Excellent point. The Judges Course, in fact, is quite clear that a judge is not there to comment on an athlete's form/mechanics. They are only there to ensure that they meet the points of performance required to meet the standard, no more, no less.

Re: your other post, about Froning's squats. I can't say I've noticed, per se, but it reminds me of something, that I've thought that judging people with shorter legs and big quads can be difficult, particularly if they have a neutral-to-narrow stance. A guy at my box fits that build and I avoid judging him if possible; it can very hard to see exactly where their hip crease is sometimes.
I chalked a guy and a girl leg once because their quads were huge and it was hard to tell if they met the standards. Neither of them cared because some people said they were not doing the movement and it was turning into a whinefest. Everyone shut up when they saw the chalk line show they were hitting depth.

Did we have to do it, no but they didn't want to get called because someone couldn't tell and no repped them. They knew they were doing it right and didn't care.

This might be the best idea in the history of ideas.

I often recommend that athletes wear pants/shorts with an obvious stripe or design down the side as it also helps. Any time a guy with big quads rocks tights with a stripe in competition I say a little prayer of thanks.

We have multiple athletes on our team that are absolute quadzillas. Two of them are so big that sometimes it's hard to tell that they are fully extended at the top. I learned the last year or so that sometimes looked at the Glutes is the best way to determine the hip extension.

I think you're onto something. I mean, the only reason someone would get upset is if they knew it was going to highlight their lack of proper range of motion. OK....I'm starting my own line of "EZ Judge" apparel, LOL.

I'm excited for the Central Regionals this weekend!

I'm kinda bummed that the Regionals came and went so quickly this year. Only three weekends to get my fix. It does give every Games qualifier a couple of months to reset before the Games, though.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I came very close to bouncing an athlete from a competition last year because she cussed me out for no repping her. Ultimately I told her that the WOD had a time cap and that it was her choice whether she wanted to use the time to argue with me or do the work.

Since I'm judging the Central regional, the running joke at my gym is that my life goal is to no rep Froning. God knows he shortcuts his squats enough to earn some. In reality, I'm hoping I won't even be judging The heats Froning is in. The team from my gym is going in as the top seed and if they perform like they should, I am expecting them to be in the same heat as Mayhem Freedom for the weekend. We have a few extra judges so I want to duck out to watch my friends compete if I can.
Froning and Khalipa gave me 2 no reps at the same time during my level 1 cert during Fran on my last set of thrusters.

I then put the bar down with 3 thrusters to go. Froning then began yelling at me to pick it up. Froning yelling at me stands as the greatest athletic achievement to date for me.

hahahahahahaa that is an awesome story!!

Concerning the team events in the Central......man, watching event 2 was rough, you can count on the men to give the girls a lead....and then squander it. I feel like they'll qualify for the Games and finish somewhere around 8th. I hate to say it, because I'm such a big Froning (and Hobart) guy. Next year (2016) will be their year.

Yes they talk about the big teams.. Hack's pack and Nor Cal are way higher than the other. Yes Rich and his boys are tops but the girls are not so much. Will take 6 to win the event. Yes Rich will go to the games with the team but I believe that Nor Cal will take it. Wild Card is Invictus if they get Fisher and Rasmish on the team..

I think team event 2 was very poorly designed unless I'm missing something. Basically, once the men get through the snatches, the rest of the event is practically meaningless for them unless their women somehow caught up.

After the women get started, it doesn't matter if the men are the first team done or the last from my understanding, all that matters is where the women finish. I think this event should have either been:

A: split so that half the points are based on the men, and half on the women
B: structured so that the women don't start until the men are completely finished. (probably not plausible from an event time perspective)
C: set up to allow either the men or women to go first. Adds a strategy element that I think should play a role. If you happen to have much stronger men than women (Crossfit Mayhem), you'd start the women first so your men's team has a chance to make up ground over the whole event- not just matter during the snatches and be virtually irrelevant after.

I agree totally. As cool as it was to see Froning come flying in first....it didn't matter at all. The final 115 snatches could have been walked through and it wouldn't have mattered. That was weird.

I think that they accomplished EXACTLY what they wanted with the design of this event. They wanted to force weakness in the women to be exploited and this event as designed works perfectly for that.

My day was pretty good. I'm enjoying judging a lot. Unfortunately one of the girls from my gyms teamgit very overheated during the first event with disastrous results - they came in dead last. They followed it up with a 4th place finish in event 2, though. Tomorrow is another day!
