You should use wrist straps if your grip isn't strong enough. Better to work the muscles hard than to let your grip be the weak link.

My background is in body building, though, so I have a very strong chest. Can't I just drop the barbell on my chest? It should bounce right off, right??

I saw Dmitry Klokov do it once so it's probably alright.
