Broke her patella.
Did she run into the GHD? I can't imagine how you could break a patella with muscular movement. It would have to be some kind of impact injury. I watched the video, and you don't see her until she's laying on the ground in pain. The moment of injury isn't shown.

From Seth Rollins' Instagram: "This is my #TeamRollins stud @maddyrug. She suffered a horrific injury yesterday while competing at the @crossfitgames Central Regional. While running to the GHD sit-up station she slipped on the arena floor, buckled her knee and split her patella in half. Today she had successful surgery to repair the kneecap and she's well on the road to recovery. Wish her the best!"

For Tighe and the other data geeks.

Every year somebody puts together a spreadsheet cross-comparing the Regionals.
This doesn't seem to coincide with Tighe's findings. I wonder if it's because he appears to be scoring by the old scoring system last year and not the new updated Games style scoring.

Re: 2015 CrossFit Open, Regionals, and Games Thread

I'm going to take Pat Sherwood to task a little here. In the Update Show he did "Pat's Picks" for the top five individual athletes he thought would qualify from each Regional. Let's see how well he did. (Rory McKernan made the picks for the Atlantic Regionals.)

Out of sixty selections, he chose right on 39 qualifying athletes. He was correct on their placement (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) on 10 athletes.

He got all five women right in the South Regionals, just a different order. I think he would have gotten the Central women right as well, but Foucher was injured, and Barden lost her spot on the last clean of the last event, failing several times.

This. It was definitely horrific to see it happen real time. I saw her slip and fall and when she didn't get up right away you knew it had to be bad.

This happened when she was running and fell?

Did her knee hyperextend? Could that fold the kneecap in half? That is a strange injury.

This image shows the before and after x-rays. The first shows two pieces of the patella separating around the condyle of the femur. The second shows wires and pins connecting the two pieces in the proper position.

If her team said it had been bothering her ahead of time (and it looks like she had rock tape on it during the event), there may have been a stress fracture already started that weakened the bone before the injury.

Yes, appears so. I can modify mine pretty quickly to go back to the old way, and quick checking the top 10 or so, I match that. It highlights the priority Games-style puts on finishing near the top. Say you have two guys, A wins an event, B comes in 10th. They have either:

100 vs. 67 (higher better)
1 vs. 10 (lower better)

Under the old way, for B to reclaim that lead, all he has to do is come in 9 places better than A....ANY 9 places: 12 vs 21, 2 vs 11, 24 vs 33, etc... Under Games-scoring, making up that 32 points depends on not just the disparity between A and B's finish, but what those finishes are. That is, as B's finish drops, the gap between him and A needs to widen. An exact swap (B 1, A 10) would work, but if B finishes 12th, e.g., A would need to finish 28th, a 16-place gap, for them to be tied. If A finished 21st - so now each has techincally finished 9 spots ahead of the other in a workout - A is still ahead by 15 points.
