Wanted to know. How do you guys feel about the fact that during the Sundays first event, judges re-evaluated scores; therefore putting Mat Fraser not 4 but 10 points behind Ben Smith? Note that athletes came into the Sundays first event knowing that Mat needed only to stay ahead of Ben Smith. Interesting that judges were not able to do this before the event or before the final day of the competition.
(My opinion is that Reebok did not want a Nike sponsored athlete to win a competition where they are the biggest sponsor.) O, and the Team competition was also a fluke. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Mat didn't lose it, because they changed the score of the sprint events. He lost the lead, because he was slow and sloppy during these events in the first place and DNF the PIG-chipper (that last rope climb....)
Ben only really screwed up the sandbag event and stayed much more consistent, even up to the final event. Mat got 1st on PTTM1 and about 17th on PTTM2, whereas Ben was right up the top five. I'm a big Fraser fan and he improved dramatically over the cours of on year. To change a weakness into a strenght is no small feat! And he has still a lot of potentiall to grow. It's only his second year at the games and goddangit only his first real year, where he took it seriously! BUT: Ben Smith has more than earned it - he stayed consistent during the whole games - no conspiracy needed!!!! :) |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
The real comparison are their weaknesses
Matt = 12 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 2 - n - n - n - 4 - 1 - 2 - 2 - n (avg 3.33) Weaknesses = Technique - Sprinting, he has the power, its technique - Adv Gymnastics, has the components, core stability, strength, power, again its just technique Ben = 7 - n - 10 - 2 - 1 - 11 - 6 - 1 - 2 - 6 - 7 - 4 - 4 (avg 5.08) Weaknesses - Sandbag was surprisingly low (Long work Capacity issue?) - Didn't show the same consistency as Matt in general. Avg position difference = 1.74 = 6.99 pts / event = Matt 90.87 pts ahead for the win over 13 events. IF WE IGNORE THE WEAKNESSES. Matt weaknesses are skills and technique, Bens are a general lacking overall compared to Matt. CF Games tests well roundness and recovery, most sports specialize, Matt certainly used too. Matts gonna stay at the top for a long time to come. My moneys on Matt next year by a mile S |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
@Sean - I'm not sure your analysis really means a whole lot.
"Matt 90.87 points ahead....IF WE IGNORE THE WEAKNESSES." Well, isn't that the whole point? That each competitor has weaknesses? I mean, that's akin to saying, "We would've won, if only we hadn't let them score more than us." The other glaring hole in your analysis is that you have removed more bad placements for Fraser than for Smith. You remove 4 event placings for Fraser to give him an average finish of 3.33 over 9 events (removing a 24th, 37th, 32nd, and 17th). However you only remove one of Smith's events (his 34th on the sandbag). What happens if you remove Smith's four lowest events? Then it looks like this: Fraser: 12-2-2-3-2-n-n-n-4-1-2-2-n (average of 3.33) Smith: 7-n-n-2-1-n-6-1-2-6-n-4-4 (average of 3.66) Which for all intents and purposes is a tie. Or, we could actually include all of the events and you get: Fraser: 12-2-2-3-2-24-37-32-4-1-2-2-17 (average of 10.76) Smith: 7-34-10-2-1-11-6-1-2-6-7-4-4 (average of 7.31) I mean, look you can skew the numbers all sorts of ways if you start manipulating the results. What happens if I only drop their single lowest placing? Fraser: 12-2-2-3-2-24-n-32-4-1-2-2-17 (average of 8.58) Smith: 7-n-10-2-1-11-6-1-2-6-7-4-4 (average of 5.08) Your analysis is basically handpicked to have Fraser come out the winner. The whole point of the Games is to find out who has more wholes in their GPP. Generally that means minimizing the events you do poorly in and placing consistently high (basically the formula that Froning used). Smith had as many wins as Fraser. Smith had 3 more top-10 finished than Fraser, and won the overall points battle. So not sure your contention that "Ben's [weaknesses] are a general lacking overall compared to Matt." Feel free to refute, but I think you have a hard time (this year) making the case that Fraser was the more well-rounded, more generally well-prepared athlete. Smith is the only person in the entire competition who finished out of the top-10 two times or less (on the men's or women's side)....that screams to me "general well-roundedness without any real weaknesses." |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Anyone else think it's kinda crazy that Davidsdottir only won 1 event the whole Games? It happened to be the last event, which was fortuitous. So many good athletes on both sides, the competition will only get tighter and tighter.

Really? Guess I didn't pay as much attention to that. You don't have to win them all, just be in the hunt on a consistent basis. Total side note: Camille was exposed this year, last year she was pretty fortunate with the events and several top competitors not being there (injury, missed cut, etc.) She's a fantastic competitor, but she's barely top 10 for me on a yearly basis. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Watching the awards, I believe Bailey, Smith and Ence were the only athletes that won more than one event (and they each only won 2)? I think that speaks volumes to the programming being very well-rounded and that you couldn't simply be "the strongest" and run away with this, or just have a "great engine." The mix really tested brute force work, gymnastics, endurance, strength/technique, etc... Was it "not true Crossfit," as Amanda Goodman not-so-subtly jabbed? Yes, but that's only because, IMHO, "true Crossfit" has to recognize that most people can't build random equipment on the spot, it has to stick to (largely) the core equipment/facilities throughout the year, and into the Open and Regionals, too. The Games, however, is no holds-barred. You're talking the fractions of a percentage of the people, the elite test, anything goes, and you have to deal.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
^^ sam briggs and spencer hendel also with 2 wins.
I think smith's performance on the soccer chipper was really where it turned, taking first on that one and beating hendel's time (who went ludicrously fast and was in a different heat so smith really had to gun it without having someone to pace). on a different note -- the icelanders are the targaryens of crossfit with the flowing white/blond hair and potential to dominate the crossfit world for some time. winter is coming and they are ready! |

smith jumped 6 places from last year (7th to 1st), fraser didn't improve any. so going by that logic, if Fraser is in 1st in 3 months, then smith would be transcendent. :D
I'm referring to next year. Matts weaknesses are experienced based and skill based, far easier to fix then Bens issues. Hold the games again in 3 months and Matt would crush.
S
What are Smith's weaknesses? He didn't do well on the sandbag carry (and we don't really know why...he wasn't shown much when it aired). Outside of that, where was he weak? His worst finish besides that evnet was 11th (the top quarter of the field). Could Matt win next year? Sure. It came down to the final event. Fraser will probably never do overly well in the sprint events no matter how much he trains...he'll do better w/rope climbs next year I suspect...but I thought the whole conclusion of the weekend was that Smith didn't have many (any?) holes to fix. You said in your original post that Smith "Didn't show the same consistency as Matt in general." Standard deviation (e.g. spread around the mean) of Fraser's placing: 12.72 Standard deviation of Smith's placing: 8.64 So Smith was more consistent (generally) that Fraser, not vice versa. So in the end, is this your argument? "Fraser's weaknesses were x, y, and z. He'll correct those by next year and dominate. Smith's weaknesses are a lack of consistency [which we just showed really isn't true], therefore he won't dominate next year." What if Fraser can't correct his weaknesses? What if he's just weak? I'm not saying that's true...I just don't buy your logic (or the underlying presuppositions). |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
This is just me, but I am sorta getting tired of the "rigged so Froning could win" stuff. There were NINETEEN team events. Aside from Froning by himself (ONE event), the entire team factored into the win. Khalipa, Hackenbruck, plenty of other top athletes had their chance to "shine" by themselves, and they were beat by Rich's teammates if I remember the heats correctly.
I think its of most people's opinion that NorCal would've either won or been VERY close had Miranda not gone down. But I find it silly to claim its rigged for one person with "solo events" when in all reality that means they took Rich OUT of the competition for 5 straight events and his TEAM scored all those points. Sure there was only a certain number of teams at that point - thats because they outperformed the other teams for the 12 events prior to get there. With all that being said - I was rooting for Invictus because of my crush on Lauren Fisher. I just think there is too many conspiracy theories going on at this point. (*cough* Fraser "couldnt" win cause hes a Nike guy *cough) :D |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
1/3 of the events in the team competition this year were counted from either all male or all female efforts. Mayhem, lead by Froning had by far the most dominating performance of any team in that department in the male only events. Their team comprised of Rich (4 time winner, 5 time top 2 competitor), James Hobart (who has been top 20 at the games) and Matt Hewett (top 20 last year in the central east). The male side of their team was stacked and the way the events rolled out definitely played well for them especially getting three wins in those solo events. Granted they did well in a lot of other events, but reality is that this year with the "super teams" they obviously wanted an opportunity to showcase the big names out there.
In contrast I went and looked at previous years team events, and there were zero solo events and at the most 200 points for just male/female scoring, a 10% increase from previous years and enough to make an overall difference. The male side of their team would be like Crossfit Reykjavik fielding a team with Annie, Katrin and one of their other top women competing. They would have crushed the other girls in the field. The male side of their team was by far the best in the field and the women were good enough. As far as Fraser vs. Smith. Ben has been on the podium three times in seven years and is a proven performer, he was healthy this year too so no surprise there. As far as Fraser's weaknesses, I think everyone here missed the very obvious one. His grip strength, it was lack of grip strength/endurance that cost him a pile of money. If he had it he would have made the rope climbs and then blitzed those KBs and won, otherwise (like most of the top people) his sprinting sucks, which likely is more technique, but it could be speed too. Look for enhanced gripping prowess and more of the same of what he did this year and he will be a force for the title again. His "cardio" is ridiculous. The other thing is he is one of maybe 4 guys (?) to have multiple podium finishes and one of three guys to do it back to back years, the other guys.....Froning and Khalipa. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
I didn't follow the teams at all this weekend, I guess I will at least have to watch the last events.
As for the Fraser/Smith thing, I got to say, I'm really glad Ben won. Mat is a great athlete, but he had some huge holes. Ben seems to be a great guy and has been consistently good for years... Before the regionals and games I was really excited for the womens competition, thinking that this year finally all of the big names would be there all at ones, except Talayna maybe. Annie, Sam, Julie, Stacie, Camille, Michele, Kara,... See what I mean? Not one on the podium! I would have loved to see Sara Sigmundsdottir win, seems to be a really nice girl, very positive and did a great job for the most part. Seemed like in the end she lost it a bit... Kara Webb was my pick for first, I think she might have lost a lot on Friday after Murph, didn't look very healthy! I liked the events this year, the conditions seemed to be horrible though. Loved to watch Murph, didn't understand Midline March and the paddle board, the finals could have been turned around, the peg board as last movement maybe. Would have made it easier to watch I guess... I love the peg board by the way. Would love to see a side to side relay race for the teams sometime. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
So a healthy Ben Smith wins the games.. Mat F close but no cigar. I am glad that Ben won.. On Sunday checking in I confused the two Iceland ladies and told Katrin thinking that she was Sara that its your year…. you are gonna win.. she looked surprised.. she was a very nice lady beast.
Surprised that the hspu took out Mat F. He rowed and airodyned like crazy to almost catch up. Bet that no one could have gone faster than him during that phase. Turned himself inside out.. thus making those 203# kb seem like 1000 lbs.. was a great finish on both sides. Congrats on a bigger and way better year for the games. Sure its getting harder and they will have their share of pull outs.. Even harder next year. I really did not want Rich to win. Hoped that No Cal or another box would win. His men we're by far the best.. the ladies really stepped up their game. End of the day they all do the same events and get to use the same scoring system. We all have some bad calls and things that don't go our way. Shout out to all of the teen, masters, individuals and teams this year for making it. Great showing! |

Maybe this explains scoring errors through the weekend?
I re-scored the athletes based on the point spread used in 2014, just to see if it would make a difference in the outcome. With 2014 Games scoring system: - Ben Smith's winning spread over Matt Fraser increases to 61 points instead of 36 points. - Dan Bailey wins 3rd place. - Scott Panchik and Cole Sager move ahead of Spencer Hendel to 5th and 6th place. Spencer Hendel is bumped down from 5th to 7th place. - Scott Panchik beats Cole Sager by 1 point instead of 9 points. I also re-scored the athletes based on the 2014 Regional scoring system (lowest score wins, i.e., 1st = 1 point): - Ben Smith wins by 45 points, which is more significant at lower point totals. - Matt Fraser and Bjorg Guomundsson tie for 2nd place. During solo 2 during the team competition, Froning's bike wasn't functioning correctly (I'm assuming) so a head judge came over and watched his screen while looking at a stop watch. What was that all about? |

Well based on my math and science (and bias and reason) I'd say Rich would have won the Games over a 2nd place Ben Smith by 56.7 points with Fraser another 48 points behind that. All kidding aside, I do think Rich would have had a great chance to five-peat. His running/cardio has improved dramatically, he's still strong as an ox and can kill WODs with the best. But, having him on the team side is exciting as well. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Just "Chris" is good.
I used this year's event rankings with previous scoring systems. Rich wasn't doing the individual events, so he wasn't ranked on those events. I can't score him with the others this year. While we're speculating, I'm not sure that Rich would have won the individual event this year. In recent years the margin by which he won decreased: 2011 - 93 points ahead of 2nd place 2012 - 114 points ahead 2013 - 72 points ahead 2014 - 50 points ahead Last year Rich said the Games kept getting harder and the other athletes kept getting better. In 2014 he went into the last two events (Thick 'n Quick and Double Grace) just 10 points ahead of Matt Fraser. It's possible that the margin would have closed enough in 2015 that Rich wouldn't have won. Then again, the 2015 Games were such a slug fest that Rich's strong Sunday finishes might have pulled him through to win. |

Although the 808 women are beasts (won both female only events this year and were 2nd/3rd last year). All in all though - I'm just glad you didn't say it was all setup for Froning to win lol. Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Lets face it.. I would not bet against Froning in crossfit. I think that he would have charged ahead and closed out the day on Sunday just like he always did.. except the Rope 2010.
When I saw his team.. thought wow great guys… then looked at the girls and said no chance. Sure Nor Cal down one girl.. that helped the team cause.. sure breaking down the boys and girls and separating them as they did.. that helped.. but they guy can close the show. He sure did lead them to victory. Glad that Ben and Katrin won.. nice to see new people.. wow go Viking power. |
