2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Should we have another official thread this year? All right! Let's do this!

In the last few years I've enjoyed having one place to discuss, ask questions, speculate, and recap the Games season competition. Welcome aboard. Let's see what happens this year.

http://games.crossfit.com/article/whats-new-2015 (wfs)

There are some significant changes this year:
- super Regionals
- scaled division
- teenage division
- state and country champions.

I have been a friend and followed Nick Fory's efforts to qualify for the Games from the Central East region. I don't think the super-Regional competition will work in his favor.

I wonder if the scaled division means that the Rx division will have more difficult work outs. " If you cannot get one rep of the prescribed version of the workout, or simply find the scaled workout more appropriate for you, you’ll be able to opt for scaled."

I'm guessing there will be prize money for the state and country champs.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I think you can count on the Rx Open working the weight loads more into the "heart" of the WOD. For instance, 13.1 did have an ascending snatch ladder that went up to 205#, but started at 75#. If that same type of WOD happens this year, I bet it starts at 95#, at least, and probably gets higher, sooner. I think the Rx division will see some new standards on other things, e.g.: 12'/11' wall balls, 30"/24" box jumps, and I think some advanced movements like MU (definitely ring, maybe bar this year?) will show up earlier in WODs, instead of being reserved just for the end (e.g., 14.4). I think this year's "waiting for you at the end if you get to it" may be triples!

*shakes fist*

I got one, once, sorta by accident. I was doing doubles, and then just went, "let me see if I can........*whizzzzz*..." and managed a triple. My coach was watching and went, "whoa.....that was a triple!" Haven't been able to do one since. Four weeks.....

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I would like to see an OHS+TTB couplet like they did in the Team Series.

I would absolutely love to see bar muscle ups in an Open wod. That would be great for me.

For the Masters Qualifier Workout, I would like to see Jackie, Diane or Amanda as the benchmark workout. I'm good at all of those.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Would guess that they drop the hammer on the open because they have the scaled division. Might not be just a met con athon.. like the past minus some of the workouts.

Hoping for a all over HSPU, Bar muscle ups, HS walks, rope climbing.. stuff like that.

In a bit over a month will find out.

Nursing a back injury.. so hopefully will be better prior to the open.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Not a fan of the new regional system. They've basically taken the games out of the countries surrounding the USA. I don't know how many people would travel to Texas from latina america, or Hartford from anywhere in Canada East, its taken a lot of the pride and national aspect out of it I find.

I do think they will up the ante for the open being that they have the scaled option, but exactly what that will entail I don't know, I just hope no sloppy form, and a variety of tests/aspects.

I wonder if they will out that athlete who they said was being dodgy about being tested. Castro posted it on his IG.

And also if we see some big names opt to not even do the open because they are doing Grid.

This is a video clip of the awesome little CrossFit models that Dave Castro uses to plan out Regional work outs. It was posted on the Instagram page of Sevan Matossian, CrossFit photographer and interviewer. Dave said, "So, we're going to have to kick someone out of the Open today. They were on the list to be drug tested, and they basically d****ed around the testers and lied to them about their location. (Off screen interjection?) Yeah, it's crazy, huh?"

This would have to refer to someone good enough for off-season testing, i.e., a Regional-level competitor at least.

Castro's use of the word "today" is interesting. Sevan posted this a week ago and adds the comment that this happened at 2:22pm. This infers that whoever got kicked out would have been told that day.

One commenter suggested it sounds staged. If so, it doesn't sound any more staged than some of Castro's past discipline actions.

So no matter if "you" are competing scaled, open, teen, masters or team everyone does 15.1-15.5? Or is there different OPEN WORKOUTS for each of those events?
Help me out Gang trying to pass this info around at the gym I go to since there is a handful of "masters" and a lot of people interested in the new "scaled" divison. Thanks

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I think it's just a matter of each workout having scaling options. For example, take 14.1 from last year. 30 doubles, 15 snatches. Rx may be as stated with weight loads of 75/55, 65/45 for Masters. As it turned out, the "snatch" was clarified as "any shoulder to overheard." This year, they may restrict that purely as true snatches, and then allowed scaled to do "shoulder to overhead." Further, scaled may be 75 singles instead of doubles.

I would assume everyone will be doing, at heart, the same workout; scaled will just back off weights and tone down more advanced movements.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Castro's Instagram mentioned Muscle ups, Deadlift and Burpees.. wonder if that will be true.. most hints he gives seem to ring true.. just don't know duration, AMRAP or chipper, weights... getting heavier or something new like getting lighter, reps or order..

Michael Cook 01-27-2015 09:33 AM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

How about this:
AMRAP 10
10 burpee box jumps
10 DL 225
10 muscle ups RX, 10 C2B scaled

My guess is 12 min am rap-
5 MU ring or bar
7 Dead lifts 315#
9 bar facing burpees

I've been proven wrong in the past, but I'd be amazed if the words they cropped into that video (burpees, MUs, deadlifts) weren't a red herring. I can't see Castro actually giving out any clues over a month out from the Open.

Sort of agree. Why would he drop hints so early? He clearly had fun doing so last year once the Open got going, but to be giving 15.1 so much attention by hinting a month out seems unusual.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

He did it with the chipper and again with the open workout 14.5.. yes no reps just the two exercises. Just hints.. Plus if you watch the show talks about Mainsite workouts 30 muscle ups for time strict.. hope not strict. All signs lead to towards Muscle ups in 15.1 but who really knows.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Castro wasn't much for dropping clues about the contents of the open wods. Last year I think the biggest clue he gave was 1 or 2 days before the chipper workout where he did that instagram vid of him in front of a wood chipper.

That being said, it is fun to speculate about open wods.

Vic's idea of amrap 12 of 5 mu, 7 DL 315 9 burpees is sounds like a challenging wod, but I don't think the 1st movement of the 1st wod is going to be MU.

I'm actually more inclined to think that might be a possibility. Just set the tone right away and let everyone know if they should sign up for scaled or Rx.

That would definitely constitute a definitive "The 2015 Rx Open is here" announcement.

The first week I think is going to be exiting ... at least a 10min WOD.

Based on the videos they have dropped on us over the past few weeks *Nine Foundational Movements* I think they are sending us a hint there.

Something that will keep the crowd alive and inspire us all for the coming weeks that we can all do, something simple but we are going to hate him for :)

Amrap - 10+min

WBs 22lbs
and
Sumo dead lift ladder

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I listened to the Crossfit radio show 365 last night where Castro was interviewed. One interesting thing he mentioned is that Castro is not involved at all in the main site wod programming. It is a different group of people from CFHQ that does the main site programming. He didn't give any specific hints as to the content of the Open or Regionals. He did talk about the instagram pic of the regional setup that had a rig in the middle of the playing field. He noted that that setup would have more flexibility for programming and make the competition more visually appealing.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

How about squat clean grace with 225/165 lbs?
Scaled 155/115

Same thing with Isabel, with squat snatches as the standard.

Or even better yet...
30 MU, Isabel with 185/135lbs, grace with 185/135 lbs for time, squat snatches and squat cleans required, 20 minute cap.

I would also love to see a max lift attempt.

It would be nice if Castro gave us "minimal standards" for deciding whether to pick the scaled or RXed divisions. Possibly max lifts, certain skill requirements, times on benchmarks, ect...

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Here is my take.

Based on what Dave Castro explained as to why they decided on a scaled division my guess is that the Open will remain very similar to years past.

The scaled events are for people who cannot do the standard Crossfit movements.

I liked some of the different stuff from last year. It was good, so expect more of the same type of testers.

If you were able to Rx WODs the last couple years my guess is more of the same. This is not Regionals or the Games.

Last year we discussed that Camille lived and worked out a lot in southern California, but registered and won the Regionals for Canada East.

The CrossFit Games Instagram page just posted a photo of her, reporting that she is registered for the Open in the South West region. http://instagram.com/p/ydLgqlBoRC/?modal=true (wfs)

I don't know what's going on in her personal life, or where she is living. I just found it interesting. In the combined Regionals, she'll be competing against these women:

There is no way the Open is going to have 225# squat cleans. Crikey.

Jason A Smith 02-03-2015 11:55 AM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

Why not ? There was 210# snatches programmed two years in a row.

So far the heaviest clean has been 165#. I am much more adept with cleans so I would be just fine with it.

Last year the whole season was heavy on snatch/OHS. They were in the Open, at Regionals and at the Games twice.

Victor J McQuaide 02-03-2015 01:03 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I could see them doing a workout that involved either or both snatch or C&J starting 95/135ish then going up to heavy with some other lung burner in between.

Maybe burpee over the bar and c&j for 17 min..
95,155, 185 then drop the hammer 230#

We will see in a few weeks... I think that it will be heavy or a chance to go heavy with some of the workouts.. might throw a hero workout or a girl in also.. They are free to move anyway they please. I can see HSPU, pistols, hs walks etc.. in the open. And I can see 3 unders in Regionals and games.

Be ready for anything..

I am sure that 1 out of 5 will be a repeat just to see how the athletes are progressing in 2015.

Michael Cook 02-03-2015 02:06 PM

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

After looking at the wods in the Team Series and comparing RX to scaled, I think the 2015 Open is going to be similar in load and difficulty to previous years opens.

I think we will see a repeat.

CFHQ seems to really like the deadlift/box jump couplet, and the thruster/pull up couplet, so I would not be suprised to see those pairings.

Then, I think they will through in a couplet or triplet that hasn't been done in the Open before, like the OHS+TTB couplet that was in the Team Series.

I hope they have the live Open announcements like they had last year. That was fun to watch, and it looked like the people who were there live had a good time.

Maybe it will BUILD up to that, in some kind of ladder, but it's not going to be just some couplet or triplet with 225# squat cleans. I'm fairly strong (at 41) and have all of the basic movements, including MU, but 225# is damn near my 1RM. Doing that for reps is elite level.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I think with there being a scaled division we are going to see a clear difference in weight for the RX division.

Castro and company are going to split the groups early making sure that we take the decision to go either RX or scaled.

To split the group early all they need to do is program muscle up's in 15.1 and the game will be set.

I would like to see a classic FRAN or Grace but with added muscle ups.

With the RX and scaled version, I can see 225 cleans for reps happening. Think about it, they have said the RX division is designed for people who can make it to regionals in terms of strength levels/skill levels, and who have a shot of going to the Games, if you can't do more than 225 clean you're not likely to go to the games (men's open division)

I am torn about the whole RX and scaled thing, on the one hand I think its cool that we get to see the top athletes get challenged sooner and etc, and it also gives the people who aren't on that level a chance to do well...ON THE OTHER HAND I think it takes away a big draw to the games which is that avg joe can see exactly how he compares to Jason Khalipa or Rich Froning in the same workout, I think it helps people relate.

If they make RX too hard for "advanced" CFers, it will suck and take all the fun out of it IMO.
I've worked hard to get to my level (beyond intermediate but not elite), if I had to compete in the scaled division it would take all the satisfaction out of it. Sure, I'll never make it to games or regionals, but I've worked hard to get to this level. Competing with beginners is no fun. Hopefully they'll strike a balance. My 2 cents and mini-rant.
