I just got done making power rings out of PVC. They are great and I recommend this option to anyone who is as cheap as me. I made two pairs (one for my parents) for under 45$ and that is even including a bag of sand to keep them from warping while bending. I have already done a few dips, pullups, and even a few very ugly false gripped muscleups and they are very nice.

The directions I used were compiled from this site. Here they are: Rings
Schedule 40 PVC 3/4 inch (2 cm?).
An 8 inch (20 cm) diameter ring means 25-inch (63.5 cm) length of pipe will take everything you can give it and more, it's quite tough and will last at least until Santa brings you the real thing.

Heat it for 5 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and I suggest leather gloves to handle & wrap the soft tube around whatever you've got for a mandrel carefully pinching/shaping the tube to keep it from flatenning too much. I also suggest using a quench pool of cool water to harden the ring quickly once you've attained the desired shape. Duct tape around the open ends of the tube during heating will minimize the flaring effect on the openings. Thread a rope or a lashing strap (mine are 12 feet/ 3.5 meters) through each curved tube ring and voila! Start dipping, the real work can then begin.

If you do this, make sure you fill the PVC with sand before putting in oven - this keeps the pipe's shape when you bend it after heating it. They are the 6' long variety. I originally got the 15' variety but it was too long, however if I had something really tall to hook it to I probably would have kept the 15' length tie-down straps. Don't get the straps that have a metal ratchet - the ratchet will poke and rub against your upper arm and hurt like a SOB and the ratcheting mechanism is awkward to use when there's no tension on the straps (i.e. when you're not hanging on them!).

Handling the shipping would be more difficult than making them.

Materials ~25$
-Sand
-5ft of 3/4" PVC
-2 pieces of precut(at store) chain that is stronger than 400lbs, and small enough to fit through pipe.
-2 quick links that can connect both ends of chain together.
-2 6ft tiedowns, preferably w/o buckle.


*Cut 2 25in pieces of 3/4" PVC pipe w/ hacksaw.
*Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
*Fill pipes with sand by duct taping the ends.
*Place in oven for 5min.
*Meanwhile fill sink with water.
*Take pipes out of oven, bend around a 5lb/2.5kg weight.
*Place bent PVC in water.
*String chain through pipe
*figure out rigging with tiedowns
*try a muscleup

I pulled an old t-shirt through mine instead of using sand. (unbent a wire hanger, fished the trimmed shirt through the pipe, heat, bend, cool, pull shirt out, use again, etc).

Do the chains tear up your arms when doing dips?

The chains haven't been a problem, but the only times I've been doing dipping motions is on the end of muscleups. Once I get into higher reps it may need to be solved with some althletic tape.

The cool thing about getting a bag of sand for your ring construction is that you can use it as weights in a backpack after double baggin the sand in ziplocks.

Yeah, I still have sand from making medicine balls. I am just lazy and didn't want to make a mess.
