white bread vs wheat bread

i know wheat bread is better for you than white bread, but would it be better to eat a larger amount of wheat bread or a smaller amount of white bread. (Subway for example: getting a flatbread sub instead of a regular footlong on wheat bread)

If you are gluten intolerant, then go with white bread.

Ideally, you probably don't want to eat bread at all really. If I'm forced into a sub what me and my friends do is usually dump half the bread in the trash and eat it open faced. That is, if you were going to go Paleo or something of that nature.

Not sure if any of the bread choices at Subway are going to matter one way or the other? Some people scrape out the inside "fluff" part of the bread to reduce the carbs, IIRC.

Note also that wheat bread is not necessarily any healthier than white bread. You need to find whole wheat (or whole grain) bread. I had been Subwaying for a while and ordering the wheat bread, and finally got around to checking their nutritional information, and sure enough, it's not whole wheat. Basically, wheat flour is just as milled down as white flour, it's just not bleached yet.

However, if you have them pile on the veggies and some nice chicken breast, you're getting a good dose of protein and fiber along with the less-than-ideal wheat breat, so you're probably not doing too badly.

There is virtually no difference in "whole wheat" and "white" bread.

Here is the general break down:

White bread is made solely with the starchy endosperm part of the grain which, as most know, has almost no nutrients.

100% Whole Wheat Bread is the same exact starchy endosperm with the nutirents stripped but it has some bran mechanically added back in.

Whole grain bread starts with the starchy endosperm and has both bran and germ mechanically added back in. As with the other options, virtually all nutrients are lost in the process.

If you need bread I would say use sprouted wheat. If you have to eat at Subway, eat a salad.

Pick your poison. White bread has less vitamins and minerals and a higher glycemic index. Whole wheat has more minerals, vitamins, fiber, and lower glycemic index, but also comes with phytates, which bind minerals and prevent absorption, and more lectins, which contribute to leaky gut and auto-immune disorders. Traditionally made breads (i.e., sourdough) with long, slow fermentation may alleviate some of these negatives, but probably not totally.

Also, as noted, "wheat" bread doesn't really mean anything.

thanks for the responses guys. i try to zone principles with 5 block meals and two block snacks. except for breakfast, i usually never get anything exact. when i get Subway, i usually do grilled chicken sub on wheat with everything and ranch dressing. normally i do try to cut down on my bread intake but Subway is so damn good (and Quizno's too).

Pack your lunch, eating out is bogus unless you're forced too. In that case, have them load up a bag or plate with the "fillings" of the sandwich and eat it with a fork or your fingers. Better yet, carry your lunch in, eat with your friends that order lunch. If asked by staff what you're doing, tell them your allergic to bread.
Saves you money, saves your eating program and overall, makes good sense.

If you go to Subway, skip the bread entirely and have the grilled chicken sub made into a salad.
