more pure simple fitness, like they have done in previous games.

What kind of grass roots stuff do you have in mind?

Sandbag carry comes to mind, from the 2010 games.
That was a really good video. Really enjoyed it. |

Like i said more stuff you cant exactly train for in the gym (ex: 2012 I think they had double unders and that sledgehammer thing), odd object carry, maybe odd shape rocks/stones loading, less technical lifts so that fitness is the major test not skill. Don't get me wrong i'm not saying throw out everything, you need some events that are high skill, just like you need events that are longer time domains, shorter domains, power, strength etc...but there wasn't much unknowable or reall unexpected in terms of exercise selection last year |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
i like the events that have equipment that is readily available but used in an unexpected way e.g. clean sprint ladder.

The sprint carry had odd objects. The sprint sled was a brand new piece of equipment, as was the Big Bob (is that what they called it?). Plus, the Push and Pull had the athletes pulling the drag sled all arms while seated, which I doubt a lot of people previously trained/tried. Unknown/unknowable is a great philosophy, but you can't expect every single event to be some completely new everything. Most of the wods are going to remain typical CF programming: either simple couplets or triplets, that play with the weights, rep schemes, intervals, whatever, or the occasional long chipper that tackle a lot of movements and test pacing and endurance. I think each year seeing just one or two truly "unknown/unknowable" aspects is plenty. You don't want athletes that train certain movements all year to find virtually none of them in their global competition. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Come Friday we will all know...
I still think some type of ladder for time (8-15minutes) or something with a ladder EMOM. Have these two fight it out means only 1 thing.... weight increase or rep increase and something small on top of it to hit the lungs heavy. |

This video discusses athletes that have moved and changed regions for this year's competition. Sam Briggs moved to the South East Region. The commentary is, "She IS going to take one of the top five spots." Maybe Sam thought, "There is no way I'm missing the Games again this year," and moved to where she knew she could make that happen. Honestly, moving to an "easier" region is often speculated. I doubt that actually happens. There are a lot of other factors that make someone move. I was also thinking that it has been five years since the individual women had an American win the Games. 2010 - Kristen Clever (US) 2011 - Annie Thorisdottir (Iceland) 2012 - Annie Thorisdottir (Iceland) 2013 - Sam Briggs (UK) 2014 - Camille Leblanc-Bazinet (Canada) |
