2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
https://games.crossfit.com/article/2017-has-arrived (wfs)
New Masters bracket for age 35-39. (I'm 38 this year.) New venue for the Games. Any predictions for open workouts? Let the chatter begin. 3, 2, 1, GO! |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Well if Castro said it is going to sting this year then we are in for a hard time.
I would like to see something more than just capacity for example the max C&J/Snatch and maybe a max front squat from the floor during 2 seperate weeks. It will give us heavy guys a little more chance against those duracel rabbits :D |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Im sure it will be more of the same with twists and turns. We are always looking for some special announcement. Like with Smith, Rich and Matt are at the ranch.. looking for epic battle then oh repeat workout where the short guy wins and the tall guy lost. Ho hum.. yawn… Throw in something crazy Castro I dare you.
Possible- Hand stand walks because Castro opened up the measuring marks in 16.1 and they have scaled division so people can do that one if they can't walk on hands. Pistols- its not that hard to judge them. Just like any other movement in the open some perfect form, some crap#y form and everything in between. Again they offer scaled. Rope climbs- Some maxes - Snatch, OHS from ground? Maybe 2 separate scored workouts so that people can't just focus on one. 1 burner and 1 longer chipper? Remember what ever he announces celebrate it and know that everyone has to do the workout. You are not special. My goals are the following: Be nice to my loved ones and the people around me during this high possible stress time. Push harder than I have in the past- place higher expectations on myself and live up to it. Not care at the leader board - that is going to be tough. 1 and done Do the workout every Friday 5pm. Just have fun and know that people are watching me. I want to give them a good show and motivate them with giving it my all and being a good sport about it. Beat my two training partners Kyle and Corey! Good luck! |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Games web page a bit jacked?
I looked around and didn't see much discussion on this. Is it just me? Seem like everywhere I navigate there is something odd or broken. For example, when I clicked on the link to my team, the link took me to a different team in a completely different state! So then I tried to find the team listed under the score board. Many states, including my own, show no teams at all. Now I suppose it's possible that none of the 175+ affiliates in my state have registered a team yet...but I doubt it. But then I choose the list by Region it shows up there. Then when I click on the profile for my affiliate, it shows no athletes on the roster, which I know isn't right since I'm on it. So then there is a link at the bottom that says, "Team" and clicking on it opens a new browser window to Team Registration team, which says, "Please correct issues and submit again. Athlete is already on a team" odd. not sure what it's even referring to. Ok, now go back the Leaderboard and show all athletes, type in my own name and it doesn't do anything. Ah! so a person can't be a "Individual Men" if you are over the age of 35 apparently. Picking the appropriate age group and there I am. Clicking of my profile takes me to a page that say, "Register for the 2017 Open", but I'm already registered so apparently the site can't tell the difference between a participant that is logged in and someone that isn't and why is the "Register" choice in the middle of the profile information? Weird. odd. I'm hopeful they will get this all straightened out in the next few weeks. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Very true David,
allot of simple things that should have been tried and tested in the beta version before they released it. To name one very simple thing - countries not in alphabetical order Wether this is a user error or not - women in the 45-49 mens category I mean if you have good coders you would never have this issue. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
The #1 they better get right is people able to post their scores. If that fails it will be chaos.
I think the problem is the CF HQ still acts like it just a bunch of guys making it up as they go along. Probably someone's brother's cousin's drinking buddy did the web page...and I'm not kidding. "Hey, anyone know anyone that does web pages? Oh ya, how much do they charge? What? a $1000?? I know a kid that will do it for free! But he did screw it up a few seasons ago...remember when the scores couldn't be submitted in the first workout was stretched out for three weeks? ya, that was jacked. Ok, so we'll pay someone this time. Anyone know anyone cheap? Oh ya? Is he any good? You have no idea but you'll ask... Ok, sounds good, we'll go with that." And here we are. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
I tweeted them regarding my past open scores and they told me that the website is a work in progress and will be for a little while. Seems they rushed it for the open registration and will continue to tweak it and improve it.
As for the Open, I know they're doing "Themes" this year for the announcements. If you look on the games web store you'll see they have shirts for garage, student, teacher, doctor, nurse, law enforcement and fire. Wonder if the themes will be chosen from there. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Less than 1 month away. Hope everyone is feeling good!
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Compared to last year i am ready and the body is feeling good.
I don't care about anyone else and what they are doing, I have my goal and I intend on reaching it this year. Weakness for 2017 HSPU, I have not cracked that one yet but I have 4 weeks. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Alex.. get that hspu. Best tip I ever got is tuck that chin to the chest when you kick up to the wall and keep it tucked when dismounting after your first one.
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Thanks for the tip Vic..
Tomorrow I am going to have my first ever session with a coach only for HSPU, going to see if this guy is any good. Will let you now how it goes :) |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Vic you can read about it in my training log.

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Is Castro giving us ideas on what is to come via instagram??
Snatch C&J The Turkish Get up |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Is Castro giving us ideas on what is to come via instagram??
Snatch C&J The Turkish Get up
The Turkish get up would be cool, but man! I can't imagine the judging standards on something like that. If it were simply "shoulder blades and hips on the floor to begin the rep," and "full lockout overhead at the end of the rep," then what kind of mess would we see in between? |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Could be a time period for max load both arms using a standard barbell and plates.
Something different that not a lot of people practice a bunch but transfers well to fitness. It would be much better to make this a Part A of an A/b event. It also gets rid of the specialist Oly and Powerlifters as it is not something they would normally practice or specialize in. Really, who is a barbell TGU specialist ? I like it, but doubt we will see it. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
I'm convinced we're going to see handstand walks this year. Similar to how they did the overhead lunges last year. They kind of setup the model in terms of how to structure it with that less technical movement. HS walks have been a huge part of Regionals and the Games the last few years, I could see them being in the Open now. Not sure what the scaled option for that would be though.

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Plus Castro warned people to get some 35# and 50# pairs of dumb bells.
Plus Castro warned people to get some 35# and 50# pairs of dumb bells.
Gym owners are going to be livid if they go out and buy a bunch and they don't end up coming up. I feel like most gyms have 45s but not a lot of 50s I know our coaches are buying some. I feel like they need to make a blatant statement and not a vague IG post for stuff like this. Assault Bike is sponsoring the Open/Games this year too, wonder if that will come up. People would be scrambling and paying a lot of money... |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
I don't think that the dumb bells are a big ask. Saying this we have 45 pairs of them in our gym. So I guess that every gym is different. I bet it will bother a few and cause a few to not turn in scores. Overall crossfit has to keep on getting better to stay the same so this involves up grading events and exercises causing more equipment to be purchased.
AA Bikes don't think they will do these. These bikes have not made much of a difference in the Regionals or games. Just a steady push for the events so far. If they did do an all out 50 cal for time in a workout at either level then the bikes would be for real. Its weird because they can cause such pain and havoc on you but they lay just as accessory work in the events. So until they drop the hammer I don't think that AA bikes will be coming to a open any time soon. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Assault Bike was a sponsor last year as well. Highly unlikely you will see them this year in the Open.
I have adjustable DBs at home, first piece of gear I ever had. I am not likely to actually do the Open this year but nice to know I could. Although last year the 25' of OH walking lunge would have been a no go at home. |

But i would like to have one, just trying to win over the wife with that one :D |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Today CFHQ facebook page - publish the dumbbell overhead walking lunge.
a hint maybe? |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Alex was just going to post that. OH Walking lunge with 50# dumbbells. I gotta get tested on that one.
We do thrusters with the 50's a lot.. They could do ground to overhead with them also. Who knows?? But this time Im sure that Castro will implement them with that post. That was the biggest clue yet. Making people scramble for them if they don't have access to them and not programming might lose some fans and peeps doing that. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Going to be a tough one with 50s as you said, the trouble is we need to test it "just in case"
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
They officially announced the dumbbells:
https://games.crossfit.com/announcement/9908 • When the dumbbell is at rest, the bottom of the handle cannot be more than 4 in. off the ground. Assuming we're snatching if that's a caveat of the dumbbell dimensions. |

Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Wonder what they will do with them.
Snatch Clean and Jerk OH lunges OHS squat Farmer Carry cleans hang cleans hang snatch Anything else.. Maybe they will have a workout with more than one exercise with the DB's? Once again won't begin to guess whats inside Castro's head. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Thrusters !!!
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
"Kilogram dumbbells cannot be used by athletes competing in the U.S. or Canada."
WTF?!! |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Yes forgot those thrusters, s2o, burpee db dead lifts, TGU, Farmers carry, distance toss, dumbbell triceps kick backs.. the list is long.
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Burpee db box step overs.. Im sure it going to be c & j , thrusters or walking oh lunges with the db's.
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
distance toss
A dumbbell distance toss is so fun, but I can't see it happening in Open competition. :yikes: |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Re do?
Pistols? Handstand Walks? 3 unders? Max? Chipper? All of the above? |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
hand stand dumbbell alternating shoulder taps.. that would be a twist..
lol..jk.. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
I'd love to see the 17 min burpee/snatch combo come back. one of my favorite over the last four years.
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
One thing i am looking forward to during the open is Ro vs. Boz it is more intersting to watch them than the elite.
|
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Hopefully Ro has been working on his weaknesses. Boz spanked him last year!
|

They were close on the workouts apart from 16.5 but i am hoping for Ro this year. |
Re: 2017 CrossFit Open, Regionals and Games Thread
Looking at week 1 i am wondering if this is going to be a real burner...
Briggs and anything where Briggs is involved with that engine..... :yikes: |
