I feel the EXACT same way, Eric. I was also pretty disappointed they made super regions making Regional access all the more exclusive. It was pretty cool to see a local guy there and even having a chance, albeit a slim one, of making it.

If anything, I feel they are going in the wrong direction by making regionals tougher. I'd love to see a whole 'nother level, after open, and before regionals, "qualifications"?
Make it more inclusive, not less. Not to sound too harsh, but the scaled division just says "you lost, you're out" from day one.
Again, I'm not elite and probably wouldn't make it to the my proposed new round, but it would be exciting to try...

Boulder is a pretty expensive place...
Or it could have been a 75% down payment...

Well she didn't actually walk away with that amount. By the time Uncle Sam and california get their share she had a whole lot less.

Yeah... housing prices in this area of Colorado are obscene. I'm sad every time I make a mortgage payment. It makes me pine for the days I used to live in the midwest. If I could just figure out how to work in Denver and live in Indiana...

The realtors and mortgage brokers that I know say there aren't enough houses to sell. Houses between 200k and 400k will have 10 offers the first weekend they're listed on the market, some offers above asking price. It's crazy.

Eric,
I think you're getting at something here. I noticed that the marketing to get people to sign up for the Open has changed. A couple of years ago it was "the most egalitarian competition on earth;" anyone could enter and anyone could win. How do you stack up against the best? Prove your fitness. World champion fitness was the definition of success.

This year it's "Fittest in ______." You fill in the blank. You decide what success is. This is meant to feel more inclusive, i.e., more people can succeed if your definition of success is "Fittest in [U]my gym[/U]," or "Fittest in [U]my town[/U]." (For me, success will have to be limited to "Fittest in [U]my home gym[/U]." :p)

As this competition has developed over the years, people recognize that the imagined dream of winning Games or even qualifying for Regionals just ain't gonna happen. Changing the nature of Regionals and also the marketing invite acknowledges that, intentionally or not.

This could be achieved by requiring the top 100 from each region to participate in an online qualifier on the same weekend as the Masters qualifier, with a similar format. Teams would also be required to participate in team WODS that weekend. I could see something like this in 2016.
