This happened when she was running and fell?
Did her knee hyperextend? Could that fold the kneecap in half? That is a strange injury.
I'm not really sure how it happened... I just saw her slip and fall and then not get up. My wife thinks she had to have landed on her knee cap for it to actually break like that. (she in the medical field) |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Yes, appears so. I can modify mine pretty quickly to go back to the old way, and quick checking the top 10 or so, I match that. It highlights the priority Games-style puts on finishing near the top. Say you have two guys, A wins an event, B comes in 10th. They have either:
100 vs. 67 (higher better) 1 vs. 10 (lower better) Under the old way, for B to reclaim that lead, all he has to do is come in 9 places better than A....ANY 9 places: 12 vs 21, 2 vs 11, 24 vs 33, etc... Under Games-scoring, making up that 32 points depends on not just the disparity between A and B's finish, but what those finishes are. That is, as B's finish drops, the gap between him and A needs to widen. An exact swap (B 1, A 10) would work, but if B finishes 12th, e.g., A would need to finish 28th, a 16-place gap, for them to be tied. If A finished 21st - so now each has techincally finished 9 spots ahead of the other in a workout - A is still ahead by 15 points.
They said the Games scoring system favors stand-out performances. Interesting to see the numbers played out. For giggles, I reranked the top 10 men in the Central Regional using last year's Regional scoring system. 40 Panchik 69 Heppner 72 Anderson 86 Urankar 86 Holmberg 97 Fory 98 Keathley 99 Moorad 103 McBride 108 Scholtz Not much change in overall ranking. Moorad and Keathley swap spots. Scholtz and Dancer switch spots at 10th / 11th place. Urankar and Holmberg tied on points with either scoring system. The tiebreaker shows they both had a 1st place finish in one event - tied again. The next tiebreaker sees Urankar with a 2nd place finish and Holmberg with a 4th place finish. Tiebreaker goes to Urankar. When I reviewed the leader board, I found pretty interesting athlete scores from Arlen Castenada. He ranked 40th, 40th, 40th, 40th, 1st, 38th, and 38th. The event he won was the snatch. He's strong and great at Olympic lifting - not so good at metcons and other CrossFit events. The muscle ups kept him from finishing event 7 faster (failed reps, resting breaks). It looked like his wrist was bothering him on the cleans. Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
So here's a thought about the teams regarding the injury aspect. What if teams were allowed to have one alternate male and female athlete available incase someone gets injured? You wouldn't swap them in during that actual event, but they could be used for the remaining events.
I know this would potentially create the issue of teams saying someone is 'injured' just to bring in a fresh pair of legs, but you could also just get around that by allowing one male and female swap over the course of a weekend. You could use the swap due to injury or just general strategy. Thoughts? I know the injury thing seems to be pretty infrequent, but it's worth considering. |

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Or if someone is injured and replaced they cannot return to the competition. Would still allow to substitute for fresh legs but the person they replaced would no longer be eligible. I think Snir's idea would be better though.

They could tag out an any point during an event, making everything faster paced. Maybe have a different color for each lane, like a red team and a blue team. We could call it the Fitness League ... or the GRID... :p Sorry, that's a silly response, but I thought of the NPGL when I read your comment, and had to go there. I don't know what it is about the way the events are planned, but I find the Regionals and Games a lot more fun to watch than an NPGL event. I think in past years, alternate athletes were part of teams in case of injury. |

He came into this weekend's competition nursing an injury, and then subsequently got hurt on rope climbs in Tommy V. |

That makes sense. I think I'd heard the name before, as he has been to Regionals several times. |

Yes, this was at least the second time he's been to regionals and he's competed in the elites category at Granite Games. Word on the street is that he is considering transitioning to team competition because the volume of competing individual is so hard to maintain. |
Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread
Using the data that Christopher posted earlier I made a quick data visualization if anyone is interested.
On the right side you will see some filters, you can select which division you want to look at, if you want to exclude any regions, and if you want to only look at the performances for those who qualified for the games. The bar graph up top shows the median overall place by region. I used median because one really good or really bad performance can skew the average too much, this gives you a better idea of where the athletes in the different divisions placed. The color of the bar represents the number of athletes in that division. You can hover over each bar to see the number of athletes and the median finish. A smaller bar here would mean the athletes from that region tended to finish closer to the top, a dark color would mean that more athletes came out of that region. The line graph in the bottom left shows the trending of median finish by region across the events. The closer to the top the better the finish. At the bottom you will see the color legend, if you click on one of the regions it will highlight that line so you can more easily see how that region performed. If you go back to the bar graph and click on one of the regions you will see the line graph in the bottom right populate, it is like the other line graph but it will show you the trending of performance by the athlete in the region you selected. Again, being at the top means you finished in a better place. Again, you can click on the athlete in the legend to just show their line. Hope you guys like this (and that I interpreted the data properly), if you have any suggestions for other ways you would like to see it displayed let me know and depending on what it is I might be able to do that for you.
