I may have a medical test in approx. February 2007 which is basically a step up test. It measures your heart rate and once you reach a certain BPM you are told to stop.

Any ideas on some persific training till then that will enable my BPM to last longer? Its quite important (for a job) and I want the highest score!!

Aside from specific training modalities since they are testing heart rate I'd work on some relaxation techniques to minimize any artificial heart rate increases. You can probably make a significant difference there.

Adam - I would suggest weighted steps. Find out the height of your step for the test, make something that high and work the test protocol with a weight vest on or holding weights. Come test time the reduced load should make for a reduced load on your heart. Be rhythmic in your stepping and pump both arms upward as you step if for no other reason than to make yourself think you are unloading your legs a bit. When I run stairs I do that and it seems to help.

No caffeine that morning, eat lightly, be well hydrated and wear light shoes and clothes. Don't get all wound up about the test and as Roger suggested be relaxed and calm before you start. Arrive don't want to freak out in traffic and get your HR up to 130 before you take your first step.

The sprints will help as will Tabata Squats, but I think practicing the event itself with some extra weight will work the best.

Best point of all...if you're more than a cup a day guy, you probably never even notice how much higher caffeine elevates your heartrate.

I always, as stupid as it is, get all tuned up before I get my blood pressure taken because I think about my heart rate. I would probably be better off taking a valium prior to such a test.
